The sale of Patrick Vieira from Arsenal to Juventus = the worst sale in football history?

Good idea for a thread, PowPun.

I'm going to say Ibe to Bournemouth because, according to Bilo, Saltire and every other Liverpool fan on this forum, he "pisses all over Sterling and is clearly the better player - in fact Sterling isn't fit to lace the young lad's boots". The fact that Sterling went for £50m and young Ibe seems to be on his way for a mere £15m suggests this is either an awful piece of business by Liverpool or that Saltire, Bilo et al couldn't tell the difference between their sphincter and their elbow.

Though technically not a sale, Pogba to Juve is far worse.

No sale, no place in this thread.

Sorry JJ, I know you are a maverick and I respect you for that but sometimes a man's just gotta follow the rules - you dig?

Vieira was the second best player in the team, captain of the club and the best defensive midfielder in the world and Arsenal just sold him for no good reason at all

Vieira was desperate to leave, and we already had Cesc ready to take his position in the squad.

Not true at all, Vieira wanted to finish his career at Arsenal but the board was neutral if he stayed or leaved so he got insulted and decided to leave

Maybe not as impactful as the Vieira loss, but Liverpool selling Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid because Benitez wanted Gareth Barry instead was pretty bad. They went from title challengers to mid-table obscurity the moment he left and Benitez was a dead man walking.

Far more impactful then, surely? Liverpool went from 2nd to 7th in one season. We dropped to 4th. Not exactly good but not as disastrous as 2009-10 was for Liverpool.

That's assuming that Vieira and Xabi Alonso were the sole reasons for those declines, when obvs they were not...

The season after Vieira left, Arsenal made the only Champions League final in their history, and nearly won despite being on 10 men for 75 minutes. Vieira wanted to leave; we thought he left for Real Madrid consecutive summers prior to this move. Transitioning from a core of Henry, Vieira, Pires, Bergkamp, Campbell, Cole, etc. in their primes is the reason Arsenal declined. Those are six Premier League "hall-of-fame" players. There isn't a side in the Premier League that currently has a much quality as the core of that side. There probably hasn't been since some of the best United sides late last decade.

A certain Preston based individual won't like that.

But you're right. Alonso went from being a decent player in the couple of seasons prior to Benitez's ridiculous attempt to whore him out, to being arguably our best player in his final campaign. Our decline in 2010 was based on far more than him leaving. It was a number of factors, the main one being Benitez becoming more and more unstable.

Yeah but in the Premier League they got 16 points less than the season before, barely made the 4th place

We also signed Alexander Hleb, which may go some way to explaining the shortfall.

Went on to be one of Pep Guardiola's first signings. A NON-EU signing to boot; Pep clearly was infatuated by all the laterals in his heat maps and pass charts. To be fair, the attack with Cesc, Rosicky, Hleb, Adebayor, RvP, and Eduardo was probably the best in the post Invincibles era.

What a side in 2007-2008: Gallas was our captain and false 10; Walcott still had promise; Sagna had that weird hair; Almunia had that weirder hair; Denilson was a thing; Diaby still had a pulse; Eboue and Bendtner were (probably) best friends.

I'd say that was one of your worst sides irrespective of where you finished in the league. A team full of shit houses.

What do you mean by shit houses?

I don't know about worst sides (plenty of sides early this decade beat them out), but I think the 83 point league season was product of a dynamic strike force, midfield cohesion, and important players staying fit. Overachievers compared to our recent trend of underachieving. Apart from striker, I'm not sure where that XI was stronger than this current side. The argument that the league is more balanced these days probably explains the better point differential, too.

Sorry, shit houses meaning cowards/wimps/bottle jobs.

Don't get me wrong, they were a great side when the pressure was off and teams let em play, but anytime they were 'got at' or a big pressure game came along they'd bottle.

He was also humiliated by his former team in the QF's on the run to that final, and out-muscled by Pires of all people, which lead to a goal for Arsenal. I remember an Arsneal player dribbling past him during that tie and ending up a good 10 yards ahead of Vieira within a couple of seconds, he looked finsihed as a top class midfielder. He spent most of that season battling a groin injury and never again looked close to the player he was in his Arsenal prime. Don't think his sale was that bad at all, they got good money for a player going through what turned out to be a rapid decline, and they were able to bring Cesc through because of it.

An "ageing" Pat Jennings from Spurs to Arsenal, kept goal for 8 years for the Gooners. Pique was a poor sale from Man Yoo's point of view. Letting Pogba go to get Scholes out of retirement and play John O'Shea in midfield was arguably Ferguson's most moronic move. Milan letting Pirlo go for free, Milan selling Edgar Davids to Juve for £5mil, Inter part-exchanging Cannavaro for Fabian fucking Carini, Inter allowing Seedorf to join Milan, the Eto'o/Ibra swap + £40mil. 90's/early 00's Italian football is littered with transfer fuck ups and mental fee's, mainly involving Inter.

Yeah, wasn't really thinking about it, just throwing another major loss out there. Obviously Xabi wasn't the only reason for their decline, but he was their best player and they could never control games in the same way after he left. I put their decline down to losing him as much as Benitez becoming unstable, though the two go hand in hand.

Jaap Stam was another fuck up from Ferguson. Might have been the best defender United ever had, still had a few years left at the top level.

I think Lukaku could end up biting Chelsea on the arse for the next decade.

Vieira is exactly the kind of player Arsenal have been missing, with him they either finished 1 or 2, without him nearly only 3 and 4 spots

Lol yeah, there can be literally no other reason for this (other than the fact that Abramovich rocked up, Arsenal had a £390m stadium to pay for, and a thousand-odd other reasons as well maybe).
