The champagne is on ice. Colchester have done their bit. They can sit back, relax and watch on as Carlisle take on Cambridge in the season finale.

Carlisle still have a mathematical chance of claiming the title, but it would take a big win and upturn in form to claw back the goal difference. Colchester know it's all but done, for Carlisle the big damage was done in the 4-1 capitulation at Colchester in January.

Sky sports will be at both Brunton park and Colchester. The Trophy will also be at Colchester ahead of the expected presentation following their match against Portsmouth, but a helicopter will be on standby outside the stadium just incase a swift trip up north is needed.

Current table:
1. Colchester United P4 Pts 7 GD +3
2. Carlisle United P3 Pts 4 GD -1
3. Cambridge United P3 Pts 2 GD -2

All to play for. A Cambridge win would leap frog them over Carlisle into second.

Derry has already made it clear that we can't compete with a big club like Carlisle, so we'll likely play for a 0-0.

Which would be a good ploy if we had a solid defence.

That said, rumour has it Brad Halliday is back. He might decide that he's had enough of aimless long punts towards a teenage donkey and beat Carlisle on his own.

Fair to say I've lost interest in this season.

Good thing Sky sports have taken steps to have a whirlybird on standby as it's far from decided yet. A 2-0 win for both Pompey and Carlisle, and the trophy will spend 6 months at Col and 6 months up in Cumbria.

Should win this, but the way we've performed this year it could go either way. Cambridge have little to play for and are missing a few key players, surely we have a good chance of finding some form.

Seen the highlights of the 4-4 last season, and it's nice to see such consistency in our defending this season.

We've got to go for it, two up top and attack from the start. Don't gift them any goals and don't concede in the opening 10 minutes, and we've got a chance.

2-1

Pompey have nothing to do with this. They are not in this elite league. Colchester have played all 4 of their fixtures in this league.

But even if Colchester and Carlisle do end up on the same points and the same GD then it would be decided on their head to head record, which Colchester edge.

Love Carlisle, great away day, nice early start on the train with a few beers so hopefully I will be well on the way by 3pm to not care half as much about the ensuing gobshite that we will probably be served on the pitch. As someone put on our forum our only hope is if Halliday plays and decides he's had enough of our ineptitude and just goes for it on his own. I think I'd probably be more confident at 0-0 than 1-0 up with 30 minutes to go.

2-1 Carlisle and raucous celebrations in Essex.

Still under the weather so disappointed not to be making this one.

I can see all the arguments for a likely negative approach, players not being up for it, Carlisle needing a reaction to their drift and the effects of a long trip up the M6. I can also see us scoring 3 and winning this one, especially with Halliday/Mingoia down the right and Taylor/Dunk down the left. We managed some cracking away performances in Nov/Dec, largely thanks to Uche, and I can see the basis for something similar from Berry and McDonagh against a team that defends like Carlisle.

Is that enough to begin to counter the oppressing level of collective CUFC doom & gloom that this forum has had to suffer over the last few weeks?

A steady mid-table finish in the CUFC challenge, supported by a top 10 finish on 69/70 points remains within our grasp.

Based on Derry's record for truthfulness in his Thursday sick reports, we might even see Barry Corr making his first start for over a year, following a private charter jet being made available by his sponsor for the flight from Marshall's up to Stobart's Carlisle Lake District Airport -

Derry said: “Unfortunately we’re going to be missing Barry this weekend.

“He got that slight groin problem at Barnet and we thought he’d be ready for the weekend, but he’s not and we have to run without him.

“I think when you also throw into the equation the monstrous drive up to Carlisle as well, I don’t think that’s going to do him any favours either.”

I take it this Halliday is good then?

I've honestly never heard of him which will probably come back to bite me tomorrow.

We kind of have to hope amongst hope here that we can win this, and the third CUFC can do us a favour against Pompey... and why shouldn't they? They're in jubilant mood and would love to see us promoted giving them a free run at the CUFC trophy next season. Really I think it's our last hope for a big morale boost. Even if getting back into the top three doesn't mean we finish the season there, Luton still have a game in hand, it would ease our fears of being on a downward spiral and give us more confidence going into a midweek clash with Luton, which, if all goes well, will put us out of reach of their game in hand. Hopefully, anyway, all I'm saying it it's not too massive a stretch for us to have a very different feeling about our chances come 9:30 on Tuesday.

Jesus Christ! Never in a million years did I expect this, especially after I got a text from a mate at the match who told me we were very very average in the first half. Was so sure we'd lose I even played a Joker on Oakey's predicta. Football eh?

First time in aeons that I've missed an away match and been up to catching it on the radio - works for me.

Classic Derry away performance. Classic 2017 Carlisle - clearly something is wrong off the field at this CUFC.

Strong finish remains likely but 7th looks out of reach - I can enjoy that.

Berry's mate Maris is also looking a sound signing.

Personally, I like him a lot for the simple reason he makes things happen. I've rated him from the first time I saw him play for us, and have always had him down under the 'good signings' column whenever I make up a list in my mind of our transfer dealings. Still haven't made up my mind on a couple of others though like McDonagh and O'Neil, as I like to give new signings a couple of months before writing them off completely. I didn't even criticise that Boro winger we had on loan last year who only played 45 mins but looked like he wasn't even aware he was on the pitch

Anyone who thinks I'm a pessimist, look at this. Naively optimistic!

Never in a million years would we have scored today. We are SHITE.

If this was near the start of the season we'd be going down.

We're getting worse by the week and we're sailing very close to the levels of shitness that we served up 2 seasons ago.

Cambridge didn't actually play very well, they didn't need to. Both teams were utterly woeful and toothless until the penalties. But credit to them for actually getting into our box to be in a position to get a penalty, something we aren't capable of.

Honestly can't think of words to do justice to just how shit this team is.

Absolutely no chance of top 7.

Jesus Christ, that was almost as enjoyable as that time I thought I had lost my virginity in year eight.

Keith can fuck right off...

I think Alan is correct about something not right off the field at Carlisle. Can't remember exactly what our radio commentators said at one point during the match, but I think it was something along the lines of Curle seemingly looking too passive. As in not concerned enough. I only caught the last bit of it though, as I was on the phone at the time. But, tbf, I don't know how Curle usually conducts himself on the touchline.

Just to further add to our woes, that challenge that hurt Mike Jones today has probably ended his season.

Are you having a laugh? We are only four point off 3rd place right now and there are still plenty of games left for us to finish in the top 3. We're better than 19 teams!!!

Get a grip man!!!
