So, Belgium breezed through their group with 3 wins from 3, even managed to win their last game whilst resting their main players. Their reward for that is a game that on paper should see them progress, as they take on Japan. With the quality they have upfront, plus some depth in reserve, you'd back them to win.

But Japan are no mugs despite them scraping through after losing their last game. They might have been a bit fortunate to beat Colombia, but a solid point against Senegal got them over the line. They have some technically tidy footballers, but do they have enough to beat Belgium? I'm not so sure.

So, Belgium to win then? Do Japan have a chance?

Started quite even, but it's been all Belgium for the last 15 minutes.

Looking ominous for Nippon. At times there are 10 of them in their own penalty area.

Another snore fest. Belgium taking one pass too many, not quick enough to get at Japan. Japan seem bizarrely negative, but when they do get on the attack they look dangerous.

What a terrible error from Vertonghan, he put it on a plate for their lad. Probably runs to the keeper if he doesn't get that touch and slow it down. Nice finish mind.

And now Hazard hits the post when he should score. We've got a game at last.

Belgium will unfortunately still come back here.

Hopefully Martinez sees this stadium as Anfield and Belgium as Everton. Japan will be safe as houses.

This is now becoming reminiscent of Belgium’s exit against Wales in the 2016 European Championships. Belgium again have placed too much confidence in their own abilities without considering that their opponents won’t be utterly supine.

Japan playing some very good stuff here, can't stand Martinez and don't know how he's got such a big job, he's shite. Belgium have individual quality though so it's not over, but for me they are over rated as a team, they were crap at the last World Cup and Euros, with the players they have they should be doing far better.

Only Martinez can play one of the best creative midfielders in a deep lying midfield role.

And now Lukaku misses a sitter. Maybe it's not their evening?

That's this over then. Shame. Nice from Japan but just not enough to hold on.

Meh, they only got back into it thanks to a finish they'd never score again in a million years and it gave them the confidence to kick on and get the 2nd. They'll go out to Brazil in the next round, Japan have exposed all their flaws.

That was an awful decision. It makes you wonder what the assistant referee was seeing.
Looks like Feillani will eventually tip the balance for Belgium.

Fair play to Belgium, they showed good fight to come back from 2-0 down.

Was that the best 45 minutes of the World Cup so far?

Absolutely suicidal defending from Japan at the end, held the ball for three and a half of the four minutes of injury time and commit everyone forward for the corner. Superb break, but absolutely moronic from Japan.

Belgium should enjoy it, because Brazil will rip that back line to shreds. They got lucky with the first goal and that tipped it back in their favour. They still look like a massively flawed team.

Japan come out of this game with way more credit than Belgium do, fair play to them. Good technically, scored the better goals, played the better football. Just lacking in the old fashioned stuff. I.e. big physical players and streetwise play at the end of the game. Made Belgium look very average.

Dare I say it was....Kamikaze defending? :gmc:

Yep. Gutted for Japan though, they were brilliant for most of that. Bit more physicality and they'd be a top side.

Great second half shame Japan were the better team imo, but the quality shone through in the end.
