Since everyone's talking refs on the match thread, perhaps we're overdue have a ref thread. Be useful for just getting used to the names of refs that are constantly being slagged off, as well as those who get praised.

Here's your refs for the weekend games on the 21st of August

The EFL post these each week by the way

Carlisle v Orient - ROBERT MADLEY
Exeter v Bristol R - CHRIS SARGINSON
FGR v Crawley - LEIGH DOUGHTY
Harrogate v Barrow v TREVOR KETTLE
Hartlepool v Walsall - DECLAN BOURNE
Mansfield v Bradford - SCOTT OLDHAM
Northampton v Rochdale - CARL BROOK
Oldham v Colchester - SAMUEL BARROTT
Salford v Swindon - TOM REEVES
Scunthorpe v Sutton - ROSS JOYCE
Stevenage v Port Vale - WILL FINNIE SAM PURKISS
Tranmere v Newport - ROB LEWIS (with Mike Dean watching on his phone from Anfield)

Referees in their first EFL season
Referees in their second EFL season

A few names on there I recognise from mainly negative assessments. One of the Oldham not-brothers I think I remember being decent, not sure if it's James or Scott (or both)

Of the referees we've had so far these season, Paul Howard v Vale was pretty poor; Carl Brook reffed us v Swindon but listening on the radio I couldn't really make a proper judgmement, the Swindon fans didn't like him. Peter Wright reffed our opening day v Colchester and must have done a decent job since I can't remember anything contentious.

We had Darren Drysdale last weekend who I remember as a complete doyle in our former FL days. He didnt have a great game but was like Pierluigi Collina compared to National League refs. Is Trev Kettle still about?

Edit - just seen he's reffing Harrogate/Barrow. Good luck with that boys.

Is Rob Madeley the ref who slipped his dog one or something?

Drysdale I noticed is reffing in L1 this weekend.

Kettle is the longest serving referee working at this level too. Last game I remember him at last season he was awful, made some of the strangest decisions that both teams were infuriated by.

He's fucking terrible. How he hasn't been demoted to the depths of grassroots is beyond me.

Good luck Exeter and Gas fans tomorrow. Mr Sarginson does get most decisions correct, but has very little game management skills. The players know and act accordingly.

Carl Brook Jesus he was the clown who did our game with Tranmere at Vale last season. He was shocking.

Gives us a penalty that wasn’t a penalty
Disallows a good Vale goal
Sends Joyce off although often get those so won’t hold that one on him
Allows a Tranmere goal that was a foul on Pope
Disallows a good Tranmere goal
Gives Tranmere a penalty that wasn’t a penalty

They are just the ones that I recall!

Sam Allison is the clown we had v sunderland in the cup, notice he wound up Clough in their last game too.

as for the the ones mentioned, Sarginson gave an absolutely atrocious penalty to crewe against us, madeley gave a piss poor penalty for morecambe too.

kettle....don't need to say anything really do we?

Has Rebecca Welch reffed anyones games this season yet? Believe she was appointed to the list for the EFL for this season. She was actually one of the most impressive ones last season in our game with Harrogate (though I think both teams were clearly on their best behaviour) as she seemed intent on just letting the game flow and not act like it was all about her unlike say Kettle.

Not yet, I had a little look into that on the EFL site. Hope they just let her get stuck into the lower leagues instead of keeping her in reserve until they can give her a televised game because it makes them look good.

I think Trevor Kettle is a good ref. You can rely on him letting the game flow, trying to play advantage and only getting his cards out when absolutely necessary. No doubt about it. For 75 minutes one of the best at this level...the other fifteen however. :woot:

She was excellent in fairness.

She was appointed to and then taken off the Barrow game last weekend, she has had Covid quite bad and is still recovering.

As it is only our second season here for a long time I had to Google what Trevor Kettle looks like. The first picture of him on Google images was captioned "Petition to remove Trevor Kettle from football officiating."

That makes sense then. Hopefully she’s back soon.

Re Kettle for the longest time it seemed with Vale we always got away without being on the end of his most incompetent performances and often wondered what all the fuss was about. Then he took charge of our game at FGR and it was a complete clown show from start to finish with both teams on the end of some really bizarre calls. The only things he got right were our red cards incidentally. In a sense it’s good we won as some of the rather strong criticism from Vale fans after could have just been dismissed as bitterness rather than just outright bemusement at what we’d seen.

I’m hoping the fact we’ve got Madley will mean the standard of officiating will be of a higher than usual standard given that he was a premier league ref until recently. I hope.

Stevenage v Port Vale is now Sam Purkiss and Mike Dean will be doing the Liverpool v Burnley game.

Rob Lewis is a fussy referee, though not usually amongst the worst. From a Rovers perspective, agree with the comments on another thread about the dreadful Carl Boyeson. Of the two I've seen this season, live or on Ifollow, Carl Brook's decision making was totally random and the Red card for Merrie looked incredibly harsh, though our appeal failed. John Busby tried to let the game flow, there was a shout for a Rovers penalty which had some merit, but he didn't award.

Allison and Huxtable were two dreadful refs I remember from non-league (I'm sure there was one who was regularly worse than the lot, but thankfully can't see him on the list), and saw Kettle refereeing in the Championship about 15 years ago and he was awful then. Can only presume he's been demoted over time.

I see what you did there :)

We've had Bobby Madely a few times and he's pretty good. You can tell he used to officiate at a higher level.

If you want a laugh, type Trevor Kettle into the search bar of this site.

Was trying to remember when we last had him, looks like we had him for a couple of games in quick succession where I said of him 'a couple of matches reffed by Trevor Kettle where he probably had more possession than either team'.

Oh yeah, he made an absolute shambles of a few decisions when we played Colchester in March where he kept changing his mind. Because he's got the ball tucked under his arm while all this is going on I ended up saying he had more possession than us. One of John Yems' many comments that led to investigations for improper conduct was about Trevor Teapot.

He was one of the best we had last season. His premiership experience means he reads and controls the game better than the likes of Kettle and Sarginson. He also seems to have a better relationship with the players, whereas the two I mentioned come across as old style school teacher-like.

Trevor fucking kettle.
he should be in the dog and duck league.
Never seen so many inept refeering performances in my life as that clown when he comes to the Pirelli.
he literally takes a dislike to a team if the crowd get on his back - ignoring blatant fouls because someone in the crowd shouted abuse at him.
How he still has a licence is beyond me.

But wasn't he the one who had a bit of a shocker in the play-off final?

Certainly if you are a Newport fan although having seen one of the incidents after it was hardly an obvious error and there was no VAR to help him.

She's the best ref i've seen in a long time & was supposed to ref Barrow v Pools last week, but for whatever reason the was replaced by that cretin Drysdale.
I wish Trelford Mills was kicking about, now he was an utter twat.

Interesting strategy from Exeter and the Gas to neutralise the impact of Mr Sarginson. Have the game over within 25 minutes, so that anything he does is of little actual consequence. Well played gentlemen.

Thought Madley was OK today, not exceptional but didn't do anything especially wrong either. A lot seemed to go our way in the first half. I think that might have been more that the Orient players felt the penalty was harsh and started arguing with him and claiming for stuff a lot, which just made him less likely to give them the 50/50s, think a couple of the bookings they picked up were for dissent too. Second half though he must have had a nice cuppa and decided to be a bit more even-handed in which way he awarded the little decisions.
