What can we Expect to see from the Premier League this year
December 5, 2024 10:05 am Leave your thoughtsThe 2024/2025 Premier League season is set to be one of the most exciting in recent years, with a managerial merry-go-round over the summer meaning many teams will evolve considerably from their 2023/2024 selves. Add in three exciting teams promoted from the Championship, including Ipswich, Southampton and Leicester, for even more potential intrigue.
Can the Foxes stay up a little under a decade after winning the Premier League in such jaw dropping fashion? Will Ipswich hit the ground running after back-to-back promotions? And can Southampton experience the same success playing Russell Martin’s meticulous passing game? These are just some of the questions on Premier League fans’ minds.
However, it’s not just the newly promoted teams we need to worry about. On the other side of the table title contenders Arsenal will be hoping to finally break the curse and overhaul Pep Guardiola’s relentless Manchester City machine. At Merseyside, Arne Slot fills Jurgen Klopp’s outlandishly sized boots with the Dutch manager tasked with guiding the Reds back into the title race.
It’s all shaping up to be one of the most intriguing seasons over the past few years especially considering how things have started. Manchester City and Arsenal both currently look flawed while Liverpool has blasted expectations for Slot’s first season in charge clean out of the water.
Whether you’re just sitting back to watch or have active wagers on the line, learning about the main crunch points for this season will help you predict the events to come. This is particularly important at betting sites with these platforms offering long-term predictions alongside weekly accumulators and bets for individual fixtures.
With all that in mind get strapped in as we look at some of the main things to watch out for during this season.
Arne Slot’s Liverpool and the post Klopp fallout
Jurgen Klopp’s departure from Anfield was a seismic shock to the Merseyside club, especially with his self-styled “Liverpool 2.0” being in contention for a quadruple until very late in the season. Arne Slot arrived as the German’s replacement fresh from guiding Feyenoord back to the summit of Dutch football.
So far, the manager has passed nearly every test put in front of him. The only loss has been a shock defeat to Nottingham Forest who are flying higher than anybody expected under Nuno Espirito Santo. Liverpool’s miserly defence has only conceded a handful of goals, and they are in the driver’s seat at the top of the Premier League. This is an area to keep an eye on.
Manchester City go searching for a fifth Premier League
Pep Guardiola achieved the unprecedented success of winning four Premier League titles in a row and all eyes will be on a fifth. The Manchester City machine just keeps on winning with the Cityzens becoming particularly notorious for finishing seasons in absolute form steamrolling all before them.
Things are different this season though especially with Rodri’s potentially season-ending injury sustained against Arsenal back in September. The wheels have come off slightly but it’s too early to tell whether City will miss out on that all-important fifth Premier League in a row. As always we can certainly expect an uptick in form after March when things really get serious.
Stick or twist for Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal
Arsenal has shown notable improvement under Mikel Arteta narrowly missing out on the Premier League title twice over the past two seasons. Nobody is saying that the Gunners aren’t back to the top level after several years in the doldrums, but will Arteta’s reign really be a success without another trophy to accompany the 2020 FA Cup?
It’s stick or twist for Mikel Arteta’s team now with the Spaniard playing increasingly conservative and risk-averse football. Arsenal has also picked up a disciplinary problem with several red cards already this season. Can the Gunners sustain another title race or has the balloon burst? Only time will tell.
Manchester United’s sinking ship
It wasn’t long ago that Erik Ten Hag was setting new targets after extending his Manchester United contract but the Dutchman had been clinging on for quite some time and was finally dismissed before the November international break. This was far too late for many supporters who were sick of watching the United ship sink deeper and deeper into ruin. One of the main things to watch for the rest of the season is how the incoming Ruben Amorim gets on at Old Trafford. Fresh from revolutionising Sporting Lisbon in Portugal, the young manager plays an exciting 3-4-3 system that the Red Devils will be hoping can turn around their fortunes.
Second season trophy for Ange Postecoglou?
Ange Postecoglou showed no signs of backing down after a reporter quizzed him on his habit of winning trophies in his second season in charge, replying that he “always” wins trophies in his second season. While this may be true at his other clubs, the perennial nearlymen Tottenham won’t be quite as easy to lead to success. Despite this, Spurs already knocked Manchester City out of the Carabao Cup, a competition that many fans will hope is a feasible bit of silverware to aim for. Whether Big Ange can make good on his second season trophy promise is difficult to predict at present as there have been some erratic performances, but nobody can say there isn’t a chance.
Can Ipswich survive back-to-back promotions?
It’s not often a club can celebrate back-to-back promotions from League One to the Championship and then the Premier League, but Ipswich isn’t just any old club. This is particularly true under the stewardship of Kieran McKenna who has worked absolute wonders since joining the Tractor Boys. Forget about calling the winner, this season it’s much harder to call the three teams that will be unlucky enough to drop back into the Championship. Betting sites are particularly helpful places to find the latest predictions with Premier League relegation odds showcasing an extremely difficult area to call. A nail-biting fight to the end is certainly something to expect, but for which teams? This remains difficult to predict at present.
Crunch time for Eddie Howe’s Newcastle
Eddie Howe did a marvellous job qualifying for the Champions League back in 2022/2023, although the congested fixture list got in the way of securing another top four finish last season. Newcastle ended up finishing seventh outside the European places altogether.
For many this was a backwards step, although Howe will argue that his team may not have been completely ready for the additional fixtures required when you play in Europe’s top competition. Regardless, it’s crunch time for Howe at Newcastle with some insiders claiming that the club’s Saudi ownership might be looking to replace him if the Magpies can’t reinstate themselves among the continent’s elite clubs.
This is another area to keep an eye on especially with Jose Mourinho lurking on the sidelines reportedly very discontent with his life in Turkey. He recently expressed interest in the Newcastle job if it becomes available so Howe will need to be on his toes to avoid being replaced.
