I'd love to see it back, either as a replacement for the Checkatrade for L1/L2 clubs or as an additional competition for step 1/2 clubs.

Thanks for sharing. As a Sutton fan it’s great to see a video of our triumph in this competition. Gutted that I missed out on this

What a fantastic post. I had no idea such a thing had existed, let alone in such a form!

We won the actual Anglo-Italian cup in 95, beating Ascoli (featuring Oliver Bierhoff) 2-1 in the final at Wembley. A year earlier we lost the final 0-1 to a Gheorghe Hagi-inspired Brescia. Better times...

You beat Southend in the semi-final of one of those, can't remember which year! I've said before, genuinely one of the most gutting results while I've been a Southend fan.
Loved this competition, I note on 21st September there'll be a piece about the years when the 2nd tier in England played the 2nd tier in Italy. I'd love to know what Garbiel Batistuta thought when Southend United rocked up in Florence.

Nobody can take away those back to back Anglo Italian Wembley visits away from me. Great times, remember listening to BBC Radio Nottingham for commentary on an away match in somewhere like Ancona on a Tuesday night. Surreal and awesome

This competition gives Notts County the distinction of being the last Nottingham team to win a European trophy.

The format was really weird. We played a couple of matches in Italy (and hosted a couple of Italian clubs), but at one point also knocked out Forest with a draw at the City Ground (I think that might have been the qualifying stage). My dad went over for matches with Brescia in 1993/94 and Atalanta in 1994/95. I've heard some very hairy stories about those away trips. :woot:

It was the 1994 competition that Notts beat Southend in the semi final, on penalties.

It was a weird format, you had a load of qualifying groups, just Italy and England and then a 2nd group stage mixing English and Italian teams. The 1994 tournament was the only one Southend won games in, a woeful record in the other 3 tournaments played in.
The 2nd group stage saw a club from England and Italy qualify from the group, so even though Southend finished 4th in the table, as the highest placed English team they qualified for the semis!

Was also a competition where qualifying from groups was decided by the toss of a coin if clubs finished level on points.

The whole thing needs to be bought back, scrap the EFL Trophy nonsense and lets have a cross continent tournament for clubs barely noticed outside their own postcode.

Fiorentina v Southend here is one of the most unlikely competitive match ups in the history of European football.

Notts v Brescia 1994 Final and there's the final.

I was at the penalty shoot out - was a big pitch invasion at the end IIRC.

We took 500 to Brescia as it was our first ever ‘competitive’ European game! Took over a few bars, which the locals didn’t take too kindly too. Then coaches got bricked by ultras after the game and those travelling on them faced a freezing journey home over the Alps...
