Colchester have lost 3 on the bounce after getting a few notable results and getting on the verge of the play off places. Vale are as inconsistent as ever and have a pretty miserable away record so far - something has to change.

Needless to say that Vale are the patron saints of giving a helping hand to teams on a poor run. From what I gather of Colchester, they are a pretty good attacking team but can't defend for toffee. Vale on the other hand have been generally pretty good this season and probably should be a few places higher. Our lack of a goal poacher has often meant that we are losing by the odd goal rather than scrapping out a few positive results ourselves.

As I say every time, if we play the way we did against Donny, Sheff Utd and Wigan, we will win but otherwise we're likely to return pointless.

We really need to get a win to bash us up the league again but I wouldn't be at all surprised by a draw or narrow defeat.

Chris Birchall starting. Deary me. I don't like giving him stick because he's been a good servant to Vale and also a Vale fan. But he hasn't been good enough for a few seasons now.

I don't believe he's as bad as fans make out, he's been made a bit of a scapegoat, granted he's not the Birchall of ten years ago but he's done ok if not spectacular when called upon.

Another corner and another goal conceded by Vale. This really isn't good enough that it keeps repeating itself.

Another corner conceded from and our stellar winger injured. Not a good night so far. Missing three key men tonight now.

Massively poor result and to score once against a side who's been shipping goals like Colchester have is dreadful. Injury to Andoh too so can't see us doing much against Burton now. Embarrassing that we've conceded from a corner for the sixth or seventh time in about 9 games too.

Big questions Page.

Dog shit away and superb at home. Why not set up away as we do at home. Missing a few players as well which shows how our first 11-13 are decent but the back up is dreadful. Hope Andoh is back ASAP.

We're hardly 'free falling'. We won four in a row, absolutely battered Bury despite losing, and were comfortably in front at half-time away at Shrewsbury. A shocking second half there was followed by being 3-0 down inside 15 minutes at Wigan on Saturday, but that's only an hour of football.

Otherwise, we've been doing just fine. There wasn't much in it tonight until midway through the second half, at which point we started to pick it up a gear and could have had a couple more.

Uche has apologised for himself and the team tonight at least someone in the side has the balls too.

Squad has no depth because we kept too much League 2/Non League dead wood.

Bearing in mind we drew first 2 away games, we have now lost 4 out of 5 on the road, usually cannot abide Ray Williams on radio joke but he was bang on at kick off saying it was a negative team selection. Bodin also mentioned Birchall's defensive qualities !! All well and good but a team who are obviously awful at the back and on the back of a 5-0 hiding needed the game taking to them. We go to Burton on sat who have now gone 3 games without a goal, so we all know the outcome there. We are 3 points off relegation and the Shrewsbury game a week on saturday is fast becoming a huge 6 pointer. Simply not good enough, last 4 games 1 point from 9 and a JPT exit with a whimper, if i hear the phrase ' we go again ' from Page i will scream .

He has not done ok he is absolutely gash, at Sarfend he was non existent, Byron Moore did more ( pardon the pun ) in 15 minutes than hey fatty bum bum did in 75. His contract should of been withdrawn along with Yates once they criticised loyalty, just the loyalty Birchall showed when going to Coventry at the dangling of 50 pieces of silver.

Why don't I ever put a bet on Vale?

This result is basically Vale in a nutshell. Why on earth did we play Birchall against a team that conceded 5 at the weekend? I know Colchester have had one or two decent results this season but they've conceded more than any team in the leagues and yet we set up for a draw! With no disrespect, it's a very poor result from our perspective. Page said prior to the game that we had to 'go at them from the off' - it certainly didn't seem that way. If we'd scored early I'm sure Colchester would have crumbled.

Put your mortgage on us to lose at Burton on Saturday as we've absolutely no chance. Once Andoh went off it exposed our massive lack of pace and Page's insane retained list is now forming half of the first team! League 2 standard players at best.

I'm pretty sure that Smurthwaite isn't going to be happy as he's backed the manager and it's his team. His selections and substitutions are at best baffling and at worse career suicide. It's only our pretty good home form that's keeping us afloat at the moment.

Colchester have had some very good results, beat Gills, won at Sheff Utd and Swindon though the latter isn,t as good as seemed at the time !! It is not being disrespectful saying we ought to of got something, Colchester would say the same when come to Vale that they ought get at least a point. What is pathetic is the negative tripe, our 5 away points are against the bottom 3, we are the only side not to score at Crewe all season and at Fleetwood Page got out of jail as Daniel saved his bacon, first half could of gone in at least 2 down. Sick of hearing about budgets and wages, a top 3 of Gills Walsall and Burton, this is weakest League one for a good while and we are meandering like a little lost boy. If or when we lose on Saturday then Smurf got man up and pull the trigger. Last night was first game i have missed and it won,t be the last given the meek efforts. Cost me over 100 quid to go Southend for me and my lad with train, tickets and food and we huffed and puffed with nothing at the end. Prefer lose 5-2 and give it a go instead of the negative shit we are watching away from home. Got my ticket for Burton but never has Jeff Stelling been more appealing with feet up and a footy coupon on.

We need to establish why we've been superb at home generally against on paper far tougher opposition than away from home where we've been weak against weaker opposition and address it. We also need to seriously address this set piece issue as I think of the 16 goals conceded this season only 6 are from open play!

That's the frustrating thing for me. We're at least on equal size terms with the top 3 as well as in budgets I would imagine but yet we're so inconsistent. I suspect that Smurf might be forced into a move sooner rather than later as attendances are dropping alarmingly- no-one wants to go and watch a team that meanders around the mid to lower table.

So, do you want him or not?
