This is just one of the many instances where despite the club performing well in the season, the manager has been asked to step down by the owners due to increasing expectations. During his time at Watford, Flores ensured that Watford were not pushovers. Despite a good league standing, this could not secure his job for the next season.

What are your thoughts on this?

nah it's been like this for a good few years now. i don't think this season is worse than others but it's gotten ridiculous over the past 5 or so years and i'd argue it'll get worse now leicester won the title, small clubs will start feeling they can push for european places. like watford seemingly

also welcome to the forum mate

The Watford situation is madness. if their wildest dreasm they were targetting anything other than staying up this season as a great season they're utterly nuts. it seems Flores was undone by having a too good first half of the season, Frankly the owners at Watford need their head checked. that's 2 managers who have been very successful (for Watford) and still sacked in a row now. Hope they go down next season

The way clubs dispose of managers for no good reason is becoming ridiculous, particularly when you consider the financial implications involved in getting rid.

Ian is right regarding the levels of expectation that fans of smaller clubs now have after seeing what Leicester have done and also the likes of West Ham and Southampton. On Stoke's own fans forum earlier this year some of their fans were believing they could gatecrash the top 4 or at least get a Europa spot and now they've had a bad run and slipped to their usual mid-table position some are questioning whether Hughes should be their manager next season

Watford have a history of this, and they've made some good appointments to be fair to them. Everyone said they were wrong to get rid of Jokanovic (which they were a bit), but Flores was a good appointment. Felt he could have taken them further, but Mazzarri could be a good appointment too.

Watford are bonkers to get rid of their manager but this is the nature of football in today's game. Would the board be happy with where they are now at the start of the season? Probably. But they've had a rotten run over the last few months and have got ideas above their station.

Football is a fickle game. People will whinge now but won't care if they have a good year next season. Personally I think it's a big mistake and they'll suffer for it next year.

Whilst it is harsh from the outside if you've seen our general performances since Christmas and the style of play you wouldn't be surprise given the Pozzo reputation (as you say they weren't that fussed about keeping the guy who got us promoted - although he wasn't sacked - just a new contract not agreed)

Also he appeared to be very stubborn picking the same old players who clearly weren't performing/needed a break ahead of younger more attacking players which the Pozzos like to see (Flores himself was allowed to sign 2/3 players in January who haven't impressed - again that didn't please the owners)

Its telling none of our fans seem particularly bothered either.

Jarv is probably right - we almost did too well and the dip has been quite alarming so guessing the Pozzos feel Flores wasn't the man to turn it around.

Still its risky and one change won't work but they don't seem to care so have to go with it...

Surely the answer to wether it was 'bonkers' or not to ask Flores to step aside will only be known next season. If Watford make a step up then it'll have been the right choice. We had a similar thread like this for West Ham last season when they didn't renew Big Sams contract and took a chance on Bilic.

Well the next one might be Italian..

:dk:

Flores actually had quite a decent CV TBF...more so than the other managers we've had (well unless you count Zola's playing one!)

Or Leicester when they sacked Nigel Pearson and hired Claudio Ranieri. That worked out, didn't it?

Yeah. That was a little bit different as he wasn't sacked for results really, but yeah.
