Honesty I didn’t think Boris would be able to come back with the deal that he did, nor did many, remember the we will not renegotiate’ stance from the EU? So I’m going to hold back, he’s in such a strong position now too domestically.

Really? Anyone with half a brain could have got the change to May's deal - he just sacrificed N. Ireland as the backstop, essentially annexing it from GB.

The EU were always going to negotiate, they said every time they wouldn't negotiate, but did in the last minute. Did you actually believe they wouldn't for Boris all of a sudden?

I did think they would back down, that post came out nothing like I intended I cannot multi task!

What I mean is I was surprised Boris was able to bring something back that his own party (the ERG in particular) were able to get behind, but I was equally surprised they backed it considering Northern Ireland.

Haha! No worries.

I wasn't too surprised, considering he fired those before who voted against him...

But that still brings back the whole situation of 'you best do a deal with me, otherwise i'll cut off my own arm and one of your fingers'.

The EU will not make any exceptions to the UK, the preservation of the single market will be their priority. Anything that tries to upset that will ultimately lead to a no deal situation.

But it's what Boris and others believe. He said when parliament tied his hands that they had stopped the EU from backing down because they forced him to request an extension. He is just making sure that cannot happen again so either the EU gives something or we crash out with no deal. There will be no more extensions that the EU are happy to keep on granting.

They can believe it all they want, but we're still doing more harm to ourselves in a no deal scenario, than to the EU. People seem to talk like us crashing out will mean we're ok, but the EU will suffer - when in reality, you couldn't be much further from the truth.

Depends what country, let’s not forget the EU isn’t the United States of Europe - yet anyway! Ireland would be one of the worst hit. *according to the experts who are hit and miss*

I think the shift in rhetoric from Macron and the like since the general election shows you the mindset the EU has right now. They do not want a large economy on their doorstep undercutting them. The threat of No Deal is bound to hasten the entire negotiation process. It has always been one of our strongest cards. It's a shame we didn't until recently have a parliament with the inclination to properly play it.

I don't think anyone talks like that, I also don't think Boris wants No deal and said as much last parliament, but what he didn't want and doesn't now is his hands tied because the EU knows we would just keep requesting extensions so had no reason to give concessions.

Now they either have to be more open to negotiation or risk no deal. They don't want no deal just as much as us. Of course we will be much worse off with no deal than they will, but how seriously do they take Boris on his word that he will just leave with no deal at the end of the year?

How on earth would we undercut the single market & EU in the even of a no deal Brexit?

I appreciate the threat of no deal, just the constant rhetoric from idiots who somehow think that no deal will have them scrambling because they’re desperate for us, but we will be fine. The arrogance of ‘we’re the UK’ can be a bit embarrassing tbh.

Sadly Freelaf, I see/hear many people talk like that - on social media and I hear them call & text into 5Live.

Lower taxes, lower tariffs, deregulation etc.
Hmm, not sure how that would work. Might mean things come in cheap but people can’t sell because of high tariffs.

The governments own research and documents say things will get more expensive, rather than cheaper.

And how on earth would we have lower tax? When was the last time a Tory government lowered tax on workers?!

We already have lower taxes than the bigger EU countries don't we?
Income tax or corporation/business tax?

I don't see how/why a no deal Brexit would even allow, never mind actually action the Tories to lower our income tax.

I don't suppose the EU cares so much about our income tax, that won't really affect them, but lower corporate tax rates and more so deregulation could definitely lure investment our way. You can tell from the rhetoric they're concerned. Listen out for "unfair competition" and "level playing field rules" from from the EU and continental politicians, you're going to hear that A LOT in the next year. They absolutely do not want to have to compete with the UK. It's why the threat of No Deal is a great way of getting things moving. Even if no one involved truly wants it, the EU believing it could happen definitely works in our favour.

Let’s see, that sounds very pie in the sky right now when the governments own planning report basically said the U.K. is f*cked.
