As we enter the international break it is a good time to review what happened in the first 7 rounds of the 2016/17 Premier League season and also look at some longer term betting opportunity.
With seven rounds in the top flight of English football behind us, we decided to make a short review of what has happened so far in the competition. The main difference in comparison to the last season is the fact that each of the most famous teams in England is currently sitting in the top part of the table.
We will start with Manchester City who have been impeccable in the opening six rounds of the competition under Pep Guardiola. The Spanish manager has literally transferred the playing style he preferred whilst training Barcelona and Bayern Munich. The Citizens are obviously best suited to it, as they have the players who like to keep the ball possession and play short passes all around the pitch. This has brought the team to the very top with six wins in six matches before the worst performance in the season when Manchester City was completely outplayed b Tottenham Hotspurs at White Hart Lane. However, Guardiola’s men are still the main favorites to win the competition at this stage, as they have realistically shown the best football so far in the season, having also beaten their bitter city rivals United at the Old Trafford without their main star Kun Aguero. You can back City to lift the trophy at 9/10 right now! Kun Aguero has scored five goals so far in the season, even though he missed three back to back matches due to suspension. He is priced up at 7/5 to be the top goal scorer of the competition!
The red part of Manchester is also hoping for a big campaign this year. They have signed probably the best the market had to offer, as the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba are wearing Manchester United this season. When you add the trophy manager Jose Mourinho, one just cannot leave them out as one of the main league title contenders. United are trailing five points behind City at the moment, but their fans are still more than optimistic after a commanding win over the champions Leicester City with 4 – 1 on home ground. United are 16/1 to win the title, which has a decent value. Mourinho’s main goal will be to secure the Champions League spots for the next season, and you can get 7/10 odds for this kind of bet. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is 7/1 to top the list of goalscorers, while you can get 25/1 betting on the rising star Markus Rashford to keep up with the good form from the start of the campaign.
John Pentin from tipping site BettingTips4you.com has been helping us with the analysis and he believes that the London teams have also been playing very well at the start of the season. This can especially be said for Tottenham Hotspur who are currently sitting in the second position. Mauricio Pochettino’s men managed to reduce the gap at the top of the table to a single point after a commanding home win over the Citizens in the seventh round of the competition. They don’t have much chances of lifting the trophy at the end of the season, but they are surely worth backing to earn the place among top four teams in the league at the odds of 7/10. Arsene Wenger is no longer taken seriously in England, which might be his most dangerous weapon this season. He has a strong potential in his team. Alexis Sanchez is playing amazing at the start of the new campaign and he has the capacity of leading the team towards top four positions. The odds of 9/20 given on this betting option are not going to make you rich though. Still, it is hard to believe the Gunners can challenge the title, but the fans in North London will surely go for 7/1 odds and hope for the miracle! Chelsea somehow entered the new campaign in the slowest way, out of all the big names in England. Antonio Conte did manage to earn 13 points so far in the competition, but the Blues were far from impressive at the start of the season, and we do not see the value in backing them to lift the trophy, even though the odds are huge, set at 16/1. One can get 1/1 to back Chelsea to end the competition among the top four teams which is again very questionable. Diego Costa is, however, currently leading the top goalscorers list with six goals in seven games. He is 6/1 to stay at the top, which is surely worth trying, considering the fact he is the only solution Conte has up front since Michy Batshuayi is still getting used to the Premier League football.
Finally, we have Liverpool, who were phenomenal at the start of the new season. They can probably say that they had the best signing of the summer, at least according to the performances Sadio Mane has been showing at the start of the his Liverpool adventure. Jurgen Klopp has had the toughest schedule at the start of the season, but he did not lose a single match against Arsenal, Chelsea, Leicester and Tottenham. The Reds are surely worth backing to finally win the Premier League title at the odds of 4/1. The second team from Liverpool, Everton, has also been playing very solid football at the start of the campaign. Romelu Lukaku is enjoying a terrific form, having bagged five goals so far in the competition. He’s priced up at 9/10 to be the league’s top scorer at the end of the season. The Toffees fans will surely back Everton to end in top six at 9/4.
When it comes to the relegation battle, we must mention West Ham United as the worst surprise of the season so far. It is hard to expect that the Croat manager Slaven Bilic can stay on West Ham’s bench much longer as the Hammers are currently sitting at the 18th position in the league standings, with no more than four points from seven opening rounds. The Hammers are 9/2 to be relegated, which is disastrous for such a strong team. We believe they can raise their form and even finish in top half at the end of the season. This kind of bet is priced up at 7/2 which certainly has the value.
Sunderland are the main relegation candidates. David Moyes’ men have won only two points so far in the competition, and they realistically have one of the weakest teams in the league. Jermaine Defoe is literally their only hope, but the defensive line and midfield are not worth the elite class of English football. You can back them to be relegated at 3/5 at this stage. Stoke City are not playing much better football either. The Potters did not have the toughest schedule at all at the start of the campaign, but they only managed to earn three points in seven matches. They are 4/1 to lose the Premier League status which has a huge value considering the current conditions.
One thing is for sure. This season of Premier League is going to be one of the most exciting ones in a decade. We have the big names of the world football, the big managers, the fun is literally guaranteed. There are seven teams which can regularly get involved in the title contest. There is just one trophy, and there are only four places which lead to Champions League. The battle for avoiding relegation will be equally entertaining, with the league’s newcomers Burnley, Hull and Middleborough doing pretty solid at the start of the new season.
