There’s the very interesting extra bit about relegation only if the club has somewhere to definitely play next season. Hard to see how the NL can guarantee that, or have enough clubs who would want to start a season behind closed doors.

But then that would massively complicate giving Barrow the promotion place as well, if the clubs in the play-offs aren’t just going to be denied a chance of promotion but then stuck in a league that’s dormant. I feel like it’s going to be extremely messy unless League Two and the NL are basically completely aligned in the choices they take.

True, but this is affecting Mansfield as much as it is Notts, clubs in league 2 can’t start without fans anymore or less than they do in the conference.

I’d be happy for them to move back the season to October/November to allow a greater chance of a season being played out with as many games with fans there as possible.

Obviously the downside to that is you’re planning for a future that you’ve no idea on how it’s going to take shape as in whether it reappears etc in the winter.

I can’t see there being any real difference in start times for league 1/2 and the conference etc.

Dunno how true it is and I can’t remember where I read it, which isn’t very helpful, but read earlier that L2 thought they could start behind closed doors if necessary because the set up exists and interest would be there to sell streaming through iFollow. That obviously wouldn’t be the case for most NL clubs, but would put us in a particularly bad position because we probably do have the support to make it viable.

We do, but it still wouldn’t bring in anywhere near the revenue - not even close. One subscription to it is a tenner - but we couldn’t budget for it as you’d have no idea how many people will take it up? Some of the older generation won’t bother as they won’t have or understand the technology - also you wouldn’t just watch by yourself either - realistically you’re going to have “parties” where groups get together to watch the match.

Someone at Mansfield reckoned that on the basis we’ve averaged 4,300 home fans the last 3 seasons we’d be lucky to break 1,000 subscriptions. 1,000 at a tenner each game ain’t a lot.

I really, really don’t see that working.

So, the EFL appears to be upholding L2 relegation and having play-offs. Presumably we’ll now do the same!?!

It appears the EFL proposed framework is the accepted way forward according to Dale Vince, who is on the end of some abuse from Tranmere fans.

Well I still don’t get why league 2 voted not to have relegation tbh, silly idea.

I didn’t understand it then and I don’t now, you can’t have promotion but not relegation, you either have both or nothing.

they are a feisty lot - just read the League 2 season ending thread - even at their most upset Notts fans are much more sensible than Tranmere fans on there.

I don't think the EFL have confirmed a cut-off point for a start game. I mean, if fans were allowed back in under some form of guise in, say, October, would the NL delay the season start until then? Would the EFL find that acceptable? Or do they have to start in August?

The Stevenage Chairman said something similar a few days ago because they'd relegated and also lose the ability to stream their games because that agreement isn't in the NL so they see it as a double whammy.

Maybe Stevenage should've tried to win a few more games...

Radford has said he’d prefer the season to start when there are fans, whenever that may be. I think most chairman would think the same!

From what our Chief Exec has been saying, it sounds like they're delaying until September at the minute, or at least there have been discussions about delaying until then to give more time to get fans back in.

Not sure you could delay beyond the end of September, though.

It certainly won't be forgotten how 20 clubs tried to pull off such a scandal, don't worry about that.

The problem being is bud is that most fans of league 2 clubs didn’t agree to it either.

I remember how exceptionally grim the conference is (sorry) and know how I’d have felt had we been denied our place back. It wasn’t their finest moment

I'm jumping ahead here, but it would be utterly typical if Notts' first promotion in a decade took place in an empty stadium.

No reason why the NL can’t start the same day next season as the EFL is there?

I've said it before and I'll say it again - as much as I dislike Stevenage for a multitude of reasons, the decision to relegate them is utterly unfair and I was pleased when 20 out of the 24 L2 clubs voted for no relegation this year.

Just ask yourself this: are the chairmen of these 20 clubs all good pals with Boro's owner? I don't think so, and I believe they only voted the way they did cos they thought sending Boro down when Macc are in the mess they're in would be unfair. For starters, Macc not playing their players on time basically equates to gaining an unfair advantage is it not?

People are letting their personal dislike for anything Stevenage related to cloud their judgement.

And btw, we're one club short and everybody is assuming Barrow in for Bury, and that would make sense. What about the other spot - are the NL play offs even going to happen?

I kind of agree, but then there shouldn’t be any promotion either. You can’t have one or the other - League Two were attempting to have their cake and eat it.

They voted for no relegation as part of an attempt to gain leverage over the NL and reduce the number of promotion spots.

I also think that Stevenage having an owner with some level of competence meant that he could advocate for them to other owners whereas I doubt Macclesfield's owner would have had the credibility to do the same.

Macclesfield have been atrocious this season. Add in the points deductions and any team would have to be inexplicably bad to finish below them.

And Stevenage were.

You really believe they wanted to reduce the number of promotion spots? Nah, I don't think so. I rather think they were only too aware of the whole Macc situation and didn't think it fair to condemn a side when said side had a good chance of staying up if this season was like any other.

Yep, Stevenage were abysmal this season but it's wrong to say Macc were atrocious, or at least they weren't back when they were getting paid on time. And iirc they also had to let go of three first team players in January in an effort to cut the wage bill.

I don't care which club comes down from L2 but one should. I now expect the playoffs to take place. There's no precedent for just giving Harrogate promotion.

It's in the EFL rules that they can accept EITHER the 2nd place team OR the play off winners;-

10.1.3 Promotion and Relegation between League Two and The National League

(a) At the end of each Season the Champion club of The National League and The National League Runner Up (be that determined on the basis of League position alone or by way of play off competition) shall be eligible to apply for promotion to The League

I understand that they can do pretty much what they want but as the EFL are planning playoffs and the Conference are hinting that they'll follow their lead then I do think the playoffs are more likely than not.
