Second sacking of the day, this one is justified though. Fraud of a manager, how he only just managed to get that Wigan side promoted last season with the players he had and the money they'd spent compared with the rest of the division I'll never know.

They'll survive if they appoint a half decent manager at this level, they've got the squad.

Did they expect to be doing that much better though in the Championship?

They should've been, their squad is better than their position suggests.

But then he's an inexperienced manager. How do new managers learn to come through a tricky period if they're not afforded any time at the first sign of danger. Disappointed by the decision.

Seems to have been a busy few weeks of sackings right down to the conference. I think this in-experienced manager thing is a excuse everyone has to start somewhere. As many experienced manager failures as there are 1st time managers. Look at Nigel Pearson at derby failing and the success (so far) with Paul checking bottom and Lee Johnson. You could say Rafa benetez was a gamble in the championship. Not case with Wigan but these sacking managers left right n centre seems to be more a thing with foreign owners.

Their squad isn't that good, despite what the Will Grigg song would have you believe. Also, money doesn't guarantee success, just look at all the problems Derby have had. This seems like a really rash decision to me.

It's still far better than the table suggests, as was the case with us last season when we had Cotterill here and were struggling.

They should be fine.

We expected to stay up this season. Having watched us almost every week, I can say with absolute certainty that Gary Caldwell would have taken us down. Therefore the right decision was made. Very happy with David Sharpe for once again showing a big pair of balls in pulling the plug rather than waiting any longer. Another chairman could easily have waited a little longer, but Sharpe knew he'd just be prolonging the inevitable.

Paul Jewell is available!
You say that as a laugh, but he'd have the support of every single fan if he was appointed. Something that I can't say for many other potential candidates (if any at all).

But maybe the team just aren't good enough, and it's not Caldwell's fault? From the outside looking in the recruitment in the summer was pretty poor, not sure if that was him or someone else but that would be what I would be concerned about.

Just seen Caldwell with Reece James and a couple of others at the hub on Buckshaw, must have got himself a nice pay off, he couldn't stop laughing.

Was quite surprised when I saw this, thought he deserved more of a chance after bringing them up last season but that's football for you. To be honest I don't think Wigan's squad is any better than a lower bottom half team but if they appoint the right man then they should be safe. Can't see Warburton going to Wigan unless Rangers are going to sack him.

Excitement over Warburton was shortlived. Ex Bolton and Preston player Warren Joyce set to get the gig. Can't see this ending well!

Personally think that's an excellent appointment. Been wondering when he'd get his first job. Hope he does well for you, and I don't particularly like Wigan so that's hard for me to say.

We're in a dogfight, we need a scrapper not a kiddy developer. A bad start and he'll lose a lot of fans straight away with his history. I wanted Gary Caldwell out on the assumption that we'd actually get someone experienced to replace him. Owen Coyle lasted around 6 months, I can see this bloke lasting less than that. Got disaster written all over it.

I said exactly the same when we appointed LJ, that we needed a proven manager.

Hasn't worked out too badly for us.

Surprise, surprise, Gomez plays, Gomez scores and we win. Perhaps if Caldwell had have played our most talented player he would still be our manager now.

If the new manager can install confidence into the team and tweak the tactics then he's got a very talented young squad at his disposal and given how tight the league is, can certainly drag us into mid table obscurity which would be were our squad should be.

8th best defensive record in the league and strength in depth, another two key defenders returning from injury soon should help. The fact that we have a GD of -2 and all of our defeats have been by just 1 goal, shows we're not exactly getting outclassed and are more than competing. The issue has been our midfield under performing which given it's our strongest area on paper is ironic. Grigg is playing well but is isolated and feeding of scraps, being forced to try and create his own chances and having to drift out the box and set up chances instead.

If the new manager can get Wildschut, Powell, Power and Gomez full of confidence and playing to their potential then we'll win more than we lose. Not forgetting the return of young Gilbey who looks a real talent and has been a big miss during this spell of struggling for goals, recalling Colclough would be sensible too, tricky and quick and will cause defences problems, something we're lacking right now.

No teachers pet Max Power either. Gary only has himself to blame. Played 10 lost 7 with no wins away from home under him and look what happens! Vitally this buys us time in terms of searching for a new manager. Only Reading at home before the international break, I wouldn't mind if the caretakers stay in charge for that game as well if it means getting the right man.

Warburton might have been wanted by Wigan, but there's no way he'll come back to the Championship unless he's been fired by Rangers.

Warren Joyce leaving United could be bad news for us in terms of getting a heads up on United's youth players.
