Woke up to this news this morning and genuinely devastated.

Former Port Vale, Macclesfield and Wigan right back has tragically lost a battle with cancer aged only 40.

Carragher was captain during Port Vale's last trophy win in 2001 and the last Potteries Derby which saw Vale win 1-0. Carragher was a fans favourite and top pro playing with his heart on his sleeve making nearly 200 appearances for the Valiants between 1997-2003.

RIP young man, tonight we will remember you.

Truly terrible news made even more sad with him being so young.

A true professional and a fantastic captain who got the best out of his team-mates. It is no surprise that our more successful times of our recent past came with Matty as our leader on the pitch.

RIP

Matty's time was a few years before I started following Wigan regularly but I know he was a shining light in a very dark era for the club just before Uncle Dave came along and saved us. Came through the Latics School of Excellence and made 145 appearances for the first team. Not often you see that anymore at our club. 40 is simply no age to go! RIP!

I couldn't believe it when I heard the sad news. I'll not forget him lifting the trophy in Cardiff. A great player in his day.
