Two things really changed today's game. O'Brien and Turner going off. We have little quality. Those two going off meant we had two full backs alongside Rose in central midfield. Basically a team with little quality had even less quality

Felt sorry for Dunn, young players have to learn but he may as well have been thrown under the red arrow. We need more midfielders because of we are playing 3 in the middle, we don't have replacements.

I don't know what Crawford has done but he should at least be in contention

Sacking Ardley isnt right thing. We aren't good right now and will struggle this season, but sacking another manager for one who would inherit this squad that has just been assembled would be ridiculous.

True, but what does ardley know about non-league? Going down from league 1 to league 2 isn’t the same as going down fr league 2 to the conference at all.

At least he should (maybe he does) get an assistant in who understands the workings of things

i don't think the League / non League thing is the problem, it's the complete lack of a meaningful pre season. Five of the starting line up only signed last week.
We're desperate for a no9 we just can't hold the ball up and it makes us look shapeless and toothless.

The league/ non league thing is a problem, you just haven't seen the worst of it yet. You really need to hire a manager who knows the league and has a solid track record otherwise you'll be here forever.

And some seem to be like that, then you operate as if you’re a league club when you then don’t get central funding etc etc etc, it probably took us 2 seasons to work out what the fuck was going on, and we very nearly went out of business.

If county and ardley operate on the assumption they’ll just work the way out of things they’ll more likely to be in the conference north than league 2 - it’s fucking brutal.

I still believe that promotion from the conference is the hardest out of the top 5 divisions

Exactly the mistakes we've been making. We were clueless when we first got here, almost went bust, hired terrible managers, signed some crap players. Culture of the club was/is rotten. There's been a lot of off field stuff and not sure Hignett is the right man for the job but him and the owner have finally tried to address the issues within the club and sign the right kind of players so we can move forward. It's now our 3rd season here. There's only just signs now that it is starting to change. That's 2 years/3 seasons, and we've only just started. Wasted a lot of time and parachute payments to finish 16th and 15th in the first two seasons.

Clubs that go down need to hit the ground running and everyone knows how tough it is down here and how you have to cut the cloth accordingly but every time they just sit on their arses and say 'oh we're 'insert random ex EFL club', it'll be fine'. And it never is.

Yeah, it’s always seemed fairly obvious to me that the first thing a relegated to the conference team should do is get a manager who’s well acquainted with the conference. Assuming that there’s little reason to keep their old one, which obviously there usually isn’t.

Without wishing to go through all the stats(which our new owners should be doing right now) teams that do well here usually do it with managers experienced in non league.

No logical reason why we should keep Ardley. I imagine even he would struggle to come up with one. The fact that we’ve sacked a lot of rubbish managers lately isn’t a logical reason to keep the latest one.

You don’t “have” to have a manager experienced in non league but ultimately you’re getting a manager with league experience who has no clue of any players, it’s bizarre - it’s a completely different animal.

You’ve not even encountered the complete and utter farce that is the FA trophy (basically the LDV trophy only with a lot shitter teams played on Saturdays with replays)

We have no creativity, we can't defend and have no-one to score the goals.

Other than that, we're fine.

We're going to piss this tinpot league

In all fairness to us Notts fans I don't think any of us have been confident of doing well or thinking we don't belong here after last season.
The summer has been so bad that just starting on zero points and having new owners is a bonus for most of us.
Still expect us to finish lower mid table but I'm not complacent, we're piss poor, with some gaping holes where a squad should be.

You should let him go, and nothing against ardley, we got Paul cox as manager from Ilkeston of all places who had a great track record with them and was un-fancied against league managers but he knew exactly what was needed and what he needed to take it.

Will probably sound bollocks now, but it’s only when you admit you’re non-league that rehabilitation can commence - the conference is absolute hell - it’s not a “league 3” at all - of course sides can go straight back up - but it’s rare.
We got paul cox from eastwood ,just saying like

Yep, 100% echo the sentiments from other posters. In our first stint at this level we got in Buckle who had been playing here for a while and then coaching under Tisdale at Exeter. He knew the league and the players we would need. Horses for courses. Once we were back in the league he ditched most of them pretty sharpish.

Second time around we appointed a succession of chancers and signed over the hill EFL players on the assumption that they should be good at this lower level, spectacular failure. It's the same mistake so many relegated sides make and Notts don't appear to be any different.

The sides that have bounced back quickly from this level in recent years have been Cheltenham, Brizzle Rovers and Orient. All of them had managers with experience of success in non-league football.

Problem with league players down here is they underestimate how physical it is, especially with the god awful refs. Plus I'm sure there is an ego issue with dropping to non league to.

Askey was always saying he wanted the right attitude of any player who signed for us. That attitude and work ethic got us promoted with a pretty average team.

I think it is, maybe not in the immediate future but will be soon.

If you look at the managers who've escaped got promoted, they're all proven at non-league level as managers and/or players - Still, Cox, Cowley, Edinburgh, Mellon, Hurst, Askey, Clarke, Evans, Mills, Johnson, Cooper etc etc. They'll be the odd anomaly in there, Salford being one, but we all know why.

We have actually signed a creative midfielder Regan Booty which is what we needed. Just a target man or very quick striker now.

The last thing we needed was another bloody midfielder. We’ve got three creative midfielders putting out the cones at training or something because they committed the crime of not having been signed by Neal Ardley.

To be fair Jacob, I think you're right on Crawford - he deserves a chance but Patching doesn't seem to add anything at all.

Nah Patching has shown nothing and I’d shift him if we can, but I think Kellett (when fit anyway) and Crawford have shown enough to suggest that they deserve to be involved. The latter particularly considering how young he is, and Kellett because we don’t have a left footed attacking midfielder at the club.

Reading between the lines Patching is on a fair wedge. Wasn't he Michael Owens recommendation via Fletch?

I see Neil Ardley is adopting the ‘spray and pray’ technique.

I hope it works but I have my doubts!

Ardley is a complete disaster in every sense of the word. I don’t think he’s shown competence in a single facet of football management since arriving.

Mike Basset and his famous four four fucking two.

Delighted for Sam Osborne to get a full start too. Hopefully we can go forward from here

If an away win at 10 man Harrogate after them missing a penalty doesn’t kick start the season, nothing will.

That was a nervy second half, we never looked like we had an extra man.
We're due a bit of luck and then missing a penalty was it. They aren't great but they are working hard for each other and if we can string a couple of wins together we may get a bit of confidence from somewhere.

Patching gone by mutual consent. Don't think it will be long before the others do too

It's been a humbling fall from grace for Patching. Man City youth team captain to released from non league Notts in a year flat. Brutal.
Truth is he never showed anything to suggest he was going to make it.

Patching never looked like he fancied the physical side of the game in the little I saw him play. Football cliche alert but it’s a mans game and you can be the biggest baller going but if you can’t take the physical side, it’s not going to end well for you
