Away from the bickering over who is the biggest club...

Which is the biggest fixture in league one next season??

I mean this in terms of history or interest it will generate compared to the average run of the mill fixture.

There are undoubtedly less 'big' fixtures this season now there is no Sheffield United or Bolton.. with the Oxford v Swindon fixture also missing this year.

A few that that stick out for me are:

Rotherham vs Doncaster
Portsmouth vs Plymouth
Northampton vs Peterborough
Wigan vs Blackburn

Thoughts/Discussion?

There may be some more obscure ones that I've missed.

Think only one with some genuine animosity is us against Donny.

Don't know how likes of Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Wigan and Blackburn feel about each other.

We haven't played Doncaster many times since i started watching the millers back in the year 2000 but the times i did see us play them home and away it's always been a bit feisty on and off the field and it's 2 clubs who generally don't like each other at all. Also coming from Mexborough which is part of Doncaster i know how important this fixture is.

Seriously is anyone looking forward to a 'big' fixture this year that doesn't involve their side? I'm not even looking forward to half our fixtures.

Agreed, no animosity whatsoever between Rovers and Wigan fans, just another local game to both. Some Oldham fans got excited when we were last down here and the media tried to stir up the game with the "El Latico" tag but there was certainly no rivalry from our side. Seems to be a distinct lack of hatred between teams in L1 this season. I'd say the biggest game is Wimbledon vs Milton Keynes.

No particular order...

Any fixtures involving any two of:

Blackburn
Wigan
Portsmouth
Bradford
Charlton

Also..

AFC Wimbledon vs MK Dons

Oldham fans would probably try and start a rivalry with their own u21's side. They are desperate for a rival it will be Blackburn this time they try I bet.

Our biggest game is against Donny but their isn't that much animosity between us so it's just a little more than a run of the mill fixture. I have no problems with Donny. I am personally looking forward to our games against Blackburn the most

Dull set of 24 teams with nothing to look forward to anywhere, really.

I like going to Pompey and Plymouth can get a bit rowdy. Oxford is always a good laugh too.
Looking forward to the season :)

From a Portsmouth perspective, our most interesting fixtures will be Plymouth (a rivalry has developed over the last few years) and Wigan (the Paul Cook factor) but otherwise the only other fixture I'd bother watching in this division that didn't involve or influence Pompey is MK Dons vs AFC Wimbledon.

You say that as if Bradford haven't spent the last 15 years in the bottom two leagues.

I think you're looking for an angle to criticise when there isn't one. It's not saying we're 'massive' or above it all (because obviously we're not).

Note the poster said 24 teams, so is including us in the comment - and they're right.

I'm sure most L1 clubs' fans have looked at their fixture list for this season and gone "meh", bar the odd local/obvious rivalry per other posts i.e. Donny v Rotherham.

Obviously any game involving us is most important to us, but last year there were two club that I looked out for, Sheffield United and Bolton. Both have now departed so there all on a par for me this season.

If I had to pick the most meaningful game I'd say MK Dons v Wimbledon or Donny v Rotherham.

I think that the rivarly between us and Pompey is largely based on respect, and the fact that the past few games have been good. I don't think we have any that I consider spicy. The two that stand out for me are Donny/Rotherham and Wimbledon/MK.

This does not necessarily mean these two are the biggest (I reserve that for when first plays second) but they are the eye-catching ones.

:D

You're not wrong, we only stopped singing Bastard Rovers regularly a few years ago!

It's not a big game per sé, but Oldham vs Rochdale is a growing rivalry, despite furious protestations from both sides that we don't care about each other. The spiciness is building, I can feel it, and it will continue to build as long as we keep playing each other every season.

Ahaha I'm gunna bite. I'd say Rochdale are the team we dislike the most in the division. I find a lot of Rochdale fans to have a holier than thou attitude. I work in Heywood so know quite a few bury fans yet I can't really say I give a shite about bury and they would probably say the same. The Wigan thing is more to do with the older fans going on that we are the original latics and they copied our tag. Blackburn rivalry was before I was born,

As an Aston Villa fan and therefore an impartial I'd have to say Blackburn vs either Pompey or Wigan

It has to be Blackburn Rovers versus Portsmouth.
on a side note -- Wigan are a small club playing in a large ground.

Averaged more than you last time we were down here. Had more home fans in the ground on the last day than the Memorial Stadium's full capacity. Considering you're not even the biggest football club in your own city I'd keep quiet.

Have I missed something here? Why on Earth would Blackburn vs Portsmouth be a big game, anywhere?

There are very little big games in this league next season, if any. In terms of neutral interest, getting people talking and media interest it's MK Dons vs Wimbledon. Rightly or wrongly.

Peterborough vs Scunthorpe. Nothing sets the pulse racing like it and if it's on Sky will generate bigger viewing figures than the champions league final.
