Jeez, final whistle has barely gone on their game with Lincoln and they announce he's gone. Not all that surprising I suppose, been coming for a while.

So, who's coming in to replace him then?

Mark Cooper. Stale Mince to take the hit and pay off his contract after you get HUMILIATED at Newport, thereby paving the way for the Slade-esque TRIUMPHANT RETURN of Hockaday :2thumb:

Who is going to talk Cambridge Utd down now after every time they get beat?

The bloke did my job for me, so you'll be hearing more from me more often now Vanni.

Mr Cowley of course linked with every other so why not this one too.
Apparently got rid of earlier in the week but asked to do tonight's game.

I was told mid game it was happening, should have posted, mate works for Lincoln and explained.

Obviously delighted he’s gone. I know Vanni and others disagree but I’d have sacked him after the Luton debacle when we were smashed and miles off the pace anyway. Vanni would never have appointed him in the first place and others would have sacked him last season. He had to go at some point.

I didn’t dislike the “Derry-type” appointment - a young manager trying to make his mark in the game suits me fine (see Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Kevin Nolan for recent successful equivalents). It’s just Derry himself is a muppet.

I wouldn’t hesitate in going for a similar type of manager again. The last thing I want is a journeyman manager who plays crap football, like a Graham Westley. That’s not what we need in my opinion.

I haven’t looked at who is available at the moment but aside from a player turning their hand to management, I wouldn’t object to looking at the Conference for someone young and hungry. Dover, Maidstone, Sutton, Aldershot etc all seem to have done well recently though I know none of their managers. But an appointment of that ilk could possibly work.

Either way, we won’t rush it and therefore I’m delighted as we’re more likely to get it right. We have a 12 point gap to the relegation spots so barring some mega collapse we should be safe even if Dunne and Bonner really do screw it up.

Dover's manager is a teacher and they have a Chairman bumping up their playing budget very nicely. Don't be fooled by 'little, plucky, part time Dover'. Maidstone would probably drive their manager to you because they're having a right shitter at the minute. Waddock doesn't want to leave Aldershot with them well placed and Doswell comes across as Mr. Sutton. From memory, he paid for their 3G pitch.

Askey, at Macclesfield, is probably one worth a look at but he seems to have had multiple chances to leave them and never has.

I read on Twitter that he was told a few days before the game his services were no longer required. He was then asked to manage the Lincoln game but then go after it.

Be careful what you wish for is all I can say. I remember we sacked Mick Wadsworth when we were an established mid table L1 side. We thought the football was crap and hadn't scored at home for 7 games but were winning away quite often. Been downhill ever since.

Yeah as I say I don’t know much about them, but those are the sorts of managers I’d be interested in looking at - managers like Nathan Jones, Kevin Nolan and Danny Cowley rather than Steve Evans, Gareth Ainsworth or Keith Curle.

Joe Dunne would be the obvious long term appointment under the approach taken since we got back in the league, which was already developing in the early Jez/Money era. He's got the job until May. I'm sure he was seen as a potential no 1 down the line when first appointed. The next 15 matches will be a chance for him to show he has the range of tactical knowledge and man management skills to do the job as he emerges from Derry's shadow. I'm yet to be convinced but ready to offer full support.

I'm less than thrilled with the usual suspects being paraded by the bookies and struggle to identify a Cowley Mk2 that fits the bill in the Conference. Luke Garrard is probably a bit too green and most of the others with form are long standing Conference stalwarts. Waddock might be tempted by the opportunity properly sold, especially as we're talking about an end of season appointment. I'd hope we're exploring what might tempt the likes of Michel Appleton (if only because Colin Appleton, with similar Foxes connections, was my favourite ever manager) away from his assistant role at Leicester but suspect his sights are set higher. Jim Bentley is probably too NW focussed but he's the L2 manager I have most respect for.

My main response to recent developments is respect for the management skills of our emerging board under Paul Barry's ownership and influence. There was a mess (financial and managerial in its widest sense) and it seems to being sorted in the right sort of way. I'd have been worried if I'd seen anything but Derry out in a managed way well before his contract was up and Jez moved completely out of the football operation.

I now look forward to an interesting wind down to the season, with enough to play for from players and manager to give them some focus.

I hope Joe Dunne does well for Cambridge - I think he showed the most potential of all of our internal appointments over recent years but his hands were tied massively as the budget was being slashed and he inherited a few players who were tied into big contracts that he couldn't shift. When it worked, we played some lovely football under him and in his one full season in charge we never even looked close to going down which was as good a season as we had for the last few years we were in League One.

Dunne has been part of two massively underachieving managerial teams now, I'd have got rid of him as well to be honest but I certainly want him nowhere near the permanent position, not as assistant and definitely not as manager.

We don't need to rush IMO, there aren't many on the carousel that look appealing at all outside of Phil Brown who is probably too far above us, not the sort of guy our board would want to deal with, and would do little to reunite the fan base. If we haven't already we should be thoroughly scouting the lower leagues for options, different type of risk but there's got to be someone half decent there we can spot and tempt.

Yeah no need to rush, especially if we can pick up a couple of points in the next two games. My guess is that we'll probably get someone in at the end of the season. Absolutely no idea who I'd want, my initial thought was Phil Brown, and I'd be pretty happy with that, but I like the idea of taking someone from non league and building a club around them like Lincoln have done with Cowley

I should have replied earlier but I've got loads on my mind right now so I'm having a bit of trouble remembering easy stuff like replying to a post :ffs:
Anyway, Laker said I wouldn't have given the job to Derry in the first place, and that's not strictly correct. I was well aware of what the Notts fans were saying at the time, but at the time I didn't think that was reason enough to not give him the job. I like to see things for myself rather than take somebody else's word for it. And a manager failing at one club doesn't necessarily mean he'll be always be a failure.

So I would have given him the job, but would've sacked him after his first six or so months on charge, as to me it was pretty clear what his football philosophy was all about - keep it tight/do not take too many risks/a draw is better than a loss etc etc - and that's not good enough to me. I also thought he relied too much on the other play off challengers dropping points, and this was perhaps the biggest reason I wanted him gone. I always assume the other sides in the mix are going to win their matches so my side needs to win theirs.

Now a word on some comments re. Dunne. IMO, it's plain wrong to say he is/ or was part of the problem because all the assistant manager does is to implement what the manager has planned, and an assistant has got absolutely no input on tactics and team selection and so on. I'm not saying Dunne is the answer but I'm sure he wasn't the one to blame for the way we set up and general game plan.

Exactly the same situation we have with Paul Wilkinson, I hope. Rumour was that they were paired together by Fenty and didn’t actually get on. We’ll see what he can do in temporary charge, and whether the players see him as a different person.

Although he apparently was the one who recommended shit like Sam Kelly so I have no idea.
