Regan Slater was hooked against Exeter having looked somewhat ineffective and out of his depth. He's a teenager on loan from a bigger club so maybe he's just not ready yet to step up from academy 'fake' football. If he joins the ranks of loanees who are talked up, make a single appearance, struggle, and then disappear, returning to their parent clubs with nary an announcement then he will also become the latest casualty of a who's who of players who failed to meet expectations at Carlisle, who all wore the number 15 shirt.
The last time a number 15 distinguished himself at Carlisle was Paul Arnison. The following have worn the shirt since, and aren't simply signings that didn't work out, but players who for one reason or another are remembered as notable failures, often being talked up, given ample first-team opportunities, signed for actual money, being remembered as failures long after their departure, and/or having a decent career with their time at Carlisle being a low point for them, as well as us.
Gavin Rothery - supposed wonderkid who played two games in two seasons
Craig Curran - figurehead striker who netted only 8 times in 57 games
Mike Edwards - experienced and successful, yet became one of the worst defenders we've ever had
Courtney Meppen-Walter - started out well with the number 30 shirt, then was apparently handed a Nando's gift card along with the number 15
Shaun Brisley - a marquee signing supposedly who never put in a decent performance, contract cancelled a year later
Sam Cosgrove - sold for Aberdeen for actual money despite only making a handful of appearances in half a season, yet to do much up there.
We actually handed the shirt to a sub goalie on loan from Everton in the second half of last season. Can't remember his name, he didn't make a single appearance. I thought giving a reserve goalie the shirt though was a decent way of subverting the curse, hand it to someone who isn't expected to do anything anyway.
