I know we have a generic match day thread that we’re all supposed to contribute to, but this game is worthy of its own thread - virtually a season-defining fixture.

In all seriousness, the first home fixture of the season is always an exciting one. The win last Saturday against a decent Shrewsbury side has really whet the appetite. Barnsley got off to a flyer, taking advantage of an out of sorts Oxford side, so I imagine their fans will be well up for this one too.

Micheal Collins through up a suprise when it came to the starting XI - dropping Matt Killgallon and starting RB Joe Riley at RW. Very clever in hindsight, it gave the team more of a defensive balance away from home. At Valley Parade, I cant see this happening. Although young miller lead the line well, I fully expect Eoin Doyle to make his first start.

So;

GK: Richard O’Donnell

RB: Kelvin Mellor
CB: Anthony O’Connor
CB: Nat Knight-Percival/Ryan McGowan
LB: Adam Chicksen

DCM: Hope Akpan
DCM: Josh Wright ©️

RW: Sean Scannell
CAM: Jack Payne
LW: Sherwin Seedorf

CF: Eoin Doyle

Tough one this, Barnsley are obviously a decent side. But, this team of ours seems to be going underneath the radar for the time being - I’ll go for an optimistic 2-0 win.

Tickets are selling OK in the Barnsley end, I hear - 1,600 sold thus far. Only just over 15,200 ST sold this season, which means we’ll have a drop in attendances when compared to previous years, but I’m hoping for 18500 in attendance here.

Up the fucking chickens.

One of the Yorkshire derbies and although I think Bradfud have a decent team the dingles are gonna stuff them

2-2 I'm sure they think they'll walk the league(I do tbf) after beating Oxford, but they had Tony McMahon in defence so you have to take a few goals off for that.

Should be a good game, come on Millwall do us a favour for once and take Bradshaw.

My prediction is Barnsley to go 2-0 up, us to pull it back to 2-2 then bottle it in last minute and concede.

Very interesting game. Two teams with impressive opening wins, Yorkshire derby with a big expectant crowd, our first away game and Bradfords first home game of the season, set up to be a cracker.

Bradford will surely present more of a challenge than Oxford did, and I feel a point would be a decent return, but when you've won your opening game 4-0 it's hard not to be confident.

Maybe last season but not this as your the ones with McMahon :fl:
You Yorkies are really going overboard on this.

We get he wasn't your best player and you think you have a better option now. He still played 40 times for you last year as you finished comfortably mid table, so the idea of a dribbling idiot falling over his own laces that you're all trying so hard to paint just can't ring true.

Don't get me wrong, if people were here asking about Tony McMahon then receiving a bitter Yorkshire opinion would be entirely reasonable. But you lot literally can't see an Oxford fan without mentioning how much you don't miss this apparently average player and it's proper odd.

Really it’s more the fact he’s just a massive w@nker than his footballing ability.

First, apologies to Barnsley for derailing what should be a celebration of the world's greatest team.

But now I need to know...Why?

I'll give this one a go, probably a few reasons that could probably contribute.

He's an experienced pro who most City fans would agree that he had a big influence over the squad last season. From August up until December we were flying and if I remember rightly it was automatics kind of form.

January came, Scunthrope interest came about, he wanted to go but a fee couldn't be agreed. Here's where a lot of fans think he downed tools, caused a stir in the dressing room and from then we hit was relegation form, absolutely horrific and no effort at all.

He was pretty much touting Charlie Wyke out being his best mate from the Teeside, Charlie has obviously left us now but I'm sure his head was turned 6 months ago by McMahon. His general on the field antics are pathetic and not something I enjoy.

When people take the piss we are not lying. Look at his assist record and you will think he is Beckham, he can deliver a good ball to be fair but he took EVERY set piece. His defending his pretty bad, he made some really average wingers look like Ronaldo.

Maybe he needed a fresh start and you might see a positive McMahon.

No offence to Oxford but what else would we use to have a bit of banter with them other than one of our most 'controversial' players joining them? That time when they called the game off 2 minutes before kick off? It's not like there's a lot of overlap.

Honourable mention to the first time we played Oxford when they got back into the league and Jake Wright talked about how he had a score to settle because we'd released him when he was a kid and you turned up and lost 5-0 and he got sent off.

It’s McMahon’s ego and general ‘antics’ that made him so unlikeable, winding up opponents and fans take priority over trying to play, his general greed such as taking every set piece or individual moments such as late in the Play Off final when he shot from an impossible angle late on rather than rolling the ball to the striker six yards out. You’ll see it sooner rather than later no doubt.

To tomorrow’s game, I could see us winning similarly to when we beat Rotherham 1-0 early last season, I could equally see us getting pumped 3-0. Shrewsbury created a lot last week but had no one on the end of things, if we do the same tomorrow I don’t expect Barnsley to be as toothless.
I wrote in the other thread but to any away fans going by car, to set off early as there are lots of roadworks going on tomorrow on routes into Bradford.

Honestly it might be me but when I see a Bradford fan has posted I don't need to change topic to make sure I have some banter with them.

Maybe I'm a big deal in Bradford and you can't pass up the chance. It just comes off as weird.

I guess Jake Wright settled his score by being in the Championship, a level Bradford haven't played at since his professional debut. But congrats on bringing up another player your team released for absolutely no reason and sounding bitter.

Sorry, he forced his way on to every set piece and the club was powerless to stop him? I'd be more worried about whoever your manager was.

He took every set piece because he was the best at them. His assists stats prove that.

You’ve signed a naff player and you seem to be having some sort of crisis about it, it happens to everyone in the lower leagues, we signed Dom Poleon last year and I tried to tell myself it wasn’t a bad signing either.

Good zinger there, would have to point out that jake Wright had to leave Oxford to ever have a chance of playing in the Champ, I eagerly await the continuation of our banter. I’m not sure it will reach the heady heights of you coming into the thread and saying Barnsley will win 1 million- nil though.

Which is fine by me, because I can watch Oxford release a player and not feel the need to drone on bitterly about him. Whereas Bradford fans have now brought up two players they released in this thread, with absolutely no prompting from anyone.

My original comment was about Barnsley. It wasn't based on anything to do with Bradford. Again, this weird idea that Oxford fans and Bradford fans should be seeking out your excellent banter wherever we go.

The thing is, I haven't defended the McMahon signing at all. Check my first post about it. What I actually asked was why you lot insisted on mumbling on about him, with the idea that maybe you could stop for everyone's benefit.

Edit: anyway that's enough from me, because I'm derailing a promotion bandwagon to join in a debate no one cares about. You Bradford fans are about to see the sort of champagne football that will bring a tear to your eye. Try and enjoy it.

Barnsley were decent to be fair, pressed all over the field and moved it well. Didn’t realise they have Moore and Bradshaw up front, they will do very well this season.

As for us it was a mixed bag. Don’t think we did too badly but we gifted them two goals with awful errors. And Doyle looked completely isolated up front so the tactics need to change there. Not convinced at all abou Collins gameplan and it’s madness we are starting NKP over McGowan or Killa. Impressed by a few of the new lads though and they will get better playing together more.

If we had Tony we’d have lost 4-0 like Oxford last week.

The only reason you didn't lose 4-0 (or more) like Oxford was Richard O'Donnell. Was he the only Bradford player who touched the ball today?

Before any Bradford fans come in screaming arrogance too I'd just like to say this is not a pop at Bradford in general, just purely based on todays game. 2-0 was a flattering scoreline for them considering the chances we had and they didn't register one shot on target.

If this was played and Oakwell and the scoreline and statistics for the match reversed I'd be fuming.

Bantamigo summed it up really, reckon we’ve lost to the eventual champions which most will do this year so I won’t lose any sleep over a side with the squad Barnsley have.
For us, loads to improve on now things are starting to settle like who should be starting and better suited formations, we didn’t set up or play with any real threat today but I’ll be more worried if I’m saying this in a few weeks when we’ve had time to get sorted.

He made a couple of decent saves but most of your shots were wayward.

Think you can afford to be arrogant this season as you will go up. I’ve said you were a good side so what more do you want me to say? I’ve got to take positives from our performance and frankly I don’t give a shit about Barnsley, go win the league if you want. We’ve probably played about 4 games as a first 11 including preseason, we had 11 debutants last week, we’ve got a manager who’s managed 2 games in his entire career, we were playing against a stacked side who’ve been together for ages. Weird comment.
