I'd be happy to see premiership players being left out of the england games, they genuinely don't look interested and are failing anyway. Seems like other nations can pick players from down the league (because they have to) and do better than we do.

I actually made the point after we went out that we could have mustered a group of English players from Championship and League 1 clubs that could have put up more of a fight, and probably even won, against Iceland

Hardly like Iceland are a nation full of world beaters. In fact most are probably playing at a League 1 standard for their respective clubs

Yeah, but why would Championship and League One players have put up more of a fight?

Will be disappointed if we don't get a Big Sam, Steve Bruce super duper partnership.

Because playing for England might actually mean something to them instead of it being a chore as it appears to be to some of our 'superstars'

The two goalscorers for Iceland against England play for Nantes in Ligue 1 and Krasnodar (Russian top flight). Hardly League One standard.

Does it really appear that way though? I see no way to substantiate that claim without resorting to circular reasoning.

Of course it's a chore. As soon as they arrive home the players (and their families) and the staff are vilified.

Of course 1 or 2 will play for half decent sides but the majority seem to play in fairly average leagues across Scandinavia, or the lesser European leagues such as Belgium, Switzerland and Russia and I'd certainly rate our Championship higher than those sort of leagues

Weird how the players cared during the qualifiers, winning every single game, and then decided not to give a shit at the tournament itself.

Think I'd rather get Roy back than have Bruce!

At least Big Sam has a decent top flight record..

Yah, out an outsider i'd be more worried about having Big Sam in charge, he knows how to scrap and get the best out of players, not sure if the same can be said for Brucey.

According to Paddy Power as of a few minutes ago...

Big Sam - 1/4
Steve Bruce - 6/1
Jurgen Klinsmann - 10/1

Do not understand the Bruce link at all. If we're scraping the barrel that much, surely you have to consider Pulis, who has at least been regularly in the top flight in recent seasons.

Klinsmann is the only one that I find slightly interesting - I do not envisage an England side under Allardyce or Bruce being exciting to watch.

Sorry, for asking: What does 1/4 mean in this case?

10/1 means for 1 Euro (or pound for you) you get 10 back when your bet wins , right? But 1/4? For 4 Euro you get 1 Euro back? :D (Nah, I know that's rubbish but I don't understand the notation that's why I ask. I am from Germany, most of us are not so familiar with betting on everything.

No thats right. In decimal odds it's 1.25 so you get 25% profit on your stake.

e.g. a £4 bet would return £5 (your stake + 25%).

Championship sides are better than Basel, CSKA Moscow etc.? Seems unlikely to me.

I also don't think that reducing the quality of players would help that much. If a manager can't put a team together out of a group of Premier League players then I don't see why worse players would help.

Wales and Northern Ireland are probably equal in terms of team spirit, unity and organisation. However the difference when the two teams played was that NI were restricted to very few changes while Wales had a player in Gareth Bale who can cross quite well.

I'm a big Tony Pulis fan but do you really think a Welshman would manage England?

If they consider a German for the job why not a Welshman? ;) ( any capable Scotsman available? ).
Tony Pulis, Sam Allardyce...sorry, but I am not convinced that both would bring the Three Lions back on track (meaning playing successfull at tournaments and not only in friendlies )

I liked the Wenger/Southgate combo idea but that doesn't look like it'll be happening.

FA's chief executive Martin Glenn:

The British press, like it or not, are probably the most intensely passionate about the game in the world and that has a spill-over effect. The consequence of which is people probably play not to make a mistake, as opposed to play to win.

Basically saying the press are at least partly responsible then. Fair?
