Just a minor tech question that really bugs me.

I have watched plenty of boring halves at matches were absolutley nothing has happened, no injuries, no ball out of play for more than a few seconds, no goals etc. etc. Yet there is always some 'added time' of at least a minute put up on the fourth officals board, I cannot recall an instance where the ref just blew on the 45 minute mark.

Is 'added time' now the norm, if so, when did the rule change regarding the duration of a game occur, if not, where do they get this added time from?

Not sure what the official answer is re normality but I've Watched a few up here (Scotland) where the first half has finished exactly on 45. Second halfs tend to have substitutions so you will have TAO for those (30 seconds for each one I believe).

You need to come to Donny then plenty of half times without added minutes

Could be for any of the below reasons, perhaps a couple of bookings were made or the ref spotted some time wasting etc.

Law 7 - The Duration of the Match

Allowance for time lost

Allowance is made by the referee in each half for all time lost in that half through:
  • substitutions
  • assessment and/or removal of injured players
  • wasting time
  • disciplinary sanctions
  • stoppages for drinks or other medical reasons permitted by competition rules
  • any other cause, including any significant delay to a restart (e.g. goal celebrations)
The fourth official indicates the minimum additional time decided by the referee at the end of the final minute of each half. The additional time may be increased by the referee but not reduced.
The referee must not compensate for a timekeeping error during the first half by changing the length of the second half.

I've seen it a couple of times although I agree it's pretty rare.

Like the above poster though, I imagine its things like yellow cards, having a talking to with the player if not card, a few goal kicks etc

I've seen it happen a lot more with European fixtures than domestic ones for what it's worth, maybe the refs at that level are far stricter in that regard.

A good answer to the question, but can anybody explain why all those variable additions seem to nearly always add up to four minutes..?

I might run a stopwatch on the next live match I watch on TV and see just how every stoppage listed above tots up. I know.... it might seem a bit OCD, but I'm an incurable researcher.

Indeed with the odd exception, injury time for most 2nd halves seem to be 3 or 4 mins regardless of injuries, subs etc in that have taken place.

Just have the 4th official controlling the watch and stopping it whenever the ball is out of play. The length of game may need to be adjusted but it somewhat takes the pressure off the Ref and would annoy Westley.

Dearnevalleyrover, I did go to Donny recently but watching that Cods performance I reckon the game was about 86 minutes too long, let alone any added time. Thanks for the respones.
