Centenarian fans

They've been celebrating the birthday of our oldest known fan at Brunton Park today, and it got me thinking about these extremely long-lived fans. I was amazed to hear that he can still remember attending our first ever football league home game in 1928, there can't be that many fans of clubs here (the likes of FGR and Wycombe aside) who can remember a time when the FL hadn't yet been going fifty years and clubs we now think of as mainstays of league football first joining.

Not quite Shoddy, a 60's teen from the days when Barrow RLFC and Barrow AFC were in their pomp. I was taken back to my early days and pulled out some old programmes this week, triggered by a thread on the Barrow forum. Interesting names in the Swindon, Watford, Fulham and Luton programmes from those days

Even my dad, who passed last year, didn't get back that far. His memories were rugby and all post-war, in particular the Hadwin's charabanc from Ulverston to Odsal in 1954 for the Challenge Cup replay.

We had a fella called Monty who unfortunately died last year so we named the bar for home fans Monty's in his honour.

I can't remember the games I been to this season let alone the first game I went to.

All I remember about my first game is that when youre 4'0” high, the view from the back of the cowshed is fucking shite.
