The Beatles- Sgt Pepper (1967)

image.jpeg

Nominated by: Cheese and Biscuits, PaulHaddock

Arguably the biggest album from the biggest band ever, Sgt Pepper was released to huge critical acclaim, staying at the top of the albums chart for 27 weeks. It showed the Beatles' move away from their earlier pop and blues; it marked the beginnings of the concept album. It drew ideas from early psychedelia provided the basis for operatic and prog rock.

The title track and 'When I'm Sixty-Four' perfectly showcase the new direction, with the added use of varied, orchestral instrumentation. 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' also implies heavily of the increased drug use that influenced the songs.

Finally, 'A Day in the Life' is my favourite song off the album. This roller coaster of a song contains several great sections sandwiching the mental crescendos.

Madness- One Step Beyond (1979)

image.jpeg

Nominated by: Dave

Madness' debut album was released in the late 70s when a new wave of ska came to prominence in the UK, aided by The Specials. It incorporated early Jamaican ska with punk and thus became popular in UK culture at the time.

Their first single 'The Prince' was a homage to the early ska icon, Prince Buster. It gained success from a showing on TOTP and gave them the chance to record their album properly. The album itself stayed in the charts for over a year, 78 weeks to be exact.

Madness have consisted of the 7 same members throughout their entire career.

The Verve- Urban Hymns (1997)

image.png

Nominated by: TomPNE94

The Verve released this album in the late 90s which would go on to be considered a modern indie classic. Their third album, it's the songs off this album that people have said set Richard Ashcroft apart from other songwriters.

'Bittersweet Symphony' is definitely the band's most well-known work; it was a major hit both sides of the Atlantic and is now the unofficial England song *sniff*. Due to contracting and sampling issues, Ashcroft gets zilch from plays and sales of this record. Ouch.
'Lucky Man' and 'The Drugs Don't Work' were also hits from the album, I guess becoming those sort of songs that everyone LOVES to sing along to.

Let's go with Lucky Man; we've heard the other two enough.

Gil Scott-Heron- The Revolution Will Not Be Televised (1974)

image.jpeg

Nominated by: eightiesrobin

This compilation album, which shares its name with his earlier single, was groundbreaking in several respects. Scott-Heron was a pioneer of hip hop, heavily linked to his style of spoken word songs. Many of his lyrics were politically charged, confronting issues like race, gender and the political world in general.

Though his work is regarded as early hip hop, the majority of his music runs along the lines of jazz, soul and funk.

Can only apologise to eighties on this one. Would've loved to have written loads more as the stuff I read and listened to was brilliant and intriguing and I'll definitely be backing this album. However, the general comments and descriptions were repetitive and not all that helpful! Brilliant songs though.

Has to be The Beatles however A Day in the Life is one of my least favourite Beatles songs. Lovely Rita, Within You Without You, With a Little Help from my Friends and When I'm Sixty-Four are much better.

The Verve is the only one that is not on the shelves - but it will be soon. Madness and Beatles offerings are absoloute classics and GSH has so much going on - "The Last Holiday: A Memoir" is a great read.

Has to be Beatles I guess but Madness has had more plays over the years - saw them live at the Wirrina Stadium on the first big tour, surrounded by a strange mix of kids, parents and suits.
