Bit of a weird move that, thought Plymouth had definitely improved last season.

Will be interesting to see who goes there now.

No loss to Plymouth I don't think. Never rated him.

Surprising. Thought he got Plymouth competiive again in L2 last season. Thought he would be looking to push on now.

He did very well to keep us up the season he came in then very little to suggest he was the right man to take us forward. We did improve every season under him but I do feel we should have done better than we did given our budget and the players we had, at our best we looked like genuine challengers but we saw that best far too infrequently and he never inspired any confidence when we were out of form. His flaws were obvious, a total inability to motivate the players or to change a game if things weren't working. It's been over two years since we last came from behind to win, that simply is not good enough. He was pretty good with signing players, most of his additions did well, although he did always look to rectify problems with player additions rather than changes elsewhere. Next season looks like it may be more competitive than last where we only just scraped into seventh thanks to Luton's poor form, we'll have to be better and I never had confidence that Sheridan would be able to deliver that improvement. I'm fairly happy with this, obvously a great deal depends on who we get in but I think this will be good for us, especially as so many fans had totally lost faith in him after the abysmal performances in the play offs, anything other than a great start would have likely led to the atmosphere becoming quite unpleasant.

Surprised at that and the timing, he'd definitely improved Plymouth from when he took over. Thought he should have done another season as I fancy Plymouth to have a crack at automatic next season, who's the front runners for the job?

Still did well for them. They were on the brink when he took over and he saved them, stabalised them and turned them into promotion contenders. I think the reason their fans in majority wanted him to go is just them being unrealistic about what they should be achieving in a short space of time.

It'll be interesting to see who they get in to replace Sheridan. I'd imagine Warnock will be favourite.

Not a big surprise. I'm sure he'll find an opportunity at this level fairly soon, despite Argyle fans being underwhelmed with his abilities. I'll be more surprised if they don't already have a replacement in mind if not lined up.

Seems to be down to family reasons and a mutual agreement.

Plymouth fans don't seem too bothered he has gone - feeling is he has taken the Pilgrims as far as he could.

It's true that we did expect better but I think that and us largely wanting him gone is down to us at times seeing what we could have been under Sheridan only to, just as often, see us look like a shadow of that side, one far more suited to relegation than promotion. I think his time here will be remembered as frustrating more than anything else, how we could play like we did, for example, at Shrewsbury on the final day only to completely fail to turn up in both play off games against Wycombe. Seeing what we could achieve when things went right, along with the players we had and what the budget appears to have been I don't think it's too unrealistic to say we could have been promoted this season, Sheridan didn't manage that. Next season doesn't look like being less competitive, there's no reason to believe Sheridan would have done any better.

Darren Ferguson might be a good choice for Plymouth. Dave Hockaday 14/1 :fl:

Might stick a bit on Westley. There was a little rumour doing the rounds recently wasn't there?

Another option that will be looked at is Wotton taking on the managers job on the condition that Warnock takes on the DoF role with the responsibility of supporting Paul in that role.

Warnock as a DoF would be stupid, he's pretty much the exact opposite of what you want from one.

Yeah I think it was a big sticking point with the fans that he commuted to Plymouth from Manchester only taking two or three training sessions per week, and clearly his heart wasn't really in managing a club down south so probably the best thing for both parties.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying he's a bad manager but he's not the type to get you promoted without money or a team of good players. Two things he had at Chesterfield. As soon as they went, so did he. Plymouth are a big club for this league and I think could have a better manager than him.

Should definitely appoint Holloway. The one liners twice a season when we play them will be banterous (annoying every week though)

I thank him for keeping us up in his first season and stabalising the club but he's not the man to take us forward, we need a manager who embraces the club and invests in our youth, and we need a manager who doesn't take a couple training sessions a week due to commuting between Leeds and Plymouth.

Even if we were promoted through the play offs, there's doubt to whether he would have stayed. I do wish him luck for the future and I'll look back on his tenure as neither a big success, nor a failure, it could have been so much different if we weren't so pathetic in the play offs.

If I'm honest, I think more people would be disappointed with the news if there was some sort of relationship between Sheridan and the fans, there's just never been a connection, in fact, it's been pretty hostile at times this season with the fans slandering the manager and the manager slandering the fans.

Ian Holloway is the bookies front runner, we played the best football I've ever seen us play under him, 4th in the championship, I know some wouldn't, but I'd probably be able to forgive him for the lies and money grabbing if he issued a sincere apology and committed himself to the club.

I was listening to Holloway on the radio, he sounds like he's bursting to get back into the game.

I can agree with that one, Plymouth looked bloody awful, am guessing they only got into top 7 because outside top 5 the rest were terrible also. totally out of depth in the play-off games.

Looked more a side who'd slide than push on next season, maybe the change will allow them to push on.

Hmm, not sure Dave.

When we've been on our game this season (Pompey home, Exeter both games, Cheltenham both games, Dagenham home, Shrewsbury away etc) we've been simply outstanding and unbeatable, but when we've been bad (e.g. when we came up there) we've been absolutely awful.

Inconsistency has been a major problem this season.

I, and most fans, believe that with the side we had, we should have finished higher than 7th, Sheridan is a great manager when it comes to picking out a player, but when it comes to tactics and motivation, he falls short.

then should he maybe have been moved upstairs to a DOF role for a new guy?

Fans have been saying that all season, he'd make a fine DOF, but regardless, he doesn't want to be in Plymouth. That was the other issue, his constant commuting between Leeds in Plymouth meaning he'd only take a couple of training sessions a week.

yep it seems strange to take that job if he stays in Leeds.

oh well he has at least made the decision early.
