So Fleetwood have retained 21 players and offered another 1 a deal. That’s a lot of players to have already signed in mid May!

No surprises in there, really.

Max Sanders hasn't shown enough in the time he's been here. Never been horrendous but Virtue and Erhahon have shown what we need in CM at L1 level.

Regan Poole will want to rightfully explore Championship options and has never let us down despite receiving offers for him over the last year or so. We could have cashed in for a decent sum but he's been excellent for us and an important player.

Joe Walsh is unfortunately made of glass but a Rolls-Royce of a defender when fit. 40 odd league appearances in three years is a poor return and a wage that would be better spent elsewhere, especially with Montsma out for the next year and Jackson/Bishop being unpredictable with their availability.

22 under contract (with one accepted a new deal) but 8 or so (9 including the new contract for Cann) are young lads who'll be back out on loan, Monstma is out for more than a year and Adelakun and Vernam will leave.

Be a shame to lose Sean Roughan but we'll get compensation for him if he does leave because he's only 20. Not sure he'd gain anything from not signing a new deal here to be honest, he's going to get a decent amount of minutes here and I'm not sure he'll get that anywhere else.

So that leaves us with the following, excluding those offered deals. Good amount in terms of numbers but a lot of younger players. No one over 30.

Keepers
Jordan Wright (24)
Sam Long (20)

Defenders
Adam Jackson (29)
Paudie O’Connor (25)
Lewis Montsma (25) Out injuried for year
TJ Eyoma (23)
Jay Benn (21)
Elicha Ahui (19)
MJ Kamara (17)

Midfielders
Hakeeb Adelakun (27)
Charles Vernam (26)
Ted Bishop (26)
Lasse Sorensen (23)
Ethan Erhahon (22)
Morgan Worsfold-Gregg (19)
Oisin Gallagher (18)

Forwards
Danny Mandroiu (24)
Ben House (23)
Charley Kendall (22)
Dylan Duffy (20)
Jovon Makama (19)
Freddie Draper
(18)

Assuming we'll go for another loan keeper
We have 3 central defenders excluding Montsma who is out for a year. Other defenders are young and on loan in Ireland.

Assuming we will look to get rid of Adelakun and Vernam. Who knows on Bishop. More bodies needed, Erhahon a great start in Jan, but others are youth in midfield.

Thin up front too. Can't see Draper and potentially others being directly involved.

Hopefully an exciting summer!

Here’s ours. Danny Mayor would improve any team in this league but I can see him going to Wrexham. Conor Grant will do a job for anyone in this league also.

Jephcott could be worth a punt for someone but didn’t exactly set L2 alight with Swindon this season.

James Bolton is a top defender but just can’t stay fit. Otherwise he’d of got a deal here.

Regan Poole is exactly the sort of player we should be going for. From South Wales as well so not to far from home.

Us:

Of those leaving:

Curtis Thompson (DM) - great player, terrible injury record. But if you can keep him fit, would be great for any L2 club, or up to mid-tier L1.

Nick Freeman (AM) - been with us for a long time, a quality player but just never managed to make a starting berth his own - although strangely last season he made the most number of apps (but not starts) of anyone. But fair enough if he wants to move on, will be a cracking signing for an L2 club and a decent one for a lower-half L1 side.

Lewis Wing (AM) - probably thinks he's better than us and to be fair maybe he is. May have stayed had we got promoted back to the Champ but we'll never know. Anyway, scores a decent amount for a centre mid, I'm guessing he's already got a better deal lined up.

Daryl Horgan (AM) - bit of a luxury player this one, though not necessarily in a negative sense - but he's just not a grafter or a scrapper, which was generally required of all Wycombe players under Ainsworth, even attacking ones at times. But he was on Champ wages, and didn't justify them - we even sent him on loan to Stevenage and he barely got a start there, although in fairness maybe that was Evans not wanting to upset a winning side. Not a terrible signing if you get him, but not great either.

The others are mostly dev squad players.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Lewis Wing linked with us in the coming days. Played under Warne before and was very complimentary of his performance against us at your place - he was very good that day!

The scale of our rebuild is all there to see - we’ve essentially vetoed our entire u21 squad, a lot of our u18 squad and cut our cloth with our experienced CBs who were bit part players this season - Chester, great when he played but always injured. Davies, substantial drop off in performances from last season. Stearman, essentially retired halfway through the season.

Forsyth signs on for a further year - making it number 11 at Derby. He’s been excellent this season, on the whole, doubtful he will be used as heavily next season but very good cover at both CB and LB.

Where is the FGR list then - surely that’s the one we’re all waiting for, all those rough diamonds…

Ha yeah, the list everyone is waiting for to grab some top talents.

Big Dunc is off scouting in Scotland this week, says he’ll sort out the retained list after meeting the board to discuss the budget when he gets back.

We’ve got quite a few players who were shipped out on loan in January before appointing our current management team so working out if any might fit into their plans/be worth offering contracts could take a bit more time, especially given we don’t have a much League 2 know how amongst our coaching staff.

Is Regan Hendry out of contract? We had him on loan and some suggestion might like to sign him up, though whether he’d want to stay at Tranmere is arguable.

I think he is yeah. No idea why we loaned him out, one of many poor decisions in January, quality player.

Ours will be published today but the local rag has come out with the likeliest scenario:

Released
Clark Robertson - already confirmed by the player himself. Good enough at this level but terrible injury record.

Ryan Tunnicliffe - had a bit of a renaissance under Mousinho, but not done enough in 3 years to warrant a new contract. Would be a decent addition for a lower League One or upwardly mobile League Two team.

Michael Jacobs - obviously a classy performer who can unlock defences at this level. Constant injury problems though and not getting any younger.

Louis Thompson - probably the unluckiest player on our books to be released. It's thought that we have too many similar midfielders and Mousinho is looking for more forward-thinking midfielders. Would be an excellent signing for a League One team looking for a defensive midfielder, but has had injury problems historically.

Kieron Freeman - fell out of favour very quickly under Cowley and Mousinho didn't fancy him either. Probably looking at League Two.

Jayden Reid - been with us for two years and has been out the whole time with two serious knee injuries. Hopefully a change of club will change his luck.

Jay Mingi - All-action midfielder but again, we have too many similar players in midfield. Still young and we could end up regretting letting him go. Time will tell.

Alfie Bridgman and Dan Gifford - youngsters who haven't broken through. Will likely head to non-league.

Unknown
Ronan Curtis - He will be in rehab until end of 2023, so we may offer him some sort of contract, but he may find better elsewhere. Mousinho did seem to have revitalised him before his bad injury though, so he may rate him enough to give him a contract. If not, he should have plenty of takers in this league. Quality when played correctly.

Retained
Josh Oluwayemi - bit of a surprise this. Young keeper who hasn't looked great when called upon. The club rate him though so have extended him for another year.

Harry Jewitt-White - highly rated youngster who will be given more time to stake a claim.

Connor Ogilvie - dependable left back who can also operate centrally. 12-month option will be actioned.

Of the five loanees we finished with, we may make bids to sign keeper Matt Macey from Luton and centre back Di'shon Bernard from Man United who both impressed. We are likely to sever ties with Ipswich's Joe Pigott, Blackpool's Owen Dale and the disappointing Dane Scarlett of Spurs.

I'd take Crackers back. Apperently we were interested last year. In a different role to when he was first here, he could be a real asset. Although there does seem to be a feeling amongst the fan base that we shouldn't be signing any more players with history of injuries.

Well, he certainly has that history. Maybe a pay-as-you play deal? You may get 15-20 games out of him.

Bridgman seemed to be a part of your first team plans last summer, played a lot of pre-season and scored some goals before being shipped out on loan. Has he really been given the chance to break through properly?

He did get a lot of pre-season games but that was mainly due to the fact that we had zero first-team strikers until one week before the season started.

There's always plenty of gnashing of teeth from our fans when promising youngsters are released. And yet very few seem to come back and bite us on the arse. He will have been assessed while out on loan and a decision made based on that.

Forgot to mention above that we are also trying to ship out under-contract Denver Hume and Reeco Hackett-Fairchild for small fees. We may get some interest. Reeco has been looked at by a few clubs previously and Hume may have likers from his time at Sunderland. Hume got injured immediately after signing and has struggled to get in the team ever since. Only seems to fit as a wing back in a 3-5-2 formation. Good crosser if he gets a chance.

Regan Poole is exactly the sort of player we should be going for. From South Wales as well so not to far from home.
QPR, Sunderland (tried to sign him last season) and Blackburn are three Championship sides who like him.

I'd probably still take Jacobs back tbh, my favourite ever academy prospect, I don't think even Toney had the talent he had when he was a teenager (though obviously wrong in hindsight considering the latter's career).

Our retained list showed zero surprises. The bulk of a squad is under contract or signed up to big deals next season, including longer contracts for Guthrie who Wrexham had a rejected bid for last year, which is both good and bad. A lot of consistency going in rather than a massive turnover which is the opposite of the last few years we've gone up, but the bulk of a success has come from have a deep fairly level squad without obvious gaps in quality which means on the other hand that we've got limited options to reinforce and improve to a League one level.

Only first-teamer who isn't under contract and offered is Koiki - if he hadn't been injured for 6 months now he might have attracted interest from one or two here because of his pace as full-back. I think as everyone else signed up a few months ago, it might suggest he was reluctant to sign back up with the interest shown in him, but I think the 6 month injury may put off his suitors now. King who has been offered terms was great when called upon this year, and would still be backup to Burge, I guess if someone in League 2 comes forward to ask him to be number one keeper who might be tempted, as he's good enough for that level. Dyche is still a teenager and 3rd/4th choice and any compensation offered I think will put others off, so 90% sure he'll sign up.

As for the released, there is nobody that anyone in this League or higher will be interested in.
David Norman - Came here on a free mid-season basically on non-contract terms to cover the 13 long injury list and the 3 centerbacks we had out injured. Great pass for a CB, but I think i'd have doubts he knows how to defend well enough for the English professional Leagues. Maybe non-league will give him a punt, Morecambe sniffed at him before we were interested in.

Josh Harrop - Same as Norman in terms on basically being paid nothing, but equally got 3 minutes football from about 5 months in the club. Seemed to think at the end of year awards his injuries are finally sorted, so maybe someone will take a gamble on him... bit of a risky one.

Jonny Maxted - Relegated to 3rd choice keeper and been out for a while due to personal reasons.

Paul Osew - Same as Normal and Harrop as coming in on tiny wages to put himself in the shop window mid-season to cover the injury crisis. Didn't play enough to get an accruate read on, but I think the one most likely to be worth a League 2 clubs interest.

Miguel Ngwa, Jack Connor, Liam Cross - All academy players on 1st year professoinal contracts who played in the Papa Johns. Need to get some regular football at non-league level to try and make it back up if they want to be pros.

We have 18 signed up now - the gaps will be the two loanees going back in Bowie and Leonard at CM and RW that will need League One quality, and also Eppiah theoretically (because he was injured and never really played), which means there's probably 3 main targets we'll need to go out and get before the teams finished.

Isn’t Mitov a pretty useful keeper unless mixing him up with someone else?

Departing the club at the conclusion of their contract on 30/06/23: Greg Taylor, Liam O’Neil, Dimitar Mitov, Harvey Knibbs, Joe Ironside, Sam Smith, Shilow Tracey, George Williams, Lloyd Jones, Ben Worman
Players offered a new contract at the conclusion of their contract on 30/06/23: Ryan Bennett, Harrison Dunk, Paul Digby, George Thomas, Fejiri Okenabirhie
Player under contract beyond 30/06/23: Will Mannion, James Holden, Liam Bennett, Jubril Okedina, Zeno Ibsen Rossi, Michael Morrison, Mamadou Jobe, Brandon Haunstrup, Adam May, Lewis Simper, Jack Lankester James Brophy, Saikou Janneh
U21s under contract: Harvey Beckett, Saleem Akanbi, Glenn McConnell, Kai Yearn, Louis Chadwick
Loans to Return to Parent Clubs at the end of the season: Steve Seddon, Conor McGrandles

Massive summer ahead for us. Basically need to find a whole new attack, a new goalkeeper, and replace Jones and potentially Ryan Bennett. 5 of those players released are good enough to interest other League 1 clubs.

Mitov can make outstanding performances like Newcastle away, but overall he's a pretty standard keeper that's good enough for a lower league 1 team. I know some U's fans thought we could get better but personally I thought we should keep him and concentrate on rebuilding other parts of the squad.

He wants to play for the Bulgarian national team so perhaps wants a chance to get in the spot light at a bigger club.

Didn't start this season very well, was fine when he came back in for the last half a dozen or so games though.

Definite potential there to play in the Championship but needs a good GK coach to work on his weaknesses. We've "released" him but as with a few others on that list it's more a case of they've told us they're going. Mitov will end up at a top 10 L1 team I reckon.
