Ah Colombia. They are that team that you always looks at and wonder why they are in the top 10 of the FIFA world rankings. They qualified for their first world cup in 16 years back in 2014 and proceeded to make it to the last 8 where they lost to Brazil.

Will they achieve something similar this time around, once again led by James Rodriguez? And yes, I will get annoyed at commentators pronouncing it Ha-Mes and not James, even if that is the correct way of saying it. They have a favourable group and should easily make it into the knockout stages.

As for Japan, they have the likes of Yoshida, Honda, Kagawa and Okazaki, but failed to win a game in 2014. Will it be any different for them this time around? It looks a fairly open group and 2nd is achievable for them.

All match chat in here.

Clear deliberate hand ball and first sending off the tournament. Makes things interesting.

Interesting stuff given how the fortunes of England's group are tied to this group.

No question about the handball and penalty, stonewall.

I've been saying Colombia won't get out of this group, Senegal and Poland for me. Just didn't expect Colombia to chuck it in the first minute.

You expecting another "2002" from Seenegal? They dont seem to have much other than Mane

Really like Keita Balde at Monaco, Koulibaly is a monstrous defender, along with Sane who was excellent for Hannover this season. Gueye and Kouyate isn't world class in midfield, but it's solid enough to do a job. They'll be tough to break down and Mane, Keita can provide quality the other end.

Watch them get slaughtered 5-0 by Poland later.

Edit: Sorted by ELO rather than FIFA Rankings, they're the best African team. On paper I'd agree with that.

The turnaround in their results since Aliou Cisse took the job on has been solid. Since the low point of 2015 ACON, they've steadily improved through 2017 and 18. Obviously the World Cup is a step up from African only opposition, so he's still somewhat unproven, but he's done a decent job so far. A midfield of Kouyate, Gueye, and Ndiaye won't be easy for anyone to play through. Sprinkle in a bit of quality up front with Mane on his day, and who knows.

How can a referee and all his minions watching TV think that's a foul on Falcao?

What a clever free kick. Quintero is like a Rodriguez doppelgänger, quality player.

Depends on which Kouyate and Gueye turn up haha.

Japan have been reinvigorated this half and might have gone ahead.
Rodriguez is coming on for Quintero.

Hope Japan seal the win purely for that diving nob up front for Colombia.

Lib is having a nightmare WC. South American football has been exposed, Peru were battered by the vastly superior Denmark, and now Carlos "World Class" Sanchez has made him look a mug yet again.

:D. I know you want to mock Lib a bit (libabit) because Peru was the better team. Thank God that Mexico doesn't count for South America otherwise it would ruin "the statistics" ;)

Japan have now overtaken Scotland for wins at World Cups

Answer 1: What? Is this really Japan's first win at a World Cup? ;)

Answer 2: Fuck it: 125m country against tiny 5m Scotland. About time

Not bad for a country whose national sport is Sumo Wrestling, Baseball, Motorsport, etc.

To be fair Japan have plenty of pedigree at international football, a constant a World Cups for 20 years, loads of AFC cup wins. Whilst Colombia were favourites for this game and probably this whole group, I don't think this can be quite classed as some massive shock.

Not a huge shock but a very good win for Japan. Thanks to Kagawa for the fantasy points too.

They'll be delighted they're getting support from the 1950s.
