Bummer for Matt Preston. Left for the money, we get promoted, now without a club.

How is Ryan Sweeney still plying his trade in this league. Looked terrible in both games at the abbey this season.

Sweeney is mostly okay. Preston last season was a red card or mistake waiting to happen. I still sometimes think about that tackle he did against Cambridge at home. It stands out as one of the worst pieces of play I've ever seen from a Mansfield player.

Oh it was a red card with a red card put on top, it was ridiculous.

It was also the game that dempster lost the fans, losing to Cambridge in the first place was a major surprise (not in the context of this season but given where we had been the few seasons before) but 4-0!

The tackle is in that link about 1 minute in

That was the night Dempster had to be sacked to save our season! Preston has been a liability this season.

I wonder what those teams potentially in the play offs will do? How long can you hang on with players not sure whether they're going to be employed beyond the end of next month? And can those clubs afford to bring their squads out of furlough for a 1 in 4 chance of promotion with zero gate receipts?

Wow. That was some tackle. Who was your no 27 who fluffed a couple of chances?

Think you’re referring to CJ Hamilton.

Like most last season he didn’t do very well, player of great skill in fairness, if the manager can get him to come good (And fit) again this season we’ll be halfway there

Khan is probably someone we would look at as he's been here before and assistant manager Peter Atherton will also likely know all about him with his Sheffield connections.
I believe we tried to get Andy Cook off you on loan this last season before he went to Tranmere so we might keep an eye on him too - even though he's still on contract with you - again he's been here 4 times before (twice on loan and we signed him twice) and got 47 goals in 87 matches during his last spell.

Wouldn't surprise me if we let him go for a small fee, maybe even fuck all. He's never going to fit in to the type of style Coughlan will demand of him. Another player same as Khan, Davies, Angol that we've spunked 6 figures on in the last 3/4 years who have barely kicked a ball for us.

Don't think any player this season can come out of it with any credit, Bar maybe Sweeney but still the defence has been shite this season.

Really hope GC is the right man for us but as yet other than looking a little fitter I didn't see anything to make me excited about next season. That said with how much of a mess Dempster left us in fitness wise it was always going to be a struggle to get us moving up the table this season. Problem is now we'll be signing 10 or so players this Summer mostly on 2 year deals so I hope he gets it right and we aren't sat 14th come the half way point

I thought Maynards and roses seasons were passable with the service they received, though he should have reacted better given his experience I understand where Maynard was coming from with his strips to a degree

As for since GC I think there was only so much he could have done with what we had and he achieved his main objective of making sure we were safe.

Though I clearly had little time for him I could see what he was wanting through macca - someone in midfield with plenty of effort and energy - If we can get the same across the board - with the suitable desire and skill - that’ll be closer to what he’ll want and what he had at Bristol rovers.

So, with Flitcroft, Dumpster and now Coughlan in charge of underperforming squads - just what is the problem?

Coughlan hasn’t been in charge of an under performing squad

I think Coughlan will be a good manager for us if he gets enough time. He's been my favourite out of Evans, Flitcroft and Dempster. He seems to know what he wants on the playing side while being fairly likeable but not taking any nonsense. It will take time for him to rebuild the squad though. I'm more content at this stage than I was with any of the others.

It’s a mixture of things.

A lot of them were there from the time of Evans when players were bought in on his conveyor belt system of where if you get enough players in eventually a few of them will be good enough - his transfer skills were shocking, unfortunately most of those who didn’t perform were his players who were on big wages who did duck all.

Coughlan saw straight through this has basically been wanting to clean it out from the earliest chance - which is now.

I sensed that Cocko was honing in on attitude and not just ability. Hence, why I suspect Pierce is not being offered a contract.

I expect something on salary caps to be mentioned when the L1 clubs (and I believe L2 clubs as well) reconvene tomorrow. Robbie Cowling of Colchester hinted they'll definitely be coming in that statement yesterday.

There’s already supposed to be something in place anyway, but clubs just get round that by sponsoring the ground (our chairman included)

Presume you mean Preston? Sweeney didn't play at your place for us this season.

Cowling was potentially suggesting something that, reading between the lines, sounded very much like a hard cap in this statement. And I think a hard cap would be voted in by many in Leagues 1 and 2 given the state of the losses.

SCMP worked for many years until clubs starting overspending ridiculous sums of money. Cowling also says the solidarity payments are to blame for this as clubs immediately throw that money on bigger squads and increased wages for players. He also holds his hand and says they've been complicit because they felt a need to keep their best players and had to pay over the odds just to keep them.

His attitude seemed to improve once he was transfer listed by Coughlan though. I don't recall Pearce's attitude ever being questioned at Mansfield except immediately after he was managed by Dempster. As a senior pro and leader in the dressing room, I wonder if Pearce felt alienated due to the quality/absence of leadership.

I notice when someone who isn't in a position of power points out that something isn't done correctly (Pearce probably grumbling that the team is unfit or training isn't right or whatever), they are "lacking professionalism". When it's the manager pointing out things aren't done correctly, they are providing "robust management".

No way of knowing though obviously

This is probably the straightest red card I have seen, at least in recent years, ref didn't have to think for very long before producing it. Tackle on Wishart, who isn't very tall but was actually jumping to head the ball, about 1 minute 30 seconds in. (Followed by a bit of a goalkeeping howler!)

Lots of youth, although it is a tad too big, but that’s what happens when you get two managers in a season if you think about it.
...and if you spend some time going through your finances and decide on a sensible wage budget and then just go "FUCK IT CAROLYN MY SWEET, WE'RE DOUBLING IT AGAIN - WE CAN'T POSSIBLY FAIL THIS TIME, RIGHT?"

The main thing with the radfords is that where they have faults, their heart is in the right place and they wouldn’t see any harm come to Mansfield.

I can’t say I’m always thrilled with how they go about things and she certainly brings unwanted attention on both herself and the club it’s a damn site better than what we’ve had before and what some others in this league have.

We're set to make a decision on our out of contract players soon:

"Harry Davis, Bradley Garmston, Elliot Grandin, Jake Hessenthaler, Elliott Whitehouse, Max Wright, Harry Cardwell, Billy Clarke, Jordan Cook, Ahkeem Rose and Charles Vernam. The club can trigger a one-year option on Vernam's contract if they wish."

Taking the option up on Vernam and reneweing Billy Clarke's would be the only bits of imperative business there for me. Take or leave Davis and Garmston, both capable of doing a job in L2 but neither of excelling really. From what I've seen of Grandin, he is a complete wildcard who could rip a team to shreds one day and may as well not be on the pitch another. Too much of a luxury for right now, unfortunately. I'd release Whitehouse, hasn't really worked out here for him. We don't need him and Clifton. Cardwell and Rose get rid. Keep one of Wright or Cook. Preferably Wright.
