Given he will break Bobby Charlton's goal scoring record where does he stand among the top England strikers?

Many will probably quite rightly point to his disappointing tournament scoring record and say that marks him down but he has been very consistent (when others haven't) in qualifying.

It is a shame we have not see the best of Rooney when it really matters (since 2004) for various reasons and I feel whilst you have to credit him for breaking the record there are others who could be considered greater.

On talent I agree with Joe. But he isn't better than Bobby Charlton IMO. Wayne is simply gifted; he knows this and he acts like an arrogant little sod at times. It's baffling how he doesn't score at tournaments, though it might be because the teams are slightly more challenging to beat than San Marinon and Moldova. If he put more effort in then he could've become one of the best strikers in the world to be honest.

Top 10 probably, with Jimmy Greaves a long, long way ahead at the top as the best English striker ever.

For me he'll be one that easily had the pottential to be the best English striker ever, but suffered due to a number of reasons. His versatility and willingness to play anywhere for the team particularly at club level never really gave him that stable/consistent platform to develop and change his game as he aged. These things can mess with a player's natural instincts, evident in the way he infuriatingly keeps dropping deep for United.

It's depressing that an average player such as Wayne Rooney is going to break the record, thanks to all these goals against crap teams like San Marino, Lithuania, and Andorra.

I wouldn't have even started him today. If he wants it he can earn is against a proper team. I don't think he'll get the goals today anyway tbh.

170 goals for Manchester United, and won several titles because of him. Definitely an average player.

In the Premier League, its different. They are all professional players.

I would understand why people don't want him to break the record for England because as you said, its thanks to San Marino and Moldova, but to say he is an average player in his prime is idiotic. He's always been an excellent player (up until last year anyways) and the goals he scored for Manchester United sums it up.

Rooney will have a funny legacy when he finishes. He'll probably be Manoo and Englands top scorer, yet won't be loved or missed by those fans. It appears to me that he is thought of as a decent player who had a good career but won't be held as one of the greats. Strange.

but he was/is pretty useless vs continental / bigger teams.

29 goals in 10 Champions league seasons with ManU? that's not even 3 goals per season.

only one goal at world cups? nearly every international footballer has scored a goal at a world cup (expect Lampard of course)

Not a bad record by any stretch, that's only one off the likes of Kaka and Eto'o, having played a similar amount of games.

Do you have a real love for Rooney though, like perhaps watching Ronaldo or Cantona did for Man Utd?

I like Rooney but have no loyalty towards him. He'll be a United legend but not a fan favourite like Solskjaer.

He's lived off this 'Roonaldo' reputation he got when he was a kid, he's not been anything special for England, he's scored against a shite teams and never done it when we really needed him. Not world class, hasn't been for a while.

Would rather have Kane and Sturridge starting over him.

I don't know the answer but does anyone know how many times he's scored over 20 goals in a Premier League season?

Twice. 2009-10 and 2011-12.

I think twice. Remember reading something about how United won the title 5 times in 7 years with Rooney hitting 20+ in the two non-title winning years. I never checked the accuracy of the claim (I didn't really care) but it sounds plausible.

Yeah I get the feeling there wont be chants about him long after he retires unlike how they chant for Keane or Cantona now and again. And if Rooney is regarded less than Solskaer, that really is a kick in the teeth.

He'll go down a great, and rightly so. Yes, people will throw the lack of success at him, but then you can say that for every player since 1966. He's our main man and as such will take the majority of the criticism.

He's going to be the leading goalscorer of his country before his 30th birthday. Poor / average players don't reach those levels.

Fucking local hero

Podolski scored only one international goal less as Rooney, but more at world cups (5) and only one less at euros (4)

and Podolski is for sure not one of the greats who are playing this game

He's also played about twenty more times.

Not too sure why you are using German players in a discussion as to whether or not Wayne Rooney will be an England great?
