In my opinion it's the 5th best city in the UK. Enjoy your trip.

Says the one from Mansfield :O

Dont go to Meadowhall, there really isn't that much to do except drink or go into the countryside for a walk. For a city so big there is a shocking lack of things to do.

If you can I'd honestly just get yourself into the countryside, pub lunch etc.

Blimey. Any partic recommendations for a pub lunch then?

I had my eye on Kelham Island Museum, which has a very high aggregated score on Tripadvisor.

I heard they do a nice line in steel cutlery up there. Try and get yourself on a tour of one of the places that makes that stuff. You've probably left it too late to book now, such is the demand.

Some good real ale pubs to get pissed in. That's the only reason I'd ever go really.

Get yourself out of there ASAP, first train south to Chesterfield for a few quid. Booming historic market town of the North. (of Derbyshire).

If you head to st pauls which is next to the peace gardens there is a variety of tidy restaurants or a 2 min walk further into town there is leopold square which also has nice restaurants and bars. But these areas are the most expensive in the city so if your a tight bastard these should be avoided. Other than that head up west street there is also plenty of restaurants on there too. As for boozing what type of pub are you after?

Had a mate move down to Rotherham and I went there and Sheffield a few times, christ they were depressing places. He moved back to Dundee, thats how bad it got for him! :D

I'll be coming from Oxford, so I assume money will be no object. Where can I get my pounds converted into shillings?

A nice, sit-down, talk-to-your-mates, so-how-have-you-been type of pub would be good, rather than one of these Apprentice candidates', All Bar One, sambukas-all-round, smashed-my-sales-targets-LAD types.

There's a place for that in Attercliffe.

A couple of shitholes which i always find entertaining are. The norfolk arms on dixon lane, the tap and barrell and the hen and chicks are all very eventful places. A couple more pubs that will probably suit you better in the afternoon are the graduate, the museum. Later on at night the besemer or maggie mays can be a cracking laugh. Other than that head up division street or west street there are dozens of boozers so im sure you will find what your looking for.

On a more serious note Matthew, some of my favourites haunts were Bungalows and Bears, Devonshire Cat and the Old House. All within a few minutes walk of each other and good selections of proper beers.

The city centre is nice enough for a wander around, you can use the tram service, and the botanical gardens are a pleasant place to go for a walk if the weather's nice.

Does the £5 round bar still exist? A bottle of beer, a Jaegerbomb, a shot & a spirit and mixer for a fiver.

Health and Safety must have shut it down by now.

You wouldn't think it reading this thread but there is so much more to Sheffield than drinking. Take a stroll round the former industrial strongholds where the once proud wheels of British industry grinded out the very best steel this small world has ever seen, neglected relics of empire that make the urban decay of Detroit look like nothing more than an overgrown front lawn. Take in the sites of the city's many listed buildings, including the Lyceum (spiritual home of pantomime), the Abbeydale industrial hamlet (see how shit was crafted back in the day), Sheffield town hall (one of the best seats of local government in the entire country), and bob yourself down the the Park Hill flats, the finest example of a concrete jungle council estate outside the great city of London. You like sports? check in on the Crucible theatre mate, home of world snooker, call in on the Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, home to one of only 9 olympic size swimming pools in the UK and Europe's deepest diving pool. If all this is too much then take in a steady evening at Valley Centertainment my friend, go see a Sheffield Steelers ice hockey game at the arena, or a film at the multiplex followed by something to eat at one of the many eateries in the vicinity, unless you're feeling really adventurous, in which case jump in a taxi and head for Leopold Square and enjoy a curry at Aagrah, recently voted best restaurant in the British curry awards.
