Liverpool’s Evolving Strategy Under Arne Slot: Insights from Emile Heskey

With three wins in as many games, there is no doubt that Liverpool have made a great start to the season. Early doubts over Arne Slot’s suitability for the job are largely dormant now. Further, the Reds’ recent win at Old Trafford has sparked talk of a serious title challenge.

Liverpool finished third last season, nine points behind champions Manchester City. The latest bookmaker odds predict the Reds to end up in the same position this time around, with City and Arsenal finishing above them.

So can Slot’s man surpass those expectations and land a second Championship title? Or will it be a season of transition following the departure of Jurgen Klopp? Let’s find out with none other than Emile Heskey.

A former star speaks

Former Liverpool and England striker Emile Heskey has some interesting thoughts on his former team’s aspirations for the season. In a recent conversation, he spoke about his growing confidence in the new boss Slot. Plus, he shared some interesting thoughts regarding the team itself and their prospects for the rest of the 24/25 season.

Unlike some doom-sayers, Heskey does not expect the Reds’ performance to decline as the season progresses. Instead, Heskey feels confident his old club will have a successful run under the guidance of Slot.

Top Four target

The former Liverpool player strongly believes improvements will come to the Reds this season. It doesn’t matter if the team has been relatively quiet in the transfer market. “Change is constant, and soon the focus will be on how quickly the players can adapt to Arne Slot,” he was saying. “A good first season for Liverpool would be top four.”

He went on to emphasize his faith in the team and saw no problem with the squad’s lack of transfer activity. “I believe Liverpool’s current squad is sufficient for this season, provided they can maintain the fitness of the starting eleven.” He explained that keeping the first-choice team free from injury is a problem all squads in the league face. “It is not limited to Liverpool. If they can avoid injuries, I feel our players may provide a challenge.”

“I attended the final pre-season game against Seville at Anfield, and sincerely, it was very enjoyable. The way the Reds under Slot play is an exciting, high-risk game, that will keep you on the edge of your seat. It’s great to watch the team as a spectator. I believe Liverpool will be competitive, but a lot will depend on how well the squad keeps up with things.”

Heskey’s thoughts on the United victory

“We were relentless on Sunday, putting United under pressure, forcing mistakes, creating opportunities, and seizing them immediately. It is clear that despite winning the FA Cup, United remain under pressure to perform. Our win comes at a great shock to them, and adds up in unsettling the Red Devils.”

“Any player will tell you that in a local derby, or any game of this size that means a lot to the fans, it doesn’t matter what happened before; if you can pull off a win, you have some breathing room. That is exactly what United accomplished last season (in their 4-3 FA Cup victory), but this year Liverpool simply picked them apart and finished them off.”

He went on to say that the difference between the former manager and the current is more apparent now. Their approaches to ballplay are somewhat different. Jürgen Klopp focused more on all-out attacks, while Slot’s way is having a more organized team. Still, Slot intends to avoid entirely compromising on attacking freedom.

Chiesa to make a big impact

Many Liverpool fans are tense over the club’s lack of transfer activity since Klopp departed. Italian star Federico Chiesa and Georgian keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili were the only notable summer signings. And while the latter seems likely to spend this season backing up Alisson, Heskey thinks Chiesa can be a big hit with fans.

He added, “Liverpool have had a strange transfer window because they have to comply with financial fair play regulations, but they already have a terrific group, and Federico Chiesa is a great addition. I believe Slot can get the most out of him with the system that they play.”
