Is this new format really called "ABBA"?
ABBA's song "Waterloo" comes to my mind. Suitable for Englishmen and penalty shootouts.....:D

What is the point? How many penalty shootouts do teams at this level have? Think Crewe have had 3 competitive shootouts in the last 6-7 years. Total waste of time them trying to change this. Lets not focus on important issues, no, lets change a system that really has little impact on a teams season.

It's something that needs fixing, they might as well trial it somewhere where it won't have a huge effect before they do it for, y'know, world cups and stuff.

I just don't buy that it's broken. Yeah, team A scores first and continues to score, pressure is on. But if team A misses their first spot kick, then boom, pressure is flipped. Look at Huddersfield. They won back in May after taking 2nd. Reading going first didn't stop them missing their 4th and 5th penalties did it? Huddersfield going 2nd didn't stop them scoring penalties 3 through 5.

What about the last Euros? Germany v Italy. Germany went first, scored. Missed their 2nd, 3rd and 5th. Eventually won, yes, but going first hardly did them a lot of good, would have lost had Italy not missed 3 of their first 5. The way that shootout went, the pressure flipped backwards and forwards constantly.

Penalties are a lottery and maybe the team that goes first has the slight advantage, but 60% is enough to warrant change? I just think penalties are a lottery, which is kind of backed up by the 60-40 win ratio for the teams who go 1st. And I'm sorry, but if you've gone out of a tournament on penalties and you are blaming the fact you were taking 2nd, then my response would be: maybe you should have won the game in normal time to avoid this.

Just feels like one of those ultimately unnecessary rules changes that nobody was asking for and it will make very little difference to most clubs(and teams at international tournaments).

How about drawing the next penalty taker out of a hat?

Another absolutely pointless change for no reason other than they can. Fucking idiots.

How about scrapping the penalty shoot-out altogether and just keep playing additional periods of 15 minutes until someone scores.

Both teams should take penalties at the same time in opposite nets. Losing team has to wear shirts with the word "losers" written on in the next match.

Well said JJ. They're also forgetting the fact that if team b miss their first spot kick, then they'll be under even more pressure to score their second. Miss their second kick and their morale is all shattered.

Just the one thing you said that I don't agree with - pens are definitely not a lottery. Pens are practiced a lot during training sessions, and coaches certainly advise penalty takers on ways to improve their penno kicks. But looking at the national team you'd be correct to think otherwise.

I like this - like a fight to the death.

I have a similar idea where in extra time, every five minutes each team has to remove a player so they end up playing 6 a side. You'd get a winner in the end and at least it would be based on some sort of merit (being fitter than the other side is certainly better than being better at penalties).

I can only remember us taking part in one in a competitive game in my entire life watching Cambridge (27 years) - league cup quarter final v Forest in about 2000 - might be wrong but I don't remember any others.

1998 Laker. IIRC, we also had a pen shootout in the Auto Windscreens, possibly against Bristol City? Or was it Walsall? Can't remember.

Penalties are weighted around 60-40, it makes sense to level out the playing field. Anyone outraged about this probably needs to get a life. Apart from me, I am outraged. All this fuss is going to make bookies set odds accordingly :(

Wow earlier than I thought, so we haven't had one in almost 20 years?!?

Now you mention it we did have one in the auto windscreens in about 91ish under Beck. I want to say it was Charlton but you might be right. I was 7 so don't remember it too well!

Exactly people can go on about how they "think" it makes no difference- fact of the matter is that it's an absolute fact that it does. Current system is weighted too far in one sides favour on the basis of a coin flip - that's not right and it's a good thing that they are trying to correct it.

As someone said that penalties are a lottery why not make it more like one.

Either draw the penalty takers out of a hat, or get the teams to nominate the other sides' penalty takers.

My idea to make it even more entertaining would be to bring out say 20 boxes for each player to choose. 10 boxes contain football boots so the penalty taker can keep his boots on if he chooses one of the boxes which contains the boots. However the other 10 boxes contain various alternative footwear, clown shoes, stilettos, clogs, brogues, slippers etc and the taker has to take his penalty wearing those shoes.

I'd love to see Christiano Ronaldo stepping up to take the potential winning penalty in a Champions League final in a pair of bright pink stilettos. (he would probably still score)

Sudden death spot kick to be taken by the managers? Evans can stick it in the top corner every time

Meh, is it really worth getting that wound up about?

It's an insignificant change, and perhaps is for the better.

More important changes to moan about than this one

If you still take 5 each, can't really see the problem.

England could have 5 and the opposition 2, and they'd still fuck it up.

I was a fan of the golden goal, but not many others seemed to be

Doesn't matter what order you take the penalties in. The winner still takes it all.

In fairness I can see the sense in making this change and most football fans have an opinion on whether it's best to take the first penalties or the second penalties so a system where it made no difference could be better.

The match I was thinking of was circa 2002-2005, very close to the year we made that LDV final and got trounced by Blackpool. If it was under Beck the first coming then there would be no way I'd remember it. My memory's crap when it comes to footy, but it's another thing when it comes down to music ;)

I'll check if google wants to be my friend and see if I can find anything about the match I'm referring to.
