Thats their only investor pulling out with no one to take his place. Cutting their squad and bills left right and center. Think they will have a big struggle to stay up next season.

Terry is going to have to have a butchers around the bargain basement now. Agree they could well struggle. Didnt realise they were losing so much each month.

Not good at all. You wonder how low their revenue is if they've managed to be losing that much money monthly. Looking at their squad now and what their budget will be - added on to the fact Butcher isn't a good manager...Ouch.

Yep a big blow but it has been on the cards for a while. Lotto Les has reputedly put in excess of £1M in total to get us back into the FL and during past 2 seasons - a magnificent gesture for which all at Newport will be grateful. He is a Bristolian and supports Bristol City but lives near Newport, hence his involvement. Most of the £1M has been converted to shares and as I understand it the club is pretty much debt free. Not that we have anything in terms of assets, renting Dave as we do.

The £30-40k per month loss is a bit of a red herring as it refers to a period in the season with few home games, hence reduced income which Les temporarily covered and then presumably was paid back. Last years budget was based on an average home crowd of 3,300 which was just about achieved.

With Les pulling his "investment" for next season the playing budget has been reduced to £0.9M as opposed to £1.3M last season. Cloth has to be cut. Contracts for 15 players were not renewed last month and the back room staff were also let go. We currently have 13 players for next season including 4 kids. No back room staff so far appointed so its just Butcher at the moment. We now have 1 director only and a number of non-execs who would seem to be volunteers on the whole and not investing any cash as such.

Club is indeed in a bit of turmoil and certainly needs some more bodies at board level as well as on the pitch. Will be more than happy to stay in the league next season.

I said newport will go down and now it looks certain. Some terrible signings so far, its a shame because they did well last year.

I know it sounds daft but i'd hate to see more shit heaped on Newport as they were our opponents in the first game i saw Wycombe Wanderers in 1973 in The FA Cup when we were in The Isthmian League beating them 3-1.

Who would have thought a money man with no real affiliation to the club would get bored in League 2 following promotion and pull the plug.

We managed to stay up on a budget no higher than 900k so it's not the end of the world.

Didn't you sign John-Lewis? That's a decent signing I think having watched him a couple of times last season!
I think you'll be ok next season, you might not pull up any trees but you won't go down I just hope we don't get into bother at the bottom again!!!

I don't think Newport fans should despair. Way too much crap is made about budgets; it's about what can be achieved with that budget, and is all down to the club/management skills.

Aren't Accrington, Daggers and Morecombe annually the favourites for relegation due to the smaller budgets? Yet year on year they achieve FL status. There's no reason that any other club should fear a £900k p.a. player budget........However, I'm not convinced by the appointment of Butcher and his abilities with any sized budget. Though I'll readily agree to not fully looking in to it.

If your talking 900k as wages, then over an 18 man squad that is an average of 50000 per player..... given younger ones will be on a lot less I would suggest that is more than enough to avoid relegation, normally those that go down do so for a variety of reasons

Signings to date have been encouraging - all from the conference so far which is fine by me. Most of the last squad were signed from non league and acquitted themselves well in the FL. Big question mark will be how Butcher performs as boss. Plenty of teams in L2 with smaller budgets. Looking forward to next season - gonna be a real challenge.

Accrington and Dagenham stay up each year on the thick end of a button, so it is doable, and both usually achieve it well.

It's not a good sign for Newport, but even with a small squad you can still have a decent season.

Don't think their signings have been too inspiring so far. I reckon Butcher needs to go 'Moneyball' on League 2's ass.

We used the extra cash he gave us and got back into the league. We are now having to take a long hard look at the budget and become more sustainable, hence Butcher's brief. He is confident that he can assemble a low-cost squad similar to the one he put together at Inverness Caledonian. I don't think it's a bad thing if we can stay solvent and survive in League Two. By the look of it, we aren't the only club who are looking at their budget carefully this season. What worries me is the time it will take to hold out regarding the demands of the players and their agents. As the start of the season season grows ever closer, players will be more willing to sign a contract for the wages we are willing to pay. However, the squad looks very threadbare at the moment. We will struggle this season, but we won't go down.

If we do go down, there are worse things that can happen to your football club ... believe me. Relegation is preferable to folding completely. At least our misfortune will cheer up the supporters of proper football clubs like the good Doctor Crawley who seems to personify everything that there is to love about his team. I wish them well this season.

Calm down dear.
Hardly a WUM, I've been around these forums for a number of years.
I stand by my comments....Newport brought shame to our home a few years back.
It's not been forgotten, and quite rightly so if you ask me.

This will be our 10th season in League 2 - our budget is usually around 500-600k per season so it can happen - although its not always pretty watching us!

Your club pretty much do wonders on that budget . 10 years is very impressive , I didn't realise it had been that long .

Sorry to be pedantic, but it's your 9th season not 10th. You first entered the FL in 2006/07.

There is obviously a risk in signing so many conference players, yes it comes off at times but I'd suggest that's in the minority. Good luck but at this point I think it's going to be a struggle to stay up.
