National tournaments qualifying for CL same year?

Had a weird dream the other night: That the format of the European football tournaments changed, so that the national European tournaments qualifies for the Champions League the same year, not the following year as now. So CL acts as playoffs for the ultimate European club championship. Obviously, that would mean that the national tournaments needs to end earlier in the year, and maybe CL needs to be shortened in ammount of matches.
Don't know how an UEFA Cup or the World Cup would fit in. The national cups (FA Cup, etc.) could still be played "post season," while the CL "play-off" takes place, to keep the "treple"-potential.
I don't know. Just some REM stuff. Maybe my subconscious feels there're way too many important games on top of each other, and I can't focus on more than one thing at a time.

Was that its format? I'm too young to know. Why didn't they keep it that way upgrading to the CL?
