Luton Town away

Hi Luton fans.

Booked our train tickets and hotel for our away game on Saturday 30th January.

Any hints and tips on nightlife / best pubs & clubs / places to avoid.

It really depends on your age and what you are looking for in terms of nightlife. For younger people the nightlife in Luton is, broadly speaking, terrible these days. Anything that could be considered a club have steadily closed their doors over recent years and most people I know look to the surrounding area for 'big' nights out.
There are a couple of 'Spoons, one of which is open late on weekends. The Red Lion Hotel (locally known as Brookes') is generally where people end up these days unless you fancy braving Yates's. There are a few decent pubs in the town centre which open late and often have things going on. The George II often has live music, as does the Castle, both leaning slightly towards the Rock genre (the Castle especially). There's also a little known place known as the Bear Club which is officially a Jazz club (although I've never known Jazz to be played there) which has live music almost every weekend and draws an eclectic crowd. They also import a lot of diverse foreign beers and lagers which are worth a try. The Brewery Tap isnt terrible although it's USP of a decent town centre beer garden is usually moot in deepest darkest January. There are some really good places to eat with some really great Italians, Thai and Indian restaurants if you can search them out.
Matchdays, most places are off limits to away fans. The George II and The White House (one of the 'Spoons) both operate a home fans only policy and, whilst the London Hatter (other 'Spoons) doesn't officially, it's probably best avoided. I'd also recommend steering clear of the Wheel Wrights and Duke of Clarence if it has reopened by then. In all likelihood the away fan will be funneled towards Charlie Browns (or whatever it is called now) adjacent to the central station and is the designated away pub. A special mention should be made for the Bricklayers Arms, close the station. It is for all intents and purposes a Luton pub, however s generally away fans friendly. It's worth a visit if real ales are your thing as they have a wide selection available, including the clubs own ale Solyd Gold, the proceeds from which go to the charity Supporters of Luton Youth Development.

Luton will probably be playing ManUre in the cup on that weekend.

On a slightly more serious point for other interested parties, a better plan may be to base the weekend in a more welcoming town/city and slip in/out for the match on the train. That said, the curries/indian and Italian meal opportunities are as good as anywhere in the country - if that and a quiet ish pint or two at the Bricklayers is your type of Friday night.

Is it the Friday night or Saturday night you're looking to go out? If its the Friday then the trains to and from London run through the night and you are only looking at 45 minutes at most from Luton (as short as half hour if you get the fast train). Saturday night becomes a bit more tricky as trains only run until 1am or so.
Locally there's a few options. If you can bring yourselves to go to Milton Keynes there's a lot of places to go if you like all your pubs and clubs on leisure complexes. Regrettably Watford is a decent night out although I haven't ventured there for a while.
I'd say your best bet is London as obviously you'll be spoilt for choice.

Not bad. There's Veeda which has its days. Batchwood is very 'teenager'. Good live music venue in St A's though, The Horn.

If you're considering the trip to St Albans just go to the Forum in Hatfield.

I remember the Devils Den, which was always much cooler than the main ballroom. It was a great venue though. We used to run a coach every second week from Abingdon, Oxford and there were always loads from the Oxford area there. Saw all of the big name soul acts at the Cali. It was the first place I saw a pool room, in the early seventies, and the first place we saw bowling shirts and peg trousers being worn.

One strange thing that sticks in the memory is that it was a big night out, rather than a night on the pull, and from the minute you arrived, and queued up outside there was a buzz. It was all about the acts. There could be a bit of an edge, with lads from all over the place there, but I don't remember it kicking off much there?

St Albans/Harpenden for decent pubs.

A night out in Luton is recommended though, it's a (cheap) experience, and if you're really lucky you can touch some duct tape on a thigh in Flares.

Don't forget I'm from Oxford, not Luton mate, so the answer is no. We did used to get about a fair bit though, as the nightlife in Oxford at the time wasn't great.

Regarding your next post, I have been to Cinderella Rockafellas in Northampton, and you won't like me for this, but we went to a club in Watford, right in the town centre, that was pretty good. It was one of the chains of the time, but I can't remember which one, maybe Top Rank or Locarno?

lol Baileys. Went there one night with a bunch of friends and the Watford team came in late on after an away game at Sunderland. They were cool and banter flowed in a good way and particularly remember having a fairly long chat with John Barnes and another midfielder at the time who had got a deflected winner fairly recently against us Jobson Johnson anyay? It all went South when Nigel Callaghan came over and started taking the piss about us going to Milton Keynes. He got a pint thrown over him and George Reilly thought it was me and offered me out. Nearly shat myself. Looked really lanky on the pitch but a mountain in front of a skinny twentty something.
