Derek Asamoah's current club travel to Derek Asamoah's first club, where they now have two fields for each stand, with Asamoah himself in fine form... though it is by no means a guarantee of a starting place in Curle's line-up. The two clubs can also share some good memories of nights at Anfield, Northampton's being slightly happier... ours featuring an Asamoah goal.

Jabo won't be back for this game, despite having returned to training, a midweek fixture will come just too soon. Other than that we're awaiting news on Michael Raynes' fitness after he was taken off yesterday. If Raynes is missing for this and presumably Troy won't be starting then I can see Gillesphey coming in alongside Atkinson in defence if we persist with two centre backs, or alongside Atkinson and Miller should we go for three at the back. Either way, we could be lacking a big physical presence back there.

We travel having won three of the last four away from home in the league and will probably look to turn out another battling performance, withstanding pressure and then nicking the points in the second half. Northampton's unbeaten run was curtailed yesterday on six as they lost at Cambridge, so they'll be looking to make amends at home.

By the way Asamoah's wiki page makes for amusing reading.

Asamoah was in his most prolific season yet, almost using his own two feet saving Chester from the drop
He described the club as a "sleeping giant" and hopes to help guide the Cumbrians back towards the top of the European game.

That cufc17 is how you do a Fred title.

I was thinking along the lines of 'The Billionaire Derby', but I suppose this'll do

Northampton are a good side, so it'll be another tough game. I'd take a point right now. I think we'll revert back to 3-6-1 or perhaps 4-5-1, pack the midfield and hope for a goal on the counter.

Which goalscorer do you refer to? Jabo, Degsy or Miller... or maybe the fit-again Charlie Wyke is ready to make an impression on the scoresheet again.

*Del

He hates being called Degsy and requests that we call him Del or Derek.

Danny Grainger told me this.

I'm going to this match. 4 of us in the car. As I'll get back at God knows what hour and I'm at work the next morning, I hope it's fucking worth it.

What's your away record like HG?
Unbeaten since Stevenage away last season :2thumb:

And that includes a 2-1 win on a mild Tuesday night in Shepherds Bush. So a cold Tuesday night in Northampton should be a piece of piss.

team selection is tough here because the 3 at back has worked away, but do you keep with the 4 at back to let them get used to it.

I think if they play that 4-3-3 they need Sweeney out of it, he looked absolutely lost up front and sadly most of the balls went to him in the box.

but i';d guess Asamoah was saved for this game and will go 1 up top, am just unsure if he'll go 4 or 3 at the back.

Didn't predict an 8-0 win in the Cobblers v Camridge thread and we lost, so I think I'm to blame for the defeat.

In the same vein, think we'll win this and it'll be tight. 8-0.

If we play 4-3-3 again our front 3 for this is potentially awesome, start Asamoah on the wing instead of Sweeney and keep the rest of the team mostly the same. This is all without Ibehre still as well. Despite this, I think Curle will probably revert back to the 3-5-2 which has served us well in away games so far. As long as Gilliead starts I'm happy.

Gillespie
Miller Atkinson Raynes Troy Grainger
Dicker Hery Joyce
Gilliead Wyke

If 4-3-3:

Gillespie
Miller Atkinson Raynes Grainger
Dicker Hery Joyce
Gilliead Wyke Asamoah

1-3 win for us - optimism creeping back again.

I think we'll go back to 3 at the back. It's worked well away.

Prediction. I genuinely think we'll lose. It won't be a bad performance and i expect a really close game, but like I felt with Morecambe, Northampton are due a win against us and I think our luck in away games will run out here. A narrow 1-0 home win.

I have a feeling Gilliead won't start, same goes for Hery & Wyke

I think we'll lineup something like this...

Gillespie
Miller Raynes Atkinson
Joyce Dicker
McQueen Kennedy Sweeney Grainger
Asamoah

We didnt turn up for this fixture last season. Need to get back to winning ways, 3 points should see us into the playoffs. Confident the off the field issues will galvanise us, going for a 3-2 win.

Safe journey down for those attending from Carlisle, big respect for a fair old journey on a tuesday!

the one advantage we may have tonight is Northampton cannot at all plan to play us as we were switching everything previously but kept to a 3 at back approach and now after Saturday have added a 4 at back set-up also.

could it be 3-1-2-3 or 3-5-2 or 3-6-1 or 3-4-3 or 4-3-3 or 4-5-1.............it must test their scouting system when we come up.

add in no doubt at least 3 maybe more team changes 'regardless' of fitness/injuries and it is as much as a shock to us what team we have as to the opposition.

I have a feeling curle may stick with the 4 at back tonight, but maybe Asamoah for Wyke and Dicker in for someone......but the 3 at back with 6 midfielders has worked superbly away in both league and cup.

I reckon it'll be a narrow Northampton win too, though I think we are capable of getting at least a point.

2-1 Northampton

Looking at Northampton's fans on their forum, they seem to fear teams with pace, so this game could be tailor-made for McQueen and Asamoah

So its his 3-6-1 formation. But with miller/Grainger pushing so high up it'll be 3-4-3. Surprised he didn't try 4 at back away, but can see why he sticks with this as its working well away
