What if we had a world cup qualifying system and a European cup qualifying system in which the groups are made up of the neighbours in the rankings (Group A is the top 8; Group B is the next 8; Group C is 17-24; ...), and then the show-down stage after the group stage would pit those who have not yet qualified and not yet been eliminated against each other in duelling for the last qualifying places. This way, we would replace the current system where most games have a huge favourite playing against a massive underdog with no hope of even a draw with a new system where each game is full of suspense, real possibilities and excitement.
So if Europe gets 15 slots in the world cup, at the end of the group stage we would already have A1, A2, A3, B1, B2, and C1 qualified, so nine places are still up for grabs, for which ten ideas could be assembled and compared. Here's one of the many: D1 or C3, E1 or D3, F1 or C3, G1 or B3, C2 or B5 or A6 or D4 (1 of 4), D2 or C4, E2 or B4 , F2 or A5, A4 or E3.
Imagine if reason, logic and common sense could prevail, and the group stages could be turned from a meaningless procession of cruel nasty trouncings of the small into a truly hard to predict and good to watch spectacle of good viewing football
