He says reaching the semi's would be a success. Roy had better hope we don't meet anybody half decent before then.

Part of me now hopes we go out in the last 16 just to get the donkey out...

Be fine by me. Hodgson is doing as expected with the current talent pool at his disposal I reckon. A lot of English fans just don't seem to be able to come to terms with the fact we are not on a par with the powerhouses of international football at the moment.

Two quarter finals and finishing bottom in a group topped by Costa Rica should not be enough to give Roy another stab at a World Cup.

If we do well and play well, no problem. Doing well means beating a decent side and getting to the semis I reckon. We shouldn't get a top side in the next stage so I'd assume our biggest test would be in the quarters, which if we pass, he's probably earned it. The fact there's no standout candidate to take over anyway helps his cause.

The main point for me is that his football is often boring,he makes errors with substitutions, and for some reason Harry fucking Kane is taking corners. Add to that a shit World Cup and it doesn't look good for Roy does it?

I'm not completely against the idea of keeping Roy on after the Euros, yes he had a really poor World Cup in Brazil but since then we've seen him start to bring through this exciting batch of youngsters into the squad, and I suppose there's something to be said about continuity. If we have a good tournament which has to be semi finals to be classed as 'good' in my opinion, then he should get another 2 years working with and developing these youngsters. The only thing that irks me with Hodgson is his game management skills and at times his style of play isn't the most expressive, although if he gets it spot on like the 2nd half on Thursday I can't complain.

All he's done is pick them and take them for a few training sessions. All the clubs do the main work. He doesn't develop them much at all.

I meant more in terms of how he wants them to play in his system with the national team, do agree with you though.

This is the top and bottom of it. We always expect the world as a nation. We're pretty much doing what we should be doing in recent years with the quality of players we have IMO.

Rather he didn't stay but if he 'does well' (depending what that actually means - I'd class it as the semis) then you can hardly deny the bloke a new contract.

The idea that he's 'doing is expected' is fucking trash too, he's the highest paid manager in International football - I'd like to think that kind of money gets you someone good enough to get a bunch of players over-achieving a little bit.

If he got them over-achieving then he wouldn't be doing as expected would he?

The fact he's the highest paid manager in international football is just another damning indictment of the state of English football too. Our youngsters think they're superstars after a couple of decent seasons because they're paid like one. The current squad is poor by and large and a lot of our players wouldn't get a look in at international level for better countries.

Realistically looking at our first 11 against Wales how many of them would get in the Spanish or German sides? I don't think any would be guaranteed starters which shows you how far behind those we are, I think the majority of their players would walk into our team.

Young footballers definitely don't get paid a lot in other countries.

I suspect he would have gone after the World Cup had there been a suitable replacement.

The media and fans will demand an English coach so the options are limited - I mean Pardew was the favourite about a year ago.

English coaches good enough to manage the national team are pretty scarce though, the only one I wouldn't be against would be Eddie Howe but couldn't see that happening, maybe Gary Neville in the future but he needs to manage somewhere over here first. I think we'd have to go for a foreign manager.

I can't fathom a lot of the criticism of him on here. People surely can't have genuine concerns over the style of play - compared to some of the stodgy, pedestrian football we've become accustomed to from recent England sides this lot are positively easy on the eye. It can't be results either - they've been good ever since the World Cup and we breezed through the qualifiers. Admittedly, none of this is any good if you can't put in a showing at a major tournament and after a desperately disappointing World Cup campaign his job ought to be under pressure if he doesn't meet expectations here.* Reach the quarters and I'll be reasonably happy for him to remain as I think there have been some encouraging signs of progress.

*Just once it would be nice to see us exceed expectations. I don't expect us to win major tournaments but I'd like to think a nation of our stature might be capable of advancing beyond the quarters more than once in a blue moon

Seems rather pointless to be talking about this. Hodgson is busy in France, Dyke won't even be around in a month's time, why say anything right now? Just let events play out and address it later in the summer. Pointless distraction.

I see Rooney wants Hodgson to stay. Of course, any decent manager wouldn't pick him!

Yeah, because he's been awful so far, hasn't he? :eye:

Don't get me wrong, before the tournament started I didn't want him anywhere near the first XI, but he's been one of our stand-out players so far along with Walker and Lallalllalllalllalllalllalllalallalalalalalana.

Fair enough, but at least he learnt from the mistake and corrected it.
