Looks like the deal will happen - just a cool 198 million!

The pressure on him to perform and bring success is going to be immense.

Barca will certainly be looking to spend the money they get - might be able to buy a few half decent players themselves (as if they need many..)

Wow. It looked like this might happen a couple of weeks ago but then went quiet, so I assumed it was all paper talk. But that suddenly looks a bit more concrete.

Premier League clubs: Look at all the money we can splurge! Biggest summer spend ever!
PSG: Hold my beer.

Not sure why he wants to leave.

One of the suggestions is that he wants to be the main man - and have a chance of winning the World Footballers of the Year award which is viewed as highly important in South American.

Guess Neymar didn't want to wait for Messi and co to retire..

500k a week might be a swinger!
But I think it's more for personal accolades really. If Barca do the treble, he'll find himself 2nd or 3rd in the ballon d'or. If PSG do it with him there, he'll win it.
He has a better chance at the ballon d'or at PSG even if he has less chance of winning the CL.

World Footballer of the Year award while playing for a notorious CL Quarterfinal exit club?

Guess Neymar didn't want to wait for Messi and co to retire..

Or he wants to play in the french league ..ah wait...must be another reason

In € it's even "cooler" 222m....insane. Hope they'll go out in the CL groupstages

The fallout from this is going to be nasty and it's going to come sooner than people think.

It certainly feels like a watershed moment.

If it were Man Utd I could see how it could possibly be made to make sense, through seriously rinsing the marketing value he'd add.
But PSG? Gonna have to sell a fair few players aren't they?

Saying this, Walker, Danilo, Mendy and B.Silva or Neymar?

I honestly think he's making a mistake. You can't just leave Barca for PSG just for money. It's plain fucking stupid. He'll regret this move in a couple of years.

SSN reporting right now: Neymar agrees 5 year deal at PSG at "£515,000 per week after tax"

A new benchmark for the world's best players. How long until others on his rung start asking their agents for similar?

They won't get it. Clubs simply won't be able to afford it. And it's not like they can jump ship to other clubs willing to pay that kind of money either.

If that's true then that's incredible. It's a 45% higher tax rate over there which means they have to spend £936k per week or over £48m per year. Five year deal totals £243m in wages. So total outlay of over £400m on one player for five years.

It's mind blowing.

One of our politicians is already rubbing his hands at the extra tax money the government is going to get from Neymar's wages.

While the fees are staggering, when did Barca/R Madrid become this so called 'glorious only option' for all players and clubs that can buy and demand who they want but it dare not go other way around

Of all the clubs in the world to react this way to a release clause (which they themselves set) being activated, it just had to be Barcelona.

What has it got to do with La Liga - are they worried about losing one of their star names?

They did something similar with Zlatan so obviously aren't fussed about it.

Football has eaten itself, hasn't it.

When it's essentially just become a vehicle for dodgy states to increase their global clout you know something's gone badly wrong.
Yep City's owners are the same, they are basically trying to promote their country which is why they own so many clubs in so many regions throughout the world.

A bit rich coming from a Chelsea fan however whose used to dodgy owners doing dodgy things and with the latest one hailing from a very dodgy state. :D

It's also hilariously hypocritical when Real and Barca are the most frequent users of inserting cheap re-purchase clauses in players they send out who are deemed surplus to requirements but they might fancy back later if they turn out to be good, essentially getting paid by other clubs to develop their players and then get them back on the cheap.

Apparently Barca have accepted and received the payment of €222m now.

Barca specifically have a holier than thou attitude that stinks. It's quite funny to see them having a moan now that they realise that they're selling us one of their best players.

La Liga also being hypocrites claiming it is an "illegal transfer" considering all the tax problems surrounding previous transfers they happily sanctioned INTO La Liga to boost its star power.

How is this a unprecedented trend and not, say, literally the entire history of global capitalist expansion. Or is it only acceptable when imperialist nations do it.

Well, yeah, in that context, it's not unprecedented, obvz (not that I suggested otherwise).

Wealthy nations with appalling human rights records owning football clubs is a fairly recent development though, and a pretty lamentable one imo.
