That doesn't even make sense.

Surely an upset has to be measured in how unlikely it was to happen beforehand? As for "beating a game on rookie mode":
It makes perfect sense. Try reading it again. Or do you want me to write it in rookie mode so you can understand it ;)

No, here's why it doesn't make sense:

You reply to a post arguing that Nottingham Forest was representing one of the strongest leagues in Europe at the time = ergo, they weren't that much of an underdog.

Your reply is that the Premier League isn't as strong nowadays. It's just way off mark and completely irrelevant, completely disregarding the original point as if you didn't even read it.

I didn't say that Forest were in the strongest league? That's a matter of opinion, someone else's opinion which was incorrect.

This was your reply to the post stating that Forest represented one of the strongest leagues in Europe at the time (which you're now claiming to be an incorrect statement):

Yes, and currently this is one of the weakest top level leagues in Europe

Anyway, I've been on this merry-go-round with you before and it's tedious.

My "Yes" statement was recognition of his post, not that he was correct. The league is as weak as well hydrated piss this season, if a big team had won it EVERYONE would brush it under the carpet saying it's no biggy.

You've been on the merry-go-round before, but usually it's just a case of you pissing in the wind.

Still cant see Leicester winning it, I would love to see them do like most people but just cant see it. Mind you I've been saying this since christmas and said the same about Bournemouth in the championship last season

This.

I leave it up to anyone to come up with an example that comes close to what Leicester are on the brink of achieving. The presumed gap between them and the perennial title contenders was much, much greater than that which Nottingham Forest overcame, not to mention that it's not a single upset such as the miracle on ice or similar feats - it's been done over a full season.

Nothing comes close.

Edit: For perspective; most remembered upsets were previously considered extremely unlikely. But had you asked for Leicester's chances of winning the league in august, you wouldn't have called it extremely unlikely. You would have called it literally impossible.

Denmark did it over six (?) games, like Greece. Leicester doing it over 38 was far more unlikely.

Russia (I'm assuming you're referring to the 1980 Lake Placid final) was a one off, just like the USA losing any basketball final. You'd have gotten far more than 100/1 for putting your money on Leicester to win the Premier League.

Salty has never attended Anfield.

So back to your endless list it is, I'll be waiting.

Had the rest of the top 5 been like this...

  1. Leicester
  2. Chelsea
  3. Arsenal
  4. Man City
  5. Man Utd
Then I would agree.

Other than Tottenham for Chelsea, the rest of the top five is exactly like that...

17 to 1 in that very well researched article mate. Nowhere near Leicester.

As for the standard of the league, still not sure how it's relevant. An upset is defined by the likelihood of it happening, no? Which in august was completely fucking impossible, to put it frankly.

The title race is over imo - it's Leicester's.

The belittling of this achievemnt in this thread is astonishing though. To say its been an easy premier league this year is ridiculous. It's largely the same as the one that Chelsea won last year. Instead of the Premier League being dominated by the big clubs we are now instead seeing a more even playing field brought on by a few things:

1. Increased revenue of smaller clubs
2. Better recruitment of smaller clubs in comparisson to bigger clubs
3. Increasing evening of the playing field with advances in training, sports nutrition etc.

As for the Leicester vs Forest argument, its been raging all year and to be honest, both are fantastic achievements in completely different eras. I'd argue that Greece's Euro win is probably bigger than all of them considering how crap that side was.

I didn't call it "the greatest thing in sports history", as I'm sure you're well aware. I called it the biggest upset and you seem to have run out of examples trying to disprove me.

Leicester winning the PL is like a bug in the Matrix. It's ridiculous, and only belittled because people have gotten used to the thought. Rewind 10 months and we'd all realize how fucked up this is.

In fairness, I'm going to apologise. I misread "Upset" for "Best sporting accomplishment". Please accept my sincerest apologies.

Greece was a fascinating example of organisation against individual quality. But they, like Denmark, did it over six games. And they did it by man marking in a really weird way and crossing from the right, which was exploited eventually but took that one single tournament by storm. It wouldn't have worked over a season, because no shockingly weird tactic ever does.

I reckon it does come close in odds beforehand though, it was a ridiculous feat.

So you agree? Biggest upset in history?

Yes it is. This is my new Lucas Leiva, I will argue this to death no matter how many people are wrong about it.

aaaaaaaaahhhhhh but Greece and Denmark had to qualify 1st..............add the 2 odds at the beginning of each process ie odds at beginning of qualification process and odds at beginning of tournament and you will find that makes a bigger odds against total................and therefore you are wrong and i resty my case.

The "Miracle on Ice" is the nickname given to a February 22 medal-round men's ice hockey game during the 1980 Olympic Winter Games, in which a team of amateur and collegiate players from the United States, led by coach Herb Brooks, defeated the Soviet Union team, who were considered to be the best hockey team in the world and won every tournament previous bar 1.
