In case some are wondering how to extract a profit from a free bet offer, I’ve written an example below.

There are over 60 of these types of offers listed on MatchedBets.com which are worth around £1,000 in total.

Example of how to return a profit from a bookmaker offer

Offer : William Hill give new customers a £30 free bet when they sign up and place a bet of £10.

Step 1 – Qualifying for the free £30 bet.

The aim of this first step is to qualify to receive the £30 free bet and to keep qualifying losses to a minimum.

Let’s say you register at William Hill, deposit £10 and place your £10 bet on Southampton to beat Burnley on Saturday.

The odds for Southampton to win are currently 1.67, which means if you placed £10 on them to win, you’d receive £16.70 back from William Hill.

Obviously, this bet could either win or lose and so to ensure we don’t lose, we also place a bet on Southampton NOT to win. We do this at a betting exchange such as Betfair and these type of bets are called ‘lay’ bets.

The odds currently on Betfair for Southampton not to win (to either lose or draw) are 1.7. To work out how much our lay bet needs to be we simply use the matched betting calculator on MatchedBets.com as shown below.

The calculator tells us to place a lay bet of £10.12 which has a liability of £7.08. The liability is how much you will lose on the exchange if you bet doesn’t win. In this case, if Southampton win the match.

You’ll see from the image that if Southampton win, your overall profit will be -38p and if Southampton don’t win your profit will be -39p.

So we’ve lost 38p but now we have a £30 free bet.


Step 2 – Use your free bet to return an overall profit.

Now we need to place our free bet on a match.

The Oddsmatcher on MatchedBets.com shows that the odds on the Chelsea v Man Utd game on Sunday finishing 0-0 is 9.0 (8/1) and the odds on Betfair for the match not to finish 0-0 is 9.4.

We place our £30 free bet on 0-0 with William Hill and use the calculator to work out our lay stakes to ensure we have all outcomes covered.

The calculator shows that we need to place a lay bet of £25.67 on the match not to finish 0-0.

If the game does finish 0-0, our bet with William Hill will win and we will return a profit of £24.37. If the games doesn’t finish 0-0, our bet on Betfair Exchange will win and we will return a profit of £24.39.



If you subtract our qualifying loss of 38p then we have made a total profit of £24 by completing the William Hill offer.
