Nirvana- Nevermind (1990)

Nominated by: PaulHaddock

image.jpeg

This iconic 90s album was made by American grunge band Nirvana, formed of Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl (though Dave was a new addition).

The album contains softer melodic songs like Polly, which there were few and far between on their earlier album, whilst also keeping the raw anger that made Nirvana a household name. In Bloom is widely thought of as one of Cobain's best lyrical pieces.

This was my nomination and so, the song I nominate, is Breed; possibly the simplest riff in existence can create a destructive yet brilliant song:

Regarded as the album that brought grunge to a worldwide audience, it has sold 24 million copies to date.

Everything Must Go (1996)

image.jpeg

Nominated by: PaulHaddock

Another of my nominations. Made in the wake of the sudden disappearance of guitarist Richey Edwards, Everything Must Go is thought to be the Manic's best work (not for me though).

The album is in stark contrast to their previous album, The Holy Bible, largely moving away from the punk image they'd so far given themselves. The album was more instrumented and certainly more mainstream.

My favourite song on the album is 'Small Black Flowers that Grow in the Sky'. Though not normally my taste, I think it's one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
The album was released at the height of Britpop (!) and is still considered a commercial and critical success.

Arcade Fire- Neon Bible (2007)

image.png

Nominated by: blade1889

Neon Bible is the second album released by Canadian indie-rock band Arcade Fire. The album gained heavy criticism success and awards. It was claimed by many to bring indie rock back to the public. Songs were believed to have been inspired by the war-torn world of the early and mid-00s.

Arcade Fire are known for their loud and sometimes boisterous instrumentation and this album is no different; a powerful group of indie rock ballads that tell a story, if you listen enough.

Sorry to blade but I really don't know much about Arcade Fire on this one.

The Stone Roses- The Stone Roses (1989)

image.jpeg

Nominated by: This Charming Mike, les.gtfc, Techno Natch)

The Stone Roses self-titled debut album had the kind of success that is unheard of from a debuting band. The release of the album was said by many to be a pioneer of the 'Madchester' scene (ughhhhh). The psychedelic indie noise they created, along with Happy Mondays, influenced a number of major UK bands such as Oasis ( ), Blur and Ocean Colour Scene.

The album itself contains many a hit, such as 'Waterfall', 'She Bangs the Drums' and 'I Wanna Be Adored' (my favourite). 'Fools Gold' is a definitive song that introduced a new dance genre to the public via TOTP.

It was a very short-lived success, as the disbanded after their second album, which many regarded as underwhelming. Ian Brown had a relatively successful solo career while Squire, Mani and Reni had hits with The Seahorses, Primal Scream and The Rub (????) respectively.

Fools Gold wasn't on the original release of the album. It was only added later on a number of re-releases of the album.

All came too late for this to be anything other than an intellectual exercise for me. Stone Roses struck an occasional chord but on balance I would have abstained.

I'll give it another play today.
