Dons Fans Are Buying Into What Aberdeen Are Thelin
October 21, 2024 2:36 pm Leave your thoughtsPittodrie Stadium outfit, Aberdeen, have won the Scottish Premiership title four times during their history and although their last success came way back in the 1984/95 campaign, they have finished in second spot 17 times.
Dons fans were hoping their form would change again when they finished as runners up in 2016/17, as they also reached both domestic Cup finals, and they consolidated that with another runners up spot the following season. However, that was where their recent success ended and following a 2019 tie in with United States Major League Side Atlanta United, they quickly raced through four managers in three years.
In June 2024 the side changed focus, and arguably took a risk on 46 year old Swedish gaffer Jimmy Thelin on a three year contract from Elfsborg. It was a busy summer for the club as he made six new signings to help implement his preferred style of play and get the team ticking again, and as we come out of the October international break, his impact has been nothing but outstanding so far. For those Scottish fans who like to dabble with online sports betting, there will not have been many who went for the odds available on this kind of start.
Seven games into the domestic Scottish league campaign, he has overseen seven straight victories and they are tied with reigning holders Celtic in top spot on 21 points. This week is set to be a big one as their first game back in a trip to Parkhead, and it is not beyond the realms of possibility that come next week they may be two points clear at the summit. They are also progressing well in the Scottish League Cup.
Aberdeen’s form so far has taken plenty by surprise in the Scottish game and they have won themselves a lot of plaudits so far, and one of those is Pittodrie hero Willie Miller who has described Thelin’s playing ethos as being a style that you can ‘easily get involved with, easily applaud’ and ‘easily support’. However fans themselves may wish to describe his system, results so far show that it is clearly working and they have a plus nine goal advantage at this stage of the season. Seven out of seven tells its own story, but his over all record is actually 13 wins out of 13 across all competitions so far.
Thelin is very much an unknown for most fans north north, and south, of the United Kingdom border, but having led Elfsborg to two runners up spots, and missing out on the title in 2023 by only goal difference, his reputation had certainly been growing and some clubs in Europe had started to take notice of him, but Aberdeen made the first move.
Few expect this form to continue, they will have a wobble at some point and then it is about how they react to that and get back on track, but his impact so far should certainly be applauded and lasting for 13 games, this does not appear to be your normal kind of ‘new manager bounce’ and ‘honeymoon period’.
