Green Street (2005)

Green Street is a drama movie from 2005 about football hooliganism in the United Kingdom. The action starts with Matt Buckner (Elijah Wood) being expelled from Harvard due to a setup from his roommate. After this, he goes to his sister, Shannon, in London. There he becomes friends with Pete (Charlie Hunnam), teacher and football coach of the local football hooligan firm named Green Street Elite.


Even though at first Matt wasn’t sure if he had a place in GSE (Green Street Elite), eventually he ends up in the team. During his stay in London, a series of events happen, which make him return from where he left off. He finds a way to go back to Harvard and the action ends how it began.

The Damned United (2009)

A British sports drama film, The Damned United was inspired by David Peace‘s book, The Damned Utd. The story is about Brian Clough who coaches the English football club Leeds United. As a former manager at Derby County, he takes this spot when Don Revie leaves for another team.


The methods Clough chooses to use on the players become very controversial. He tells the team right from the beginning to throw away their old trophies because they didn’t earn them fairly. Even though its contract lasted just 44 days, a lot of things happened in this period, Clough creating a very questionable image for himself in the football industry.

United (2011)

United aired in 2011 and is a British film that tells the story of the Manchester United’ “Busby Babes”. The story begins with Matt Busby, the team manager, that gives Charlton the chance to play for the first time in a game with Manchester United’s first team, nicknamed Busby Babes. The team got stuck with this nickname because most of the players were very young.


After a thriving period, the team confronts with a tragic disaster that will change them forever. A plane crash occurs when they are returning from a European Cup match, several players losing their life.


The team's future changes, but not necessary in the wrong direction. Till the end of the movie, things are starting to get back on track, Charlton coming back to United.

Escape to Victory (1981)

Escape to Victory, also known just as Victory, is a film directed by John Huston. The movie is about prisoners from the German prison camp who play an exhibition match of football against a German team.


Some of the players try to use the game as a way to escape the prison camp. English Captain John Colby, the coach and leader of the team does not agree with this, fearing that it will get his players killed.


Eventually, Robert Hatch, the one who comes up with this idea manages to escape. He finds a way to help the rest of the team to get out of there and tries its best to make a success of his plan.


Even though things are not that easy, in the end, after lots of struggles, everything works out and they manage to escape.

You seem to be open to interpretation as to what kind of football counts, but if we're allowing American Football then I would recommend The Blind Side.
