Certainly been none up here recently. Indeed, our brass monkeys would laugh in the face of it.

Isn't it expected that the winters will be milder and as a result wetter due to global warming?

We had a wet summer/Autumn in the main and it's bloody freezing recently up here so that theory isn't really working up here.

It's generally bad news for the UK, even in the relatively short term - although not as bad as the effect of a modest sea level rise on some Pacific Islands and the likes of Bangladesh. Having seen the evidence, I'm convinced it's happening but I'm not getting in a fruitless argument about it.

I used to lead a Climate Change Adaptation Team in the E of E before retiring. We are already putting an extra 0.5m on the height of sea defences and making planning decisions on the coast (N Norfolk, E Yorks, etc) on the basis of sea level rise and higher storm surges or in the Health Service on the basis of more frequent extremes of temperature.

It is likely that we'll get ( are getting?), on average, warmer wetter winters (less frosts and freeze ups) but also more frequent extreme events throughout the year (like yesterday's rain in the SW) but, as the ice sheets continue to melt, the Gulf Stream is likely to switch off. At that point, we'll be back to temperatures more like other countries and cities at our latitude - like Newfoundland and Vancouver, with frozen rivers and sea ice. Global warming doesn't mean Scotland warming.

In the history of the earth, all dominant species have had to adjust or die to some major earth changes, we were always going to have come up against our own at some point. Maybe we're having to do so at an unnatural place in the earth's natural cycles, we've probably caused it or certainly helped cause it, and cleaning up our act and improving our technology seems like common sense as much anything. But the earth and it's land mass / seas and climate have never been static - far from it. Us lot just happened to have grown up in the blink of an eye during a very calm period of the earth's natural history.

To a thick layman like me this seems somewhat counter intuitive - Arctic ice disappears because of the warming, screwing with the flows of cold and warm air...and a result other parts get colder and ice reforms elsewhere?

Perhaps we can re-home the Polar Bears to the Yorkshire Moors? ;)

No but emerging states like India and China cannot be so easily controlled by Freemasons.

Various things will change and are constantly changing over millenia.

In this specific case, the impact of changes on ocean currents is the key. The suggestion is that cold fresh water flowing into the Atlantic will eventually interfere with the currents that result in the Gulf Stream - which is one of the reasons that the British Isles are unusually warm and, in particular the west coast (especially of Scotland and Ireland), are so frost free.

There are extremes on both sides of the argument, from deniers to the Mini European Ice Age proponents that I hinted at. A more detailed analysis would probably suggest that, even if the Gulf Stream slowed (it already is) or actually stopped because of the inflow of fresh water, other factors have more influence on our high temps for the latitiude.

"The seasonal ocean heat storage and pattern of atmospheric heat transport add up to make winters in western Europe 15 to 20 degrees C warmer than those in eastern North America. A very similar process occurs across the Pacific Ocean. The ocean heat transport warms the North Atlantic Ocean and the land on both sides by a modest few degrees C. The only place where the ocean heat transport fundamentally alters climate is along the coast of northern Norway which would be sea ice-covered were it not for the warm northward flowing Norwegian Current...."

The "few degrees" might just compensate for the warm up we're expecting here in the fens - unfortunately, if the ice keeps melting we might just find the sea on our doorstep as well.

It gets complicated when we try to work out what impact small changes will have on complex systems like airflows and ocean currents - so nobody actually KNOWS how it will evolve, especially in specific locations. We can only make forecasts and predictions with varying degrees of certainty and uncertainty. The scientists will continue to say that - which provides the opening for deniers to pick specifics apart.

The Chinese are certainly driven by their arch-enemies' control of fossil fuels (USA and Russia) and the impacts of pollution on their cities but they also recognise that climate change and global warming are genuine concerns for them. They are massively committed to renewable energy and aware/concerned about sea level rise and it's impacts on their coastal cities.

This summer, I saw massive solar farms and endless ranks of wind turbines in the desert in the NW of China and every river had hydropower dams at regular intervals with more being constructed.

The world is full of Chinese but I suspect that any attempts to set up lodges in Shanghai or Chengdu would get short shrift from their equivalents in the People's Republic of China - the Communist Party and the Red Army. You don't mess with those secret societies - as the guys in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Tibet keep finding out.

Must just point out that the Republic of China is technically Taiwan's official name, you are/were referring to the People's Republic of China.
