Here we go again, with a short trip over to our Essex friends across the water. My overwhelming feeling is that we're going to have a bit of a sticky start to the season, and a game against this lot is generally pretty tough.

I can see Konchesky getting a bit of a run around against McGlashan, but hopefully his end product is still missing. In other battles on the pitch, Coker vs Jackson should be entertaining on the wing, as will Quigley vs Barrett and Ranger (if fit) against our centre halves.

Interesting to see how Southend will perform this season what with their two brightest talents from last season now departed (Payne and Bentley), while we've only (so far) lost one key player in John Egan, although that doesn't account for our pre-season injury list.

I would expect us to line up:

Nelson
Jackson - Oshilaja - Ehmer - Konchesky
Wright
Knott - Hessenthaler
Dack
Quigley - McDonald
Hadler, Byrne, Donnelly, Osadebe, Oldaker, List and Cundle making up a pretty weak bench.

Hopefully we'll get a couple in this week to bolster the squad a little while we wait for the injured to get back. Add Wagstaff, Garmston, Morris and Lee Martin into that squad and it looks pretty sound, so to lose 4 first teamers before a ball is kicked in anger is a bit shit really.

I would probably take a draw.

Ranger is out. Probably won't see him for 3 weeks. McGlashan took a knock Saturday but could be fit. I expect us to line up

Oxley
Demetriou Thompson Barrett Coker
McGlashan Leonard Atkinson McLaughlin
Cox Mooney

Additions are still needed

I'll go for another 1-1 steady draw

Forgot you had Simon Cox. Decent addition that, remember him and Billy Paynter tearing us apart for Swindon and they dicked us 5-0. Hopefully he's shit now

I can't remember the time I felt less anticipation for a new season. Massive (serious) injury list, a totally uninspiring pre-season, combined with our car crash of an end to last season has left me feeling a great deal of ennui regarding 2016/17.

A resounding Gills win would perk me up immeasurably, but I fear we might be on the end of a narrow defeat and that may be a feature of a long, hard season.

2-1 the Shrimpers.

When all are fit we have a stronger squad than last year.
I reckon the signings of Oshilaja, Wagstaff and JET in particular are as good as pretty much any additions in this division this year.
I will go for a narrow win in an entertaining game.

Sounds like we rode our luck in the first half despite the ball going through Nelson for the Southend goal. Second half much better and took our chances.

Great turn out too, part two on Tuesday night

Never seen a team dominate like that then concede a well worked goal tbf then go to absolute shit. That was embarrassing

Excellent first 30, appalling last 60. How can we go from playing so nicely to that shambles?

Southend the better team for 1st half hour, went ahead through a mistake by Nelson, which he made up for a couple of minutes later with a decent save, when our equaliser went in from that point only looked like there was going to be one winner

Agree that he looks like he's bulked up a bit, especially when you compare how he looks in that long run forward for the 3rd with how he looked 1st game of last season vs Sheffield United. Thought he was poor first half though, looked scared to get involved, although doubled up well with Konchesky on McGlashan. He was fantastic in the second half, cracking engine and he is quick for a lanky lad.
