Since no one is giving me feedback in the shoutbox, I may as well post it here... its an interesting story though. Wrote this article myself but put lots of effort in finding research with facts that will catch the readers attention. I think you'll enjoy this

Jorge Sampaoli is enjoying his time as a manager right now. Everything he touches turns to gold. Won the Copa Sudamericana with Universidad de Chile, won the Copa America with Chile and is now on a good run with Sevilla without many real stars on the team. While he’s still not the biggest name in world football, he is slowly becoming one and is only beginning his time in Europe. However it hasn’t always been sunshine and flowers for the Argentinian, he has gone through a lot in his time in South America.

Jorge Sampaoli was born in the Santa Fe province, Argentina. Jorge Sampaoli began his career as a manager for Juan Aurich, a team based in Chiclayo, Peru and it was the ytear 2002. Jorge Sampaoli was hired with very little managerial experience. It was a gamble because Juan Aurich were fighting relegation around that time. Juan Aurich took the gamble and it did not pay off. With Sampaoli only managing the team for 8 games, and only winning 1 of those. Having lost the other 5 and drawing 2. Jorge Sampaoli resigned after 8 games.

Jorge Sampaoli was later hired by Sport Boys. A club often considered the 4th biggest of the country. This team is based in Callao, Peru which is a port city right beside Lima. Its also where the airport “Jorge Chavez” is located. The president of Sport Boys said that he wanted to play similar to Bielsa after recognizing the similarities between Sampaoli and Bielsa. He managed there for about a year before resigning due to the strike that was going on in the league at the time causing the league to be suspended.

In 2004, he was hired by Coronel Bolognesi. A club based in Tacna, Peru. He began travelling south of the country after starting in the north. He qualified for the Copa Sudamericana with Bolognesi in 2006 and 2007 however only managed in the 2006 Copa Sudamericana. This was the peak of his career in Peru after giving them some continental football and finishing in the top 5 for 2 seasons in a row. In the 2006 Copa Sudamericana, he played Universidad San Martin in the preliminary round, another team from Peru. He won on away goals with the match ending 3-3 on aggregate. 1-0 in Tacna, 3-2 in Lima. He later went on to take on Colo-Colo, a Chilean team from Santiago. Often seen as the biggest team in Chile. Sampaoli’s side won 2-1 in Tacna and lost 1-0 in Santiago. Losing the tie on away goals. The interesting thing however is that the winner in Santiago was scored by Arturo Vidal, who Sampaoli later went on to manage for the Chilean NT. Lastly, with Bolognesi, he left in 2006 but he did somewhat of a legacy at the club. Bolognesi ended up winning the tournament clausura (which is the closing stage) in 2007 and that saw them qualify for the Copa Libertadores of 2008.

He took over Sporting Cristal in 2007, and unfortunately, the same results that were seen at Bolognesi were not seen here. Finishing 10th with Cristal, they were fighting relegation for most of the season. Gathering only 4 wins in 17 matches, he also lost the dressing room and was eventually sacked. While Cristal were disappointing, a lot of people blame player power to be the end of Sampaoli’s time in Peru.

That marks the end of his time in Peru, he later went to Chile, then went to Ecuador and then back to Chile. His success in terms of silverware was seen starting his time at Universidad de Chile, going on to win the Apertura in 2011 and 2012 as well as winning the clausura in 2012. However, they also won the Copa Sudamericana. Often regarded as the best ever Sudamericana champions. This success saw him hired as Chile manager. With Chile, he went on to win the Copa America in 2015 and that’s when this became a story. Chile had never won anything in their history, Sampaoli had been the first manager to win Chile a trophy including on their own home ground.

However, this story isn’t yet done. Why is this a story? It seems more like a biography than an actual “story”. Its a story because Sampaoli began his managerial career suffering, receiving criticism that may have hugely hindered his progression as a manager had things gone just a little differently.

One of the reasons Sampaoli suffered in Peru was the obvious lost of a dressing room at Sporting Cristal. His sacking could have really hurt him as he may have been seen as not ready to manage a top dog in a league. However, he managed in Peru for 5 years. His salary was extremely low when he first arrived. When he managed at Sport Boys, he won a salary of only $2000. He was homeless and had to sleep at a firestation in Callao. Nevertheless, Jorge Sampaoli stayed in Peru suffering in order to work his way up as a manager. He accepted the conditions of working in Peru. He wasn’t valued at all during his time in Peru.

As a Peruvian, I can say that this is a story to learn from. While the quality of the best players compared to other South American countries is a concern, there is unfortunately no patience with some managers. Jorge Sampaoli could have become Peru’s manager instead of Chile’s. However due to being lowly valued, he moved on to greater things. He was given more of a chance in Chile, and built his managerial career from there. He is now at Sevilla and has just beaten Atletico Madrid, the champions league runner ups. He will later take on Real Madrid and Barcelona. 2 of the biggest clubs in world football. Who could imagine that all of this happened because he accepted to suffer during his time with Juan Aurich and Sport Boys. A manager who still has lots of time to move on to even more great things had his horrible start but choosing to accept the conditions, it has all payed off.

Not a bad read Lib, although it will be difficult for those people not interested in South American football to be interested in this article.

I'm not really interested in South American football, but I do like the zero to hero storyline and was wondering why you felt Sampaoli struggled so badly in Peruvian football when he has succeeded so well elsewhere? Is this because of an underlying issue with Peruvian football as a whole or just because Sampaoli failed to adapt to the Peruvian style?

I'm not sure what happened at Cristal but he was homeless with Sport Boys due to being paid ridiculously low wages. I do believe this is an issue with Peruvian football, its just a mess overall.
