Ashton Gate - Bristol City Ground Guide

Hi all.

Ashton Gate is currently a stadium undergoing mass development, but as it is for away fans, things will stay the same for the long, foreseeable future.

Ashton Gate is easily accessible by car, as it is surrounded by many side roads. You shouldn't have trouble getting a parking space within a 10 minute of the stadium, if you get there in decent time. When travelling by car, we usually park down a road named 'Synth Road', which is a long street, with many side streets going off it. As long as you are there before 2pm, you shouldn't have trouble finding a space. As long as no driveways are blocked, and there are no obvious giveaways in your car that you're an away fan, your car should remain as you left it, as you'd expect.

The closest Train Station to Ashton Gate is Bristol Temple Meads. Temple Meads is a 45 minute walk at a decent pace away from Ashton Gate, but there are many pubs on route, particularly if you head through St Mary's Redcliffe, and then down alongside the River Avon, which will eventually take you down to Ashton Gate. There is a bus service from Temple Meads to Ashton Gate, which picks up from Temple Meads at 2pm. It costs £2 to get up and back, which IMO is very reasonable. If you take this service, the bus will pick you up behind the Atyeo Stand (which is the fans in which the away fans are situated) on Duckmoor Road, and take you directly to Temple Meads, via the Harbourfront.

The view in the Atyeo is very good. This season, you will only get an allocation of 1,300, but after the re-development process, you'll be given the full stand, which is in the range of 4,500. Our fans always claimed that you couldn't make an atmosphere in the Atyeo, but many away fans who travelled to AG last season put that argument to bed. The AG unreserved section is in the Atyeo stand this season, so you can expect a good atmosphere, and banter with the home fans if you wish to partake in.

The food at AG is average really. Personally, I'd be tempted to get food outside of the ground, for a more reasonable price and better quality. There are a few pie vans on Duckmoor Road, and there is a KFC directly behind the new South Stand, but do note that after 1:30pm you'll struggle to find a seat inside there, so you're better off eating it outside.

As for away pubs, I believe that The Robins, which is a short walk down from KFC, is a home and away fans pub. It's about a 5 minute walk from the ground. If you're looking for a food pub, my recommendation would be the 'River City' pub. It's about a 15 minute walk away from the ground, but the grub they serve up in there is top notch, and I'd definitely recommend it.

Out of 10, I'd give Ashton Gate an 8. It's really starting to become a very nice ground, the away fans have a good view, there is some good pubs and places to get food around the stadium, and it's easily accessible.

Thanks for reading, and feel free to PM any questions if ever required!

The nearest train station isn't Temple Meads. It's Parsons Street and it's about a 10-15 minute walk away from the ground. It's on the opposite side of the ground to the Ateyo where away fans are located, so it'll now be a bit more of a walk, but still doable for any fans visiting on a Saturday. A taxi(if with friends) or the bus is possibly a cheaper, quicker option, but going the whole way by train is possible and it's what I prefer.

Although if you have time, I would highly recommend walking back to the city centre from the ground. I've crossed over the footbridge on Coronation Road, dropped down onto the footpath and walked back along the river. Then you can follow the old train line and cut through and walk along some of the old docks. Lovely walk, something different about it. Not many walks back from stadiums involved a river, an old train line, docks and the like.

I love Ashton Gate. Bit sad that it's lost some of its character with the main stand and old shed end being knocked down and replaced by shiny new ones, but it's still a good stadium. Hopefully get the chance to visit once the main stand is finished.

How Easy Was The Ground to Get To (from the station, by car, etc)
Usually go by car, never gone by any other route. If you are coming from the south, then I would say you should get off at J19 of the M5, go on the A369, and by the end of the A369 it should be signposted. I'm not sure about routes from the north, presumably you'd have to go through the city centre, which isn't great.
If Applicable, How is Parking Near The Ground?
Parking is usually fine, there are quite a lot of side streets nearby that you can park on for no extra cost.
EDIT (thanks to Smudge reminding me about the cricket club):
With the cricket club, i believe it cost £3 to park there, but in bad weather spaces are usually limited, so you have to be VERY early. They usually shut around 50% to 90% of the car park. And if you turn in there and find that no spaces are available, then you have to go a very long way back to turn around and try and find another parking space. But, it is good in sunny weather, as there is a pub on site, and it isn't far from the ground (just follow the crowd and you will most likely find yourself at AG) . Parking by the Wickes (£5 is the cost for parking in there.) can also be limited (due to the fact the car park is shared by Wickes customers.), but if it is then you can easily turn around. There is another cheap car park across the road, but it usually takes about half an hour to get out of it. I would recommend trying to park in the Wickes, if not use side streets.

Based on Where You Were Sat, How Was the View?
The away fans should get a good view, they are in the left of the Ateyo Stand (North Stand) .
How Were The Stewards on The Day?
Never had a problem with the stewards. Only once seen a slightly weird one but that was in 2012/13.

If You Ate at The Ground, How Would You Rate the Food?
It's the standard food, nothing special, nothing bad.

How Was The Atmosphere At The Ground, From Both Sets of Supporters? Does the Stadium Hold the Noise?
Usually a good atmosphere. Apart from when we are losing, the atmosphere is never really dire.
How Are the Pubs and Local Attractions in The Local Area?
See JJH's comment. There is a KFC right next to the ground (by the south stand entrance) , however it is usually packed, and it will take ages for you to get your food on a match-day.The Robins is a good pub for home and away fans, and that is usually packed too.
Overall Score Out of 10?
7/10

Only ever drove. Not a bad one, but traffic was pretty bad.

If Applicable, How is Parking Near The Ground?
I parked at the cricket club near the ground. Still didnt have a problem getting a space even though the traffic had made me very late.

Based on Where You Were Sat, How Was the View?
I was sat in the Atyeo, which has good views all around. It was the home end when I went, as it was before they knocked down the East End.

How Were The Stewards on The Day?
Never noticed

If You Ate at The Ground, How Would You Rate the Food?
The pies are very nice!

How Was The Atmosphere At The Ground, From Both Sets of Supporters? Does the Stadium Hold the Noise?
Pretty poor from both sides. Though it was an awful game to be fair.

How Are the Pubs and Local Attractions in The Local Area?
Didnt get a chance to look around as I was late. The cricket club where I parked did let away fans in.

Overall Score Out of 10?
It has changed a lot even since Ive been, so I probably cant even score it fairly! Good ground though.
7/10

Seeing as the ground has essentially been rebuilt (3/4 of it anyway) since the last review, could anyone review our place now? It would be a bit biased if we did it.
