Hope this doesn't become worldwide coronavirus.

I've been in China since 2010 and meant to be moving back home (from Shanghai) in a couple of weeks. Got flights booked for the 8th Feb. If I was coming alone I'd cancel and buy a new one for tomorrow.

Unfortunately me and the missus are bringing our dog (Jimmy) with us and he needs a health check 7 days before we fly. Problem is we can't get his health check done right now while everywhere is shut for Chinese new year... So we might be able get it sorted and fly a few days earlier than planned, but probably no sooner. Just hope they haven't quarantined us in Shanghai by then like they have those in Wuhan already.

Weird feeling here now. Combination of everything being closed for new year and pissing rain for three days and nobody wanting to risk catching the virus means the neighbourhood is like a ghost town. Think much of Shanghai is. And we're just holed up in the apartment all day, only going downstairs with a mask on and hood up looking like a Mortal Kombat character to let Jimmy do his toilet and buy more beer (me, not him).

Genuinely don't know how this is going to play out. Hope shit calms down. How's the feeling where you are? Worry it'll come over there?

I'm in Hong Kong and they are desperately trying to keep it from breaking out here. They seem to be catching people before they get into the general population, but I do think it's only a matter of days before it breaks out, given that it can be in someone's system for days before symptoms show themselves.

I work as a teacher, so I'm hoping they cancel all classes for the rest of the week, that would be sweet.

Yeah, the school I finished at before CNY has pushed back the start of their next semester from the middle of Feb to the end of Feb. Think that's a citywide directive. Glad I'm not going back to rooms of 10 kids who haven't been taught to cover their faces when they cough or sneeze.

How's the feeling there? People worried? How long you been there too anyway?

Live in rural backwater by Beijing now, been in the country off and on for more than twenty years now and was here during the SARS crisis. I'm more worried about getting caught up in the prevention measures than the disease itself, clearly serious but ultimately not a great danger to a healthy adult and from what I read less dangerous to kids than SARS was.

Bloody hell, I said coronavirus had no chance of reaching Mansfield then I find out there's a Stags fan living in Shanghai.

Wuhan is home to two labs linked to China's bio-warfare program.

Probably just a coincidence.

Fancy picking us up from the airport?

Little change here since I started the thread on Saturday. Still holed up, still only going downstairs to let Jimmy out and buy ale. Streets still dead. At least the rain has stopped though.

I see they're restricting travel to HK now, JJ. From what I understand the locals have been wanting that for years.

Hope you're well Sagat! Have a couple of friends there at the moment. Mainly similar situations to yourself in being bored and worried.

The two UK cases were just up the road from me at Castle Hill Hospital. Anyone know where you can buy a cheap hazmat suit? :animatedf:

Not too bad cheers mate. Didn't manage to change the flights so still due to leave on the 8th. Personally less worried about it now than when I started this thread.

UK Government not ruling out possible extreme measures with cases now up to 35.

These apparently include cancelling large public events, shutting schools, widespread isolation, possible banning of leaving homes and asking retired health professionals to temporarily come out of retirement to assist with prevention/treatment.

I think it's basically inevitable. You don't want everyone preparing at once though, causes too much of a panic and too much of a strain on supply lines, so you ramp up the warnings gradually.

Little did we think that when reading this thread in January, that three months down the line we'd be the second worst affected country in the world in terms of officially reported deaths.

I do wonder whether the lockdown has done more harm than good. The difference in mortality rates in places with next to no lockdown is negligible, and we still have no idea how many people will die because illnesses went undiagnosed or untreated in hospitals that are almost deserted. If the media and government had remained silent, would we even have noticed there was a pandemic at all?

What? You mean if no one had told us 50,000 people in the UK had died from a new virus we might not have known?

Well, yes. I guess.

Well that first line aged like a fine milk.

Pleased to report that me and the missus and our dog (Jimmy) got home okay. Been here doing fuck all since though. She's off back to China for a bit at the end of the month coz her visa is up. Me and our dog (Jimmy) are staying here.

Well whilst things are looking more positive potentially as a vulnerable person I will still be making sure I am as safe and well as possible so I don't end up one of the unlucky fewdead but if others don't have a great concern for the health of others then so be it - cannot make people wear masks or social distance.

We can only control what we do really and by now people will want some kind of normality back I guess.

I presume anyone still trying to claim this is all a bit of a hoax and OTT hasn't had to suffer losing someone from this or had the virus themselves for much more than a day or two.

Satirising what the media discourse would look like in an honest world.

Oh.

So you’re suggesting there aren’t over 40,000 people dead in the UK from a suggested virus?

That's a weird thing to ask someone who never said anything remotely like that.

I reckon it came from China. If that makes me a racist, so be it.

That’s not the point.

Im asking why the article posted is both ‘satirical’ and wouldnt be be posted in ‘an honest world’.
