Im just musing was yesterday just a one off awful game for him or is he consistently that bad? Before i start swindon won fair and square so its not just becouse we lost .

Any ref can get a decision wrong so im not going to dwell on all the small ones he got wrong ( about 30) and just focus on 3 incidents:

First was the clear foul on miller which lead to him being injured an awful decision it was a clear free kick and his ineptness lead to a professional player being hurt .

Secondly there was a clear swindon free kick around the 70 minute mark the ref was 5 yards away , saw it, raised his whistle, looked at the crowd and shat himself and put the whistle away, he clearly bottled it! There was no advantage to swindon as monthe cleared... i can accept refs being inept however not making a decision becouse he was scared if being screamed at by the home support is not on .

Finally there was the incident when buxton went to ground in the last minute. I was 60 yards away in the town paddock so im clueless as to whether it was a foul or a dive. This is simple its a free kick or a second yellow for diving and bye bye adam , off ya go. But other then waive his arms around like an angry italian joyce did nothing.

Am i missing something here? Was he as bad as i think or am i getting this wrong?

Referees are inconsistent at this level but you win some lose some, we had four apology letters in four games early in the season, notably the penalty we didn’t get at Tranmere in injury time which was the most obvious you’ll ever see when Quigley was completely taken out (and a handball seconds before) and had that same referee yesterday and didn’t think he was too bad. The week later and the Newport penalty incident when Butler punched the ball off Popes forehead as he was about to get a header in from six yards.

That said i can’t remember many we benefited from, possibly a penalty after Brown caught Frecklington but that wouldn’t have changed the game as we lost 6-2! And the Red Card for FGR was possibly only a yellow but he had been booked anyway so the outcome would of been a red regardless.

We had him in our home game against Macc. Can't really remember any key refereeing decisions though we were warned about him beforehand. Trevor Kettle is one that comes to mind.

On the flipside, I thought yesterday's referee against Cheltenham was quite decent, Carl Boyeson it was, though you could say it was an easy game for him to ref, not many fouls flying around. His linesman gave us a couple of corners where the ball was clearly still in play, but neither official had a clear view on that. He was pretty vocal and seemed to have the respect of the players, and until (if) we get things like goal-line technology and VAR down here, there's not really much more you can ask of a ref. Also, the ball hit him three times, which is the most I think I've ever seen the ball strike the ref in one game.

I seem to remember the ref we had against Colchester last month being pretty decent in the same sort of way, but I'm not sure if I'm remembering the right ref. Eddie Ilderton that was.

How was the injury the ref's fault though? If he had given the free kick it wouldn't have changed the fact the foul happened.

He did his hamstring trying to stay on his feet and get away from the defender when he realised the ref was not going to give anything

Mr Joyce probably the most inconsistent referee I’ve seen this season. Gave Swindon free-kicks for the most minuscule contact, yet nothing for the challenges on Miller. The Buxton ‘dive’ was in front of me, Adam ran into the Swindon player, neither dive nor foul in my view, but on Mr Joyce’s previous should have been a free-kick to Rovers. Very harsh yellow card to the Swindon goalie, after the lad had gone to collect the ball from behind the net and didn’t immediately take the goal-kick. One of the poorer referees in the middle for Tranmere.

Dean Whitestone, who did Rovers v Vale mentioned, used to be a safe pair of hands, but wasn’t at his best in that game. Though sharing refereeing duties with Ricky Miller would do my head in too :)

Seen Mr Boyeson twice, fairly unimpressive. The best to date was Ben Toner in our home opener v Cheltenham, who just got on with it and didn’t seek attention.

Slightly off topic i guess but the ref who sent the Wolves manger off yesterday for celebrating the last minute goal, was the same ref who let Klopp run to the centre circle do a few back flips and press ups and high fives against Everton and walked off scot free.

At every level the inconsistency is criminal.
League 2 standard is scandalous, either unfit or a midget suffering from little man syndrome

Worst referee we’ve had in years was actually a Premier League referee last season... Mike Jones in our crucial game end of last season against Chesterfield! Literally almost cost us our league status he was that bad!

2nd minute Sid Nelson jumps up and swings an elbow almost taking Luke Hannants head off... only gets a yellow... Vale take the lead then Pugh is sent off rightly but should be 10 v 10.

Then their midfielder air kicks taking a shot with no one within 3 or 4 yards and he gives a free kick that they score an equaliser from!

Luckily we won late on or we’d have gone down come the end of the season!

Klopp got fined I think and the ref probably got told off and reminded of the rules he is supposed to apply in situations ..

Must admit though it was all quite petty when you think of the stuff refs miss and don't give correct decisions for .

We had him who Joey Barton has just been charged for making comments about. How he’s fit enough to referee I don’t know, Like watching me try to waddle around during 6 a side!

I was talking about that yesterday. If Klopp didn’t get sent off nor should he.

We had boyeson in our loss to Yeovil last week - whereas the defeat was deserved he was absolutely terrible. Yeovil time wasting was unbeliable - every side does it - but it just wasn’t punished and they got away with it.

He also failed to give a blatant penalty to them about 10 minutes or so, and missed some shocking challenges from both sides.

Lower league refs are just like the players they're reffing - too inconsistent on a match by match basis. Some of you reckon Trevor Kettle is comfortably the worst ref down here but I don't know about that as he's got loads of other to keep him company.

IMO, one ref that is certainly poorer than Kettle is Charles Breakspear.

I thought I'd add luke Joyce is terrible too

Thought it was about Joycey at first!

Played well yesterday just doesn’t suit the hoofball style to Pope, looked far better in a team that had to play on the deck yesterday.

Don’t talk to us about about Ross Joyce. Little twat cost us promotion 12 months before we got it. Could have actually ruined a whole football club by his incompetence.

1-0 up in play off final against Bristol rovers and Ollie Palmer puts shot towards goal only for keeper to blatantly hand ball it about 5 yards outside area. Joyce saw it and gave keeper yellow card. Actually told Palmer he gave him a yellow because he didn’t want to spoil the game.

Should not have been allow to ref another game from that pojnt on.

The most consistant referee in this league is without doubt the aforementioned Carl Boyeson. We have had him twice this season and he was appalling both times. In fact I remember him before our demise into the VNL and he was equally shocking on every occasion we had him then. He seems to think that time wasting is a totally acceptable part of the game and always has. The fact that he turns round and grins like the Cheshire Cat when fans have a go at him makes him even more of a personal hate figure than his decision making does. To be honest, and I said this to my mates at the time, when we got to Gresty Road and saw his name on the programme I felt like getting back in the car and going straight home rather than watch yet another turgid, quite possibly bias, display by that buffoon.

Having said all that Mr. Joyce on Saturday had quite possibly the worst single game I have ever seen from a referee in all the time I have been going to football. The fact he gave 3 free kicks against James Norwood for simply using his body to turn a defender, something any decent forward does time and time, game after game, and then warned him about it summed the guy up. The Miller incident which was right in front of me was incredible. He was fouled at least two , possibly three, times and Joyce appeared to wave play on because Miller got a shot away whilst being pushed to the ground inside the penalty area.

In fairness, Howard Webb did the same thing in a World Cup Final. Spain won in the end though.

Didn't Disley get away with one in a PO Final early doors? Or have I made that up? I'm sure he went in two footed on the halfway line or something.

I honestly can’t remember that happening although I might have just not seen it from the stands. Ross Joyce after that incident actually had a really good game but by not sending off the Rovers keeper the damage had already been gone. Matt Taylor rounded McKeown and went down to try and get him sent off instead of putting the ball into the empty net and Joyce saw it and correctly booked him for diving and at the time from my angle even I thought it was a red and a penalty so he did well there, and Magnay just before half time was already on a yellow and took their left winger completely out and he’d have been away, and i saw Joyce put his hand to his pocket and then realise it was Magnay and took his hand out and just spoke to him instead, without doubt it was because he knew he’d messed up big time with the Rovers keeper.

Was two years earlier in the FA trophy final.

Hope so. He should stand in a really noticeable place with a pen and notepad and shake his head in an obvious way whenever dross gives newport a borderline decision
