I don't care about representation, I care about equal opportunities. Surely their first port of call should have been to look at the demographics of the people getting their coaching badges first to see if that was representative of footballers as a whole before assuming that the coaching disparity was the result of discrimination. This could end up being a 'solution' to the wrong problem that causes more harm than good, because now (even though it probably won't be the case) any BAME coach they do appoint will seem like a diversity hire.

Not in favour of any sort of skewing but at least in NFL's case you can justify it seeing as the big majority of players are black. This is just pitiful. Be better just to have a culture where clubs are mocked for not interviewing or employing non whiteys.

It's a fucking joke, as if a manager doesn't get a job interview or a job because he is black or ethnic. Look how many players are black or ethnic playing in the English game so there clearly isn't a race issue, if they ain't up to the job then they ain't up to it it's as simple as that it's fuck all to do with skin colour. Anything people can make an issue out of to do with racism, homophobic concerns, women's equality etc then they will. 3% of Britain's population is black, around the same level as football managers so where's the issue, oh wait there isn't one just people trying to make one. This is the most non racist country in the world.

The FA says this move will apply to jobs across England teams but BAME applicants will still need to show they meet the relevant recruitment criteria.

This is the bit I don't get.

Surely having to meet the relevant recruitment criteria is standard and always has been regardless of race. This makes it sound as if the FA are suggesting they wouldn't normally consider black applicants but will now start to, as long as they meet the criteria.

This would be a potential fix if the problem was that nobody from a decent pool of good BAME managers ever got a look in for the England job.

That isnt the problem however. This is a token gesture thats easy to implement but doesnt achieve anything. All this does is guarantee Chris Houghton an interview assuming the job came up tomorrow.

Get more BAME coaches and managers qualified and working at league clubs. Then go from there. We've got such a significant number of BAME players and have done for 20 years, so what can be done to ensure they are attracted to coaching and management upon retirement.

Start with the pipeline, then let the competitiveness of football take care of the rest as far as progression is concerned.

What a load of shite! the only criteria to become an England manager is to be successful in the past by having a good track record at winning things thats it, doesn't matter what background that person is from. Unfortunately atm that doesn't include any Englishman black or white and certainly not Gareth Southgate.

No wonder we don't progress anywhere when you have numpties in charge of the FA. Would any other country in the world go through with this nonsense rooney rule? I think not, best person suitable for the job end off regardless of where you come from.

They've basically just shoved a handful of black coaches into the set-up purely because they're black. This is far more regressive even than the Rooney rule. Paul Nevin will be with the seniors, and Sol Campbell and Terry Connor will be with the U21s. It's so fucking creepy how far this identity politics has been allowed to invest the FA, and must be humiliating for those coaches on some level even if they're happy about the opportunity.
