On this forum site there has been much discussion that League 1 is broken down between the top teams and the rest.
There are four teams that have previously won the league title: - Derby, Ipswich, Portsmouth & Sheff Wednesday.
Plus seven teams who have won the FA Cup: - Barnsley, Bolton, Charlton, Derby, Ipswich, Portsmouth & Sheff Wednesday.
Would those four teams who have won both be considered the BIG BEASTS of our league?

FGR are not only new boys to this league but also the most recent club admitted to the EFL at this level.
Therefore it will be a 1st ever meeting between FGR and five other teams: Barnsley, Ipswich, Peterboro, Portsmouth, Sheff Wednesday.
Of the rest FGR only met Charlton & Derby in Cup competitions.
The list of games played & results (below) includes games in Conference.
You'll see that Cambridge are FGR's most frequent opponents.

Absolutely! Mainly because that would royally piss off the Bolton fans on here :fl:

FA Vase is where it's at for the historical kudos, really.
Yep, I omitted other Cup Trophies other than FA & League Cup otherwise I'd be adding Cup wins such as: -
  • Leamington Hospital Cup
  • Midland Floodlit Cup
  • Gloucestershire Senior Cup
  • Gloucestershire Senior Amateur North Challenge Cup
etc etc

Fuming over here. Hope Forest Green go straight back down
Hang on.
FGR will probably be one the bookies favourites to go straight back down but why are you fuming at FGR when it was a Pompey fan who made remark.
BTW I believe that both Pompey & Bolton are traditional BIG BEASTS in this division and both deserve to do well.

Panic over. Sorry your original post seemed to imply you didn’t realise Bolton Wanderers are the biggest and most prestigious team in this division by quite some distance.

In all seriousness I hope you guys do well next season. I have a soft spot for FGR having grown up just down the road.

Close season and no football so idling away time by checking out stats.
I’ve copied average & maximum attendances from FootballWebPages
https://www.footballwebpages.co.uk/league-one/attendances
and maximum away support from Barrie Owl’s post. (Thanks Barrie)

It is worrying that League 2 Champions FGR has the lowest average support despite topping table for entire season.
What is doubly worrying is that FGR’s maximum attendance is lower than local rival Cheltenham Town’s average. Cheltenham have been gloating about that for years so expect same again this season.

When did we win the conference title?

I don't think our away end holds 1,200 anymore either.

FGR also didn't top the table for the entire season last season.

I'll come back tomorrow to pick up on more errors.

Yes you’re right Exeter were Conference finalists. Too late to amend (edit closed) but you are on record as correcting record.

FGR were top of table for entire season with exception of week 1 (win but less than two others), week 6 (draw) & week 45 (loss). I’ll accept that I should have inserted the word ‘virtually’ .

I’m very happy for you to correct away end numbers; I’m only copying them 2nd hand.

BTW probably many more errors to discover. I wrote up sheets at night after coming home from pub. But it gives us both something to do in the close season. Enjoy.

Ahem, I think I see from that matrix, that we are your most frequent opponents - 25 in the league and 1 in the cup. Though not sure about the accuracy of your stats here because we can't have played an odd number of matches in the league. The same applies for Plymouth, Cheltenham and Cambridge.
Actually, just checked and we seem to have played each other only 12 times in L2 and National league and once in the cup, so check where you're getting your data from.

Yeah.

The table suggests 25 meetings. I agree if you exclude the Trophy - which we don't because we won it.

Our first game in the Conference was at the Old Lawn and it was a bit of a shock to the system. Thanks to the efforts of a certain Colin Peake and a relegation reprieve, we played FGR twice every season that we were in that pit of despond - 18 games. We also played them 7 times in L2 (only once in 2019/20 thanks to covid - perhaps they dodged playing Morecambe twice as well). I think we also beat them in the FA Trophy when we were in the Conference but I don't remember playing them in the FA Cup.

That first meeting with FGR seems so far away now. It was only 2005 (at least I don't think we played them competitively before that?) but it was our first match in the Conference, played out in front of 550 Cambridge fans and 551 FGR supporters.

We lost 1-0 to a Scott Rendell goal and our fans smashed up their toilets. I may be misremembering but did Jim Harvey have a heart attack before/after that match?

Providing the takeover goes ahead, along with no further sanctions, I do think our attendance will be improved on last season.

We went into last season with the ticket office closed, with no possibility to buy season tickets and only existing season tickets that hadn’t been claimed for refund and rolled into the following year were entitled to a free ticket for the game. As a 19/20 season ticket holder I was able to get a discounted rate on mine a couple of days before - buying online only. Most of the bars were closed within the ground, the amenities around the ground were completely closed. It was one of the strangest experiences I’ve ever had as a Derby fan, really the writing was on the wall then, although covid was blamed as the excuse for not selling season tickets. It was the lowest attendance ever for a league game at Pride Park.

The aftermath of COVID, heavy point deductions, sanctions and discontent around the club meant it was our lowest average attendance for a complete season since we moved from the baseball ground. League One does impact interest, every club usually has a significant drop off, but I’d imagine the situation around ourselves means the opposite. I’d imagine we get close to 25k on average next season, with just shy of 20k season ticket holders.

Be good to play Derby again for the first time since the season we sold Van Der Laan to yourselves. I’d imagine same as most clubs your attendances will go up if the team is winning. End of the day people won’t really care what division it is but if they are doing well then expect you’ll sell out a few times.

I've been to the Baseball ground but never been to Pride Park. It's a game I'm looking forward to as I'd imagine we'll take 2-3k there.

Feels like ages since we last played Ipswich. I think Kieron Dyer was playing for them!

Absolutely. A chaos free season would go a long way for a lot of Derby fans, chuck a dozen or more new grounds to get to and it feels like a rebirth, obviously a lot could impact us off the field until it’s resolved but until then no reason not to be optimistic.

14 potential first trips to new grounds for myself next season, whereas there would be none in the championship as I’ve been to them all at least once.

"I haven't a clue about that, I didn't even know Jim Harvey had a heart attack."

Fuck me why not include your egg and spoon race 2nd place.

Did the parents down the length of the race track influence your defeat

Yeah that’s the best way to approach it just embrace the experience and I don’t think you’ll go far wrong. Seen us drop to L2 twice while supporting Vale and first time to be honest we went in with completely the wrong attitude of “we shouldn’t be here” etc and promptly got our arses smacked week after week.

I don’t know too much about what sort of team Derby will have but keeping Rooney around after the job he did last season is a good start. Hopefully things work out well with the takeover though. We know as well as any club what being in administration and having terrible owners are like.

I cannot find any reference to any EFL team winning egg and spoon race.
However I did double check Sheff Wed honour list and impressive it is I'll admit.

Always had a soft spot for Wednesday since 1966 when 2-0 ahead in FA Cup Final against Everton, and told my mum 'that's it. Wednesday have won Cup' only for Everton to score three goals (two by Mike Trebilcock who nobody had ever previously heard of and who disappeared into obscurity after match).
My mum disagreed and had a big smirk on her face on final whistle, having been proven right.

I think until this season Wednesday were only team to be losing finalists in same season for FA Cup & League Cup when Chelsea did same.

Your club historian doesn't remember Jim Harvey having a heart attack? That genuinely surprises me.

He suffered the attack whilst managing Morecambe, just before they played Cambridge (as per huddsmoose memory), and then Morecambe sacked him on his return following a layoff. FGR appointed him a year after the attack and it was a big story when FGR next played Morecambe because of a fall out between Harvey and Sammy McIlroy (who took over whilst Harvey was recuperating).
